Well, we’re fresh out of straws because you’re obviously clutching them all. It’s been…entertaining, cheers!
If you didn't want me to search Amazon, next time don't tell me to search Amazon.

Weird how people suddenly don't like their own argument when it's used against them.

The software needs to be more "Mac alike", just a keyboard more "Mac alike" isn't enough.

On my case, I am probably drop my current setup (iPad Pro 2018 and iPhone 13 mini) for a Iphone pro max.

Make my MacBook reductant and I'll buy an Ipad instead.

Apple again lingering on unnecessary things without doing the main thing to do (Macos on iPad :D)

I owned the 2018 12.9” iPP w/ Magic Keyboard….The Magic Keyboard for the iPad is exactly why I bought the 13” M2 MBA and sold the iPP. That’s because my preferred mode of use turned out to be docked to the Magic Keyboard instead of as a tablet. The MBA is a better clamshell computer in every sense (except speaker sound).

Some people here are saying the Magic Keyboard helps sell iPads and that might be true, but I also believe after Apple has taken your money and you use it for some time…you begin to realize you should have just bought a secondary portable laptop.

The M3 will make this a great upgrade. The M3 will make all of Apple's devices great upgrades.

think i will stick with my ipad pro 12.9 in a smart cover and keep using my mac as intended. i can imagine the new keyboard will be more.

I am still miffed that Apple, by placing the connectors differently, made the Smart Keyboard Folio not work with other iPads... and I anticipate them doing the same with a next iPad Pro, so people won't be able to use older keyboards.

I would be surprised if there isn't an engineer who has tried to voice their opinion on this dual boot feature (for the iPad) in that highly fortified bubble that is the UFO campus...
It's all about money. They don't want to cannibalize their other product lines.

Currently there are many customers having iPhone, Macbook and they buy iPad (just) to complete the ecosystem. Even if it fits only very narrow use-case.

If they would add full macOS abilities to the iPad, many customers would totally skip Macbook lineup, because having iPad with keyboard and possibility to connect external screen and keyboard/mouse would be totally enough for many customers.

Better example is probably documents. They’re often portrait oriented, so it’s naturally easier to keep them in portrait while typing/working on them.

I don't generally work with documents on the iPad, but you're totally right.

Good thing it detaches :D

The keyboard I use (Not the Magic Keyboard because IMHO that's massively overpriced) pops off and reverses to clip onto the back of the tablet so you can use it in portrait.

It does detach, but it requires two hands to remove as the magnetic connection is quite strong.

Like I said it in the original post, I have very mixed emotions about the Magic Keyboard.

Lenovo Tab Extreme manages to pull this off. You get less coverage on the back. Seems to be the only way this can work
Yeah, it's going to take real redesign to allow for a fn row, a larger trackpad, or both. That Lenovo covers the entire front so less coverage in the back was a design decision, possibly related to its portrait swivel. It doesn't lookalike it has a larger trackpad but I think it accommodates the Fn row because the hinge shape is rectangular instead of a circle. Its also possible that its keys are smaller.

Assuming it is using the same cantilever design, I’m not sure how Apple could add a Fn row or a larger trackpad without decreasing the size of the rest of the keys. I pretended there was a Fn row on my existing 13” MK, and my finger keep hitting the bottom of the iPad.
Seems like they would have to abandon the cantilever design (which would also allow room for a function row). I just hope it's still as easy to pop on and off which I do multiple times every day. I wouldn't be surprised if it's connected via USB-C connection on the long end which would certainly be more awkward.

I also love my Mac for everything it does well. It would be harder to convince me of adding touch to the Mac where I feel like the only benefit it would provide is an occasional interfacing for scrolling or maybe pinching to zoom.
Let’s not forget you can already pinch-to-zoom using the multi-touch trackpad.

It is not.

Glad I’m a heretic who ignores the 11th Commandment ”Thou shalt use iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard” and often carries the 12.9 in just the Smart Folio case (total weight: 1.95lbs) or the acceptably functional Smart Keyboard Folio (total weight: 2.35lbs).

But then, I don’t think of my iPad Pro as a MacBook replacement, but rather a substitute for when I’m out-and-about or traveling.

It does seem like with OLED it will finally be time to replace my 11" 2018 iPad Pro, one of the best Apple products ever made.

I agree 100 %. I still have my 11” iPad Pro 2018 at home and it works so well, it looks pristine, the weight and size are right and it does everything a tablet should do. I have the 12.9” M1 iPad too because I use it for work, but other than the larger screen (useful for me) I see not many advantages in the new device compared to the 2018 one.
