The M2 lacks the GPU advancements of the M3. Such as ray tracing, mesh shading, hardware decoding. Can’t see Apple using older M2 at all anymore. Same goes for any Mac updates.
Sticking it in the Air is typical Apple wanting you to up sell to the Pro versions to gain M3

that's not good. I was planning to get one soon.
Always take Gurman's speculation as just speculation. His Oct 22 news letter speculated differently.

That probably won’t change anytime soon, but Apple will at least update the lineup with new hardware in 2024. I’ve written that the company has been working on a slew of models, including versions of the iPad Air, entry-level iPad and iPad mini with bumped-up specifications. There’s also a revamped iPad Pro in the works. I’m told that Apple is currently planning to release at least the more minor iPad refreshes in March.

M2 is very similar to M1 to justify Air 5 to 6... I'm hoping for M3 minus of course the lack of Pro Motion and OLED. I will be happy with the LCD which is still great IPS based screen.

Is there anyone else like me, that just wants Apple to take a concept like Samsung Dex and release its own version? All current Apple SOC on iPads and iPhones are more than powerful to handle a complete OS in dock mode connected to external display.

Pro iPads = MacOS in dock+ext display mode
non pro iPhones = iPadOS in dock+ext display mode
Pro iPhones = MacOS in dock/ext display mode

I realize this would cannobolize a chunk of their Mac market, but I think it would also grow their Phone and Tablet share. And STREAMline products that will save on future R&D, manufacturing and marketing costs to offset. And knowing Apple, they could use it as an ECO marketing play by claiming a reduced carbon footprint. Evolve an all in one device to the next level like they did with an iMac when it first came out.
I would love this! And, I would take it further and hope they would allow any Mac to serve as an external display for any iPhone/ipad, similar to how you can use an iPad to extend a Mac screen now.

If you're going to point out someone for getting something wrong, then it's only fair to point out the other person (who got multiple things wrong) as well.
Every time someone dares tell the truth on how wrong Mark Gurman is, and when he is right it is because several people are saying something Apple related and he jumps on the train, they get booed in here.

I do not understand this fascination with Gurman. I don’t think he has any specific inside knowledge, and he is never first to suggest anything. What he is good at is playing the odds.

I believe Apple will come out with an updated Mac Studio, a new iPhone, a few new iPads, and probably a new Apple Watch this year. There you have it. Of course if I get it wrong, I’ll say that’s because they were a bit behind plan and it will come out next year.

Why not just use it until it needs replacing :)

... there is nothing wrong with using lightning until you progress onto a new device (in the event no port change had occurred).
Because I would rather trade in my current one while it has an okay trade-in value. And not needing to travel with both Lightning and USB-C cables would be great.

Which is why they won't even think about it, let alone do it

They aren't worrying about what's best for customers anymore ... not if it's going to even hint at threatening existing revenue streams.

This isn't a product company first anymore....it's a financial operation above everything else

Once they had a credit card -- all doubt was removed

Apple have always been about money, always... and they likely always will be. No matter what anyone says, or does, or thinks

If they put other things ahead of money, they would be a charity. Like raspberry Pi and others.

The only reason they exist, the sole reason.. is to make money, period.. and their product happens to be computers and related products and services.

Yes, they have a following, a very loyal customer base that are a small percentage of all their customers. But this is very odd, its not really normal and most companies would do anything for a cult following.. and they know it pays to keep that following... because it makes even more money.

Maybe they can bring him back for some presentations with deep fake and AI tech

The problem is, it'd be an all-new Steve Jobs but Apple would just call it "Steve Jobs" and so if someone was referring to "Steve Jobs," you'd never know if they were talking about an earlier version of Steve Jobs or the new version of Steve Jobs. So you'd end up having to look up which model number Steve Jobs it was and that'd just be such a pain in the ass.

At least the new Steve Jobs would be the best Steve Jobs they've ever made. I think we're all going to love him.

It's both shocking and depressing to me that the whole "Pro" naming thing actually works on consumers so well.

Are people really this easily fooled?
It sure seems like it.

I thought folks were smarter than this in general -- I guess not.
Aww. It’s adorable when the light bulb comes on…

Would anyone else find it useful if iPad Pro had a Mac OS option to be more of a “pro” device. I guess I just don’t see why they use then pro terminology since it really does everything else every other iPad does. Or am I missing something?
I think you are missing something!

one could argue that it is part of Apple’s sale strategy, and therefore not a waste of time for them.

You're absolutely correct, I'm sure it is part of their overall sales push. But then I think... Who is the person who gets needlessly motivated to buy some consumer electronics bauble by one of those dog and pony shows? I get that not every purchase is purely about quantitative need, but... Come on now. Those presentations are stupid little circus acts. Infomercials with a better budget.

Yeah, I’d be fine with a non-OLED for an iPad Air 6.
I’m looking at the larger 12.9 size, so it would be prohibitively expensive with an OLED screen.

However, my guess is the Air will be M2. Apple is the king of using up their parts bin. A nominal speed bump, new camera position, and the introduction of the larger size is enough to justify a new iPad Air.

And plus, it’s a given the iPad Pro will get the M3 chips.

You thought people were smarter than that? Are you serious? They evidence they are not has been prolific for quite a long time.

It’s amazing

There is one iPad that people complain about the hardware on, and it’s the one not getting an update still after nearly 3 years

I would believe this, EXCEPT it comes from Gurman, who is entirely full of ****. He doesn’t know anything, he guesses a lot, and like they say “Even a blind hen finds a kernel of grain occasionally.”

Why MacRumors keep giving this guy any credit is beyond me.
Gurman does not write his newsletters for tech blog readers. He has a significant following in the investment community and for the most part could not care less what we think of him. None of us are his clients.

I laugh when people rip into Gurman or any of the other prominent analyst / investment newsletter guys. The people that matter in his business don't feel like you do. The guy does his job or he wouldn't have one. His business is sink or swim. There is no in-between. He is in the securities business, not the tech business.

I'd agree when it comes to most people at Apple, especially Tim Apple's speeches, they've always been horrible and ultra-boring.
However, nothing beats a live presentation by Craig Federighi, he's the coolest of the bunch, always a joy to watch him! He has the perfect balance between humour/comedy and sincerity for the new tech.

Not enjoying the pre-recorded presentations by the ever-changing random Apple employees, where it's all about diversity while a natural talent for presentation seems to not matter at all.
Federighi is funny and cool?

Interesting that you think so. My brother works for an investment firm in England, and they give absolutely NO credence to what Gurman says. They listen to analysts we don’t even know about “in the wild.”

Gurman is not an analyst/investor guy. He's simply a technology journalist for Bloomberg. see https://markgurman.com/

He sits at the top of the Techmeme Leaderboard and is known as one of the very best technology reporters in the world. He frequently appears on TV and radio for Bloomberg News.

If it’s professional analysis about Apple you want, I struggle to imagine why anybody would opt to follow anyone else other than Neil Cybart of AboveAvalon.

No disagreement. I merely tried to point out that Gurman could care less what tech blog readers think of his work and that the constant complaining every time his name appears is tiresome and like an endless loop.
