The Apple Watch I bought has/d 'always on' capability. I turned it off. I don't need to deplete the batter faster because I can't wait the fractions of a second for the screen to wake up to see the watch face.

The regular iPhone 14 purely exists to keep the price of the Pro as it is. In fact, thanks to the additional regular 14 Max, the Pro will most likely become more expensive
In fairness almost everything becomes more expensive these days.

Sometimes you need to see display when in tough spot and you cannot move your wrist...

No interest in an always on display - switched it off on my watch as well.
Now, I really don’t need an always on display on my phone, but this is a pretty odd take re: the Apple Watch. I’m going to go on a limb and assume you didn’t regularly wear a watch before buying the Apple Watch? I did, and quick glances at my watch when I’d lost track of time or when I was bored were facts of life for me. If I happen to be stuck out and about after my watch has gone into bedtime mode, I’ll usually turn off bedtime mode, just so I can glance at the time without pressing a button or tapping the screen.

Was it about one week ago everyone was bemoaning how boring the iPhone 14 series was going to be?
I mean it is still pretty boring in the scheme of things. AOD is nothing new (and the 13 pro series should be able to run it too but apple won't allow it). Android has been doing AOD for years...

Unsurprised to see this. The AOD was destined to be available the day they showed the new lock screen. All the designs and typographies seems fit and optimised to be in AOD mode.

Isn't AOD a misfeature for most applications? Just like on the Apple Watch, or the old MagSafe charging cables, who wants their phone glowing all night long when you're trying to sleep? And what's the point of wasting battery on displaying things on a screen that you're not even looking at?

I have to wonder if Apple isn't implementing this because they can, rather than because it makes sense!

I'll hold out as I'm happy with my 13 Pro, but look forward to AoD and hopefully USB-C next year.
Same here. It’s nice to hear that an AoD finally will be coming to the iPhones (Pro models at least).
Total waste of money to buy a new device every year. Will hold on until iPhone 15 or even 16.
Love my 13 pro in Sierra blue :)

So perhaps someone smarter than me can explain, but I thought iPhones have been using OLED screens for a few years now. This would easily allow for AOD, and for only the pixels needed for the widgets and time to be displayed, so why does the entire screen have to be on at low brightness?, "while the screen remains at a low brightness and frame rate," wrote Gurman.

Only the iPhone 13 Pro Display allow a refresh rate of only 10hz. Not sure if there is a real reason that causes this limitation or it’s simply done like that by Apple.
To run the AoD as energy efficient as possible you need a refresh rate as low as possible.
Main argument by Apple will be that only the 14 (pro) phones allow a refresh rate of only 1hz and probably have some further features in the processor to allow an AoD.
It might be possible for older phones as well but companies using such kind of feature as a reason to buy a new phone.
Don’t get your hopes up that this will be added to 13 pro phones or even older. This won’t happen.

Yeah, I probably say this with every phone, but the 13 Pro is my favorite iPhone. Awesome cameras, awesome battery life, awesome 120Hz OLED display, awesome design, awesome performance.

I'm curious: why do you have no interest in this feature? Serious question. Because I'm of the mind that I can't wait for this and I've been clamoring for it for years, but I'm always one to weigh the merits of the other side as well...

The watch isn't a watch without the feature. Cannot fathom someone's reasoning behind turning it off. Zero benefit to turning it off. You probably still believe it drains the battery, which it does not.
