I hate that Apple is stingy with storage, today, devices that are not upgradable. All portable devices should have at least 256GB and pro models should start with 512GB. We are still going to buy the latest and greatest for the new hardware features. This will keep people on older devices, and Apple will still profit with the monthly services they offer. They are still going to make money, they will give users a better experience with their products.

Hoping for an update to the entry iPad so I can replace my last device that has Lightning.
Why not just use it until it needs replacing :)

... there is nothing wrong with using lightning until you progress onto a new device (in the event no port change had occurred).

I sure hope they now can finally allocate way more resources to working on things the masses actually care about.

iPads, iPhones, Macs, AirPods ... and software quality across the board.

Enough with wasting time and money on the Scuba Mask and the ridiculous "car" BS
I wonder how much those two boondoggles alone have cost us in terms of other possible progress we aren't seeing.

You’re not missing anything. “Pro“ is a marketing term (they could have just called it “iPad Deluxe“) that has nothing to do with the product, but everything to do with the buyer.

It's both shocking and depressing to me that the whole "Pro" naming thing actually works on consumers so well.

Are people really this easily fooled?
It sure seems like it.

I thought folks were smarter than this in general -- I guess not.

They have always, always, been like this with RAM and HDD storage. But a plateau also happened on the PC consumer side too.

But operating systems are way more optimised than they used to be... and even on 8 GB RAM I can push my MacBook Air M2 pretty hard without any issue. And the same goes for iOS devices... which are actually amazing at memory management and App freezing etc.

If you're a Pro you know what you need and you will spec accordingly.. and I guess, if you're a Pro, that those expensive upgrades would be worth it in the long run...

I think Apple is thinking, making products with a higher price margin like scuba mask or driverless car, will bring in more money with less, but in reality iPhones, iPads, AirPods and Macs pay the bills.

It's absurd it has taken this long to just lightly spec bump the iPad Mini

It would fly off the shelves if folks no longer had reservations about the screen (and if they stop the price hiking trend)

You too can use that Steve Jobs Theater, for the low starting price of $3499 or $291.58/mo. per month for 12 mo.
You're right, but they don't have that great pitch man, Steve Jobs to sell it. They have a bunch of people that can read the specs.

I seem to be in the minority when reading the other comments, but I would have preferred an event. Not because it's necessary, but because I like it. :) I like the build up to the event when the first invitations go out, the livestream and live blogs during the event, the hands-on videos afterwards, etc.

iPads haven't been updated since 2022, so some love for them from Apple would have been nice, haha.
I myself like the events because they give you a hard date on when to pay attention about a product you're interested in. I'd hate to come here & read Apple announced the new iPads & pre orders started, the day after. All because Apple dropped the info on their website ( that I rarely go to, unless to order something ) and I missed because I don't obsessively follow all things Apple. For me the events meant that on this date xx/xx I should be paying attention.

The good news is that none of these things are in demand that outstrip their capacity, so you'll still be able to get one in short order even if you missed the announcements a little bit.

But Samsung DeX is not a completely different OS, still based on Android... but with a different UI.

Well, it wouldn't cannibalize their Mac market... but it would certainly take a hit. And Apple is all about profit... why consolidate their Mac and iPad into one product, when they can sell you on both.
iOS and iPadOS are also based on MacOS. I get Apple, like all companies, are about profit, but they could come up with more halo products to cater to this new feature (ie docks, more monitor options, etc..). Heck, they could justify charging a bit more for phones/iPads if they doubled as a dockable desktop to gain that profit back. Also, the stolen market share from Android and Windows would offset any profit hit. Laptops and desktops have been stagnant to in decline for many years now throughout the entire industry. Instead of trying to come up with foldables to reinvent the form factors, or VR headsets, make the iPhone and iPad the all in one computing solution that your SoC allows you to and can differentiate itself from everyone else.

It isn't the worry of missing one. It's the thing we always see. After an hour or two the ship date starts slipping weeks. Which means I have to do what I often do & pre order the highest base model that stores carry, to get it release date. I'd like to avoid that & have the luxury of getting delivered to me on release day.

My hope was for a hybrid that could run both IOS and MacOS. That ain’t in the cards, apparently.

I would believe this, EXCEPT it comes from Gurman, who is entirely full of ****. He doesn’t know anything, he guesses a lot, and like they say “Even a blind hen finds a kernel of grain occasionally.”

Why MacRumors keep giving this guy any credit is beyond me.
They probably see that stories around Gurman get engagement, even from folks that don’t care for him. In the end, they exist because they make money, soo…

I’m not knocking you… any tech enthusiast would want something like that.

But business-wise… it wouldn’t make much sense for Apple, regardless charging a bit more. They would rather iterate on their current product lines... milking as much profit they can, until it’s undeniable that changes need to be made (playing it safe).

Last year, the iPad didn’t see any updates… thus revenue was down. I suspect we will see an increase in revenue this year with the changes they are planning on making.
