The 6.1, with it's single camera, looks like a bad deal in comparison to the iPhoneX.
Aluminium frame instead of SS? No thanks.
The 2018 iPhone better have something special otherwise the iPhoneX will continue to be their best seller (time for a price drop?)
The notch on those dummy models looks like it has 2 new front facing cameras. No mention of them in the video?
I went from iPhone 6Plus to iPhone X and I wouldn't go back to that larger screen size.
It's just too cumbersome.
It's hand bag ballast. I remember reading a psychology report that suggested women prefer larger screens to men.
depends a lot on the price difference. if the entry-level phone is $600-700 and the updated X is $900+ i could see people buying the entry-level phone since the primary feature it would be missing is portrait mode. I doubt they'll continue to stock the X after this update, probably just the 8 and 8 plus.

I’m not sure what new features these new phone will have but the current ones are just fine for me. I doubt there is anything worth upgrading for this time around or in the near future. I think the form factor has reached it’s plateau.
The Apple Watch and the IPad Pro is where future innovation will be felt most. I will certainly upgrade my series 3 and 12.9 iPad Pro as those are where improvements are used the most.

I feel Apple is disconnected. I don't know why you have to get the larger screen to enjoy all the extras. If there was two phones with one at 5.8 inches and another at 6.5 inches with the same features and same price, I would pick the smaller phone. Apple would still receive their revenue and I would get the phone I wanted.
Sadly, they are not disconnected. They deliberately did that to make Apple user pay them more and make a profit.

I just hope Apple doesn't go back to reserving a new feature for the larger, plus-sized flagship model. The iPhone X is already bigger than I'd like it to be so there's no way I'm going to a 6.5" phone even if there's a new shiny feature on it.

If anything, I'd love to see a 5" version that has all the new features as the largest flagship.
I believe said phone will come in the fall of 2019.

I wonder which day the September event will be.
September 10 or 12.

I truly hope for something groundbreaking this time around. Anything different. I just can't get on the bandwagon for something "new" only to to be told that speed was increased by a fraction of what we have already, the screen size is bigger, and there are new Emoji's. It's not enough. I would almost rather them take a backseat to the iPhone for a minute and focus on some other tech or wearable devices. I mean, common', The Apple Contact Lens? I would be in a tent tomorrow in line for that. The hype of new is lost on me.

I don’t care about iPhone dummies, this year there is no radical design change.

I want to see the new MacBook Air dummy please. Get someone on to it.

Rumor mill says all three models will have 4GB.

Looking forward to getting the larger iPhone X (8 Plus user at the moment).

Credible rumors have always indicated 3GB of RAM.

Given what we know so far, the dummy models and possibility of lower prices, 2018 iPhone lineup looks like a gangbuster.

Still, I wonder whether Apple is taking risk by offering only a single "standard price" iPhone model that measures closer to iPhone 8 Plus than iPhone 8.

To be fair, 6.1" iPhone is significantly smaller than iPhone 8 Plus. But it is still closer in size to iPhone 8 Plus than iPhone 8.

A12 + 3GB

Much of the difference in price comes from the LCD, single-lens camera, and aluminum mid-frame.

Do you think just a small camera improvement and lcd will justify two hundred dollars more? Knowing Apple, it'll most likely be shipped with last year's processor, otherwise it would cannibalize the sales of the more expensive models.

Remember when Apple sold a Mac gadget for every conceivable niche? It culminated in the mid-'90s with the Performas, then Centris, WGS, clones, and other assorted freak-show entries like the Newton, eMate, and Pippin. Why does it seem history is repeating?

We don't yet know the price of iPhone 9, but it is widely rumored to replace iPhone 8, which begins at $699. iPhone 8 has a single camera and aluminum frame.

Also, 6.1" iPhone isn't dramatically larger than iPhone X.
  • 4.7" iPhone measures: 138.4 mm by 67.3 mm by 7.3 mm
  • 5.5" iPhone Plus measures: 158.4 mm by 78.1 mm by 7.5 mm
  • 5.8" iPhone X measures: 143.6 mm by 70.9 mm by 7.7 mm
  • 6.1" iPhone measures: 150.9 mm by 75.7 mm by 8.3 mm
  • 6.5" iPhone X Plus measures: 157.5 mm by 77.4 mm by 7.7 mm
So if 6.1" iPhone does indeed start at $699, I think it will sell like a hotcake.

The dual-lens is more than just a feature, it visually distinguishes a premium phone.

The lack of 3D Touch hardware on the 6.1" is another separating feature.

With 7nm litho from TSMC, it's likely A12 has a smaller die size compared to A11. Similar to the way A11 is smaller than A10. In terms of cost, A12 makes sense on 6.1".

It amazes me that people still don't get what Apple sell. What they don't sell is "bargains".
The iPhoneX should have proven that. "Too expensive" everyone said and yet...

If they want a "new" phone, with dual cameras, at a bargain price then they'll probably buy a 2nd hand, or discounted, iPhoneX.
My point is that the 6.1 might struggle with competition from the iPhone X.
Time, with pricing and features, will tell.

... I just come here for the gossip and laugh at folks wishing for a new iPhone SE ...

Curious why? The SE is my preferred form factor. Just the right size, easier to hold. Stands up on its side, when needed. It's a great design. Are you laughing because you think it's a pipe dream that Apple will come out with a spec-bumped version?

... I'm still waiting on a new Mac Mini so laugh all you want at me. I also still have an iPhone 6S Plus because I'm tired of the same phone factor that has been released after. Give me a foldable phone or something radically different than these slim soap bar designs!

Now that I can agree with. I am not a huge fan of the iPhone 6/7/8 design with the rounded edges. May seems minor, but I just don't like it, and I know because my gf had the iPhone 6s and now has the 7, so I handle it every day. She prefers my SE for games, too, believe it or not. Can't make this stuff up. I just wish developers wouldn't relegate the smaller screen size to being "not important" to design for.

It sounds so strange for a ‘Hands on’ with dummy iPhones. I understand the aesthetics side of things, it just seems awkward. In a few weeks, we should have a ‘real’ hands on with both models.

I just hope the LCD model gets a RAM upgrade as iOS 11 is awful on the 8... not much better on the 8 Plus nor X but the extra RAM did make a difference.

iOS 11 runs great on my SE. Zero slowness. Curious what could be causing it to be dramatically slower on phones that are way faster. Got an example, or two?

Why are the bezels thicker on the 6.1" when the essential phone uses an LCD screen with slimmer bezels than the OLED X? The article implies the thicker bezels will be due to the use of an LCD display.

Updated X? I missed that. Are we expecting a newer X model?
So 9, 9Plus and XI ?
Can Apple really bring out a "9" given last year's flag ship was a "10"?

I'd be disappointed if getting the best camera's was limited to the largest form factor given the X had top end cameras last year.
I think there needs to be a top spec compact iPhone and not just limited to the model with the largest screen.
This pending product announcement is going to be fascinating.

Yes, women do prefer larger "screens". No psychology report needed for that.
Anyway...
I prefer the larger screen because my phone is also a portable TV/cinema. I'm on the go constantly and have a fair bit of downtime between jobs. Having a larger screen but the same psychical dimensions (basically) as a PLUS phone... COUNT ME IN!!!

I don't care if it has nothing else new. The screen and a better camera is all I care about on top of the regular phone functions.

I'm pretty peeved that the 6.1' doesn't have the dual-camera and therefore, no portrait mode. I completely understand why they did it but it's pretty frustrating that there's not even a software equivalent for the single lens camera like Google has for the Pixel. That's likely the iPhone I'll end up with if I upgrade, although the iOS 12 beta has really increased the speed of my 6s Plus and it's perfectly suitable as a daily driver still.
