I’m all for an all software WWDC that focuses on refining all the platforms.

macOS: Stability. High Sierra is a mess. New Mac App Store.
iOS: Siri. Siri. Siri.
tvOS: TV app refinement. It’s got a lot of potential, and they’ve almost got it right. Better platform for game developers.
HomePod: See iOS above. SiriKit domain additions to allow third parties into HomePod. Siri. Oh, and Siri.
watchOS: Refine the concept of Complications. Richer Complications is all most 3rd party apps need to be.

Apple can update Mac chips in a press release after the event. It doesn’t need to take up stage time. Update iPad Pros and introduce all new MacBookPros in September at the iPhone event which has increasingly become a hardware event, not just iPhone.

"Apple could reveal its reported plans to allow iOS apps to run on Macs as early as this year. The wording suggests it's not entirely clear if Apple plans to discuss the project at WWDC or later."

Why do people continue to talk about this even though Cook recently went on record to say that this will never happen?

Probably because Tim Cook lies continuously with regard to Apple’s plans and products, the guy is worse than a politician...
But all this seems to be par for the course in the CEO-tech milieux

So you want the company accused of withholding new products, slow to update and poor communication with customers to slow down their release cycles? I bet that wouldn't go over very well.

All of Apple's products are already on a two year cycle, if you consider the cycle to be: Announce -> Delay Delivery -> Deliver -> Bug Fix Delays -> Working Correctly. All I am asking for is for Apple to admit it.

In the Jobs days it was Deliver -> Mostly Minor Bug Fixes -> Working Correctly.

I don't see any benefit with the current mode of announcing products that are not ready just to grab the keynote headlines or to create a bunch of interviews for incredible products that can't be delivered.

What more does a 2018 MacBook Pro and iPad Pro will offer that a 2017 version isn't already offering? I know, you can't show off on your Twitter feed or Facebook Live you have the latest Apple gear.

These products are tools and the fact that you have users with models 5 or more years old and getting the job done, is testament to the fact that you don't need to have the latest and greatest from Apple. If Apple doesn't announce new revs on Monday, get whats currently available and actually 'use it'.
The difference is that they’re not just spec bumps and even if they were, a core increase for MacBooks is a significant change to ensure their tool will be better at working for 5 years+.

Because he never said that.

This is what I was expecting to begin with. Apple seems like they vastly prefer fall releases for new Mac/iPad hardware in recent years. Last year was not unheard of but was a little early for a release based on recent trends.

I personally I am fine with the timeline. As long as Macbook Pros come out at some point this year (even if it is Dec 31st 2018) with redesigned reliable keyboards I will be happy.

It does if Apple is reworking any of the MacBook Pros innards, addressing the keyboard issues or is still waiting on discrete AMD Vega mobile GPUs - then prudence would say to wait on any announcement.

Intel's new Coffee Lake 45w H-Series (six-core versions) CPUs were just introduced on April 3rd of this year. The 5w Y-series (MacBook) has yet to be announced and above all, Intel staggered the roll out of its Coffee Lake (8th Gen, if you will) over a period of 9 months, which is a long time in the microprocessor world. Without announcing the 8th Gen Y-Series, they are, technically, still not done with the roll out.
Yes, those are quite good reasons for them to wait ;) I just hope it won't take too long!

There is no doubt in my mind that Apple would use Intel's introduction of their 4-core U-Series and 6-core H-Series to their advantage to rework the MacBook Pro making it slightly thicker to accommodate better cooling, a larger tiered battery, a better shielded keyboard with a revised butterfly- or even a modified scissors-based mechanism and turn the trials and tribulations of the 2016/2017 MacBook Pros into a marketing triumph. I can hear almost hear Schiller now, "In order to make the new MacBook Pro the ultimate, no compromise notebook computer, we went back to our groundbreaking 2016 MacBook Pro and re-examined everything!"

This might also be the opportunity for Apple to release a NON-touchBar version of the 15" MacBook Pro, by using the Intel G-Series CPUs (4-core i7 w/ Vega Graphics built-in) and further segment the market, which is what we have seen Apple do with both the iPhone (SE, 6s, 7, 8 and X) and the iPad (mini, iPad, iPad Pro). Doing this would allow Apple to address criticisms of the current-generation 13" and 15" MacBook Pros and turn it into a marketing win for themselves.

And if Apple does have a larger 13" MacBook waiting in the wings, then they are going to want to hold an event to showcase this new computer along with the revised MacBook Pros.
I'm not sure where you got those ideas but I doubt a few of them.

I don't see Apple "going back" to anything, it's really not their style. They'll figure out a way to make the keyboards more reliable and wait for those who don't like the key travel to get used to it.

I also don't see Apple releasing any more non-TB versions of the MBP. Also not their style and not a good strategy if they want developer to work on that technology.

A 13" MacBook is more likely IMO.
I would not be surprised if the iMacs get 8th Gen CPU updates on Monday, if nothing else.

One last thing, Apple has two optimal timeframes for releasing hardware updates, three if you count March. These are May, June, July (the Back To School season) and September, October, November (the Holiday Shopping Season).
I'd be so happy if they did! My 2011 MBP and only work computer lost its dGPU a few weeks ago so I can't use my external monitor anymore. I'm so tired of working on that small screen that I'm almost dreaming of that 27" 5k display these days :D

Gurman claims Apple is working on refreshed MacBook, MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Watch models, and a new low-cost MacBook, but he doesn't expect any of those devices to be ready until "later this year."

Well Apple, if this is right, don't expect any of my money until "later this year", or maybe never.

I cannot imagine they expect you to buy any of their products until they actually release them.

A computer with proper cooling and a GPU that isn't a complete pile of junk (that still thermal throttles)?

They apperantly expect me to buy a kaby lake mac mini ... bizarre...

I’m finding it absolutely astounding how many people don’t understand that this is a developer conference about software, and that the conference itself is several days rather than the streaming keynote that comprises like 1% of the actual event.
We get that it’s a developers conference and that it’s not just a one day event BUT last year they announced the HomePod, the iMac Pro and updated the internals for iMacs so that’s got a lot of us very excited for potential hardware announcements

Intel has released all the necessary CPUs. Well, I'll stay optimistic 'till Monday. If they will not update the MBPs, I'll start looking for some temporary machine. :(
Not for the 12” MacBook or 13” TB MacBook Pro. Conceivably the 13” NTB could get a quad-core but the 13” TB doesn’t have a comparable chip with Iris graphics.

So basically, the worst keynote of all time? Why does Apple even do keynotes anymore???

Because it's a conference for developers? Lol if you're expecting lots of hardware wait on September or wait WWDC for announcements.

I personally would not be surprised if no new hardware, apple is a monopoly they can still sell 4 year old hardware at yesterdays price !!

Do yourselves a favour and switch, enjoy the latest hardware in both cpu and cpu's. Build a hackintosh or run with software emulation via VMware.

Not even considering the legal and ethical implications, I'd never trade the stability of a Mac just to have the latest CPUs a few months earlier.

"Gurman: WWDC 2018 to Have Software Focus"

Get outta town, really? Where do these journalists source this stuff? Wizardry.

Yeah, you've got to laugh. It's a *developer* conference folks - so it's going to be almost entirely software focussed, with perhaps some hardware for *developing on* and maybe a few hints of what's to come on the hardware front by reading between the lines (of code).

Why would the MBPs be delayed? Apple wants to lose marketshare? I have no other explanation if that happens.
They were they’re working to update the keyboard.

No, but it is ridiculous to spend 30 or 40% more for a older generation Mac over a current HP or Dell. If Apple lowered the prices on their current line, then at least it would make more sense.

Have fun with the HP! Despite all the criticism and complaints on MR, this has been a product that really has advanced our smart home and something we all are enjoying using. We have two, and will hopefully, gradually add more with the AirPlay 2 and stereo capabilities. Even Siri has worked well on the HP.;)

We’re getting two from the very beginning, so I’m looking forward to first test them with stereo pairing disabled and will enable it afterwards. This should elevate the well received sound signature even further. But I strongly assume you made this experience already.

Like I said apple is a 'MONOPOLY' with billions in cash, they don't have to be on the cutting edge and therefore they can sell old hardware to you and make you beg for 10% more speed..its unfortunate that iPhone gave them great success otherwise they would be a different company. To be hones I looked at my pattern of work and windows is fine, works blazingly fast for 1/4 of the price. If you buy a branded pc you will be fine. Most apps now crossing over even in UX design to windows. You can take that money and go on vacation don't drive yourself crazy for new stuff.
