Am I reading this right that Apple might be doing a replacement oled phone for $800 instead of the current $1000?
Hmmm...wonder what sparked that.

“This year is no exception”?

This year is a HUGE exception. We should’ve already had parts leak by now. Parts of the iPhone X leaked in June 2017. I think Apple really cracked down.

Haven’t seen a logic board, display, battery etc.

Just “dummy units” and info from certain sources.

The iPhone X isn’t Apple’s “best seller”. It is the most expensive iPhone in history. In the EU it costs €1150. ONE THOUSAND EUROS for a smartphone that will start feeling slow in 2.5 years. I rarely see people here with an iPhone X. Why? Because it is bloody expensive.

So no, the 6.1 isn’t a “bad deal”. In fact it IS the best deal. This is why Apple is making it. They came to the hard realization that may be making an iPhone that costs a thousand euros isn’t the best of ideas. Also, Most people (including me) put their fragile iPhones in cases. A frame made out of steel or aluminum won’t matter to 99% of the people.

I suppose it's envy/rage/disappointment at not being able to afford a top end smart phone. Poor you.
Do yourself a favour and pull up google.com, pop "iphone x best selling" into the little old search box and see what you get.
Oh and $1Trillion was not achieved through selling low end, or even medium range smart phones...

Ironically, this is the first year I am not interested nor excited in the new iPhones. I am more happy with the iPhone X than I was with previous generations of iPhones. I’ll be holding onto the iPhone X for at least another year.

This year’s new Apple Watch tho.

I returned the X and settled on the 8.

This year I’ll be interested in the new Watch as long as it’s not round, along with a lighter X at same screen size 5.8”.

Smaller phones please.
Most of the time the phone is not in use , it is carried, so smaller is better.

So people have forgotten the headphone jack? I still am on ios 9 with my 6s plus and love the headphone jack switch between the iphone and the laptop at work. Can't be more convenient. I may update my phone to ios12 when carplay and google maps come in but am tempted to switch phones. The fundamental question remains the same.

What more am I getting? A Bigger Screen and what? loosing out the headphone jack. I guess until Apple stops ios upgrades on the 6s plus I may stay with it.

Before every new iPhone release, we're often inundated with rumors, part leaks, mockups, and dummy models, giving us a clear picture of what to expect when the new devices come out.

This year is no exception, and we've managed to get our hands on dummy models that are said to resemble the rumored 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch iPhones that are coming in 2018, both of which offer up a look at the sizes and designs we can expect from the 2018 iPhone lineup.

Apple's 2018 iPhone lineup, like the 2017 lineup, will include three phones, but the lineup's composition is unlike anything we've seen before. Apple is planning to introduce a 5.8-inch OLED iPhone that's a follow up to the iPhone X, a 6.5-inch OLED iPhone that can be thought of as an "iPhone X Plus," and a 6.1-inch LCD iPhone that's going to have a much lower price tag than the two OLED iPhones.

We don't have a dummy model of the 5.8-inch OLED iPhone to go along with dummy models of the upcoming 6.1 and 6.5-inch iPhones, because it's going to look identical to the existing iPhone X, so we've used a real iPhone X to compare to the two dummy models.

All three of the 2018 iPhones feature an edge-to-edge display that adopts Face ID and a TrueDepth camera system, marking the official end of Touch ID for new iPhones. To house the TrueDepth camera, there will be a notch on all three iPhones, just as there was on the iPhone X.

The middle-tier 6.1-inch iPhone uses an LCD display instead of an OLED display to keep costs down, which means that the bezels of that device are slightly thicker than the bezels of the 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch iPhones. The 6.1-inch iPhone dummy also features a single-lens camera, in line with rumors that Apple will stick with a single camera for cost purposes.

A dual-camera setup is expected for both the second-generation 5.8-inch iPhone X model and the 6.5-inch "iPhone X Plus" model, and we can perhaps expect some camera improvements, as Apple typically introduces new camera features with each iPhone upgrade.

Rumors have also suggested the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will have an aluminum frame rather than the more durable stainless steel frame expected in the two more expensive devices, but other than the frame, the camera, the slightly thicker bezels, and the screen sizes, these devices are expected to be nearly identical.

All will include Apple's next-generation A12 processor, according to rumors, along with faster Intel-made LTE chips. RAM could be a differentiating factor, though, with the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone offering 3GB RAM and the OLED iPhones offering 4GB RAM.

We have absolutely no idea what Apple is planning to name its next-generation iPhones given the current iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X naming scheme. Most of the possibilities sound a little off, such as "iPhone Xs" or "iPhone X Plus" or "iPhone 9" or "iPhone XI." The naming of the 2018 iPhone lineup is perhaps the biggest mystery, given the myriad rumors and part leaks we've seen so far.

Pricing for the 2018 iPhones could start somewhere right around $600 to $700 for the entry-level 6.1-inch LCD model, based on rumors, while the 5.8-inch OLED iPhone could cost between $800 and $900, and the 6.5-inch OLED iPhone could cost between $1,000 and $1,100.

Wonder how Apple is considering the long term results of forcing users to buy phablet sized phones? I will certainly be cursing Apple every time I have to pull this huge brick from my pocket to use Maps, or respond to a text message with just one hand. I want the new features, just not the size cause it's just too big.

They are teaching us ALL to get used to phablet sized phones. With this lineup, the choice is gone.

Want small phones? Don't care. Pay me!

I hate that I am on an upgrade cycle and have to choose between new tech or something that fits. Either way, I lose.

Considering I hold onto the phone for multiple years, seems like I'll be cursing at apple for years... don't care. Pay me!

A12 + 3GB

Much of the difference in price comes from the LCD, single-lens camera, and aluminum mid-frame.

I usually have a case on mine so aluminium is fine, Apple LCDs are great so no issue there. Only downer is the single camera. But as much as I like the dual lens on the iphone X, I don't use it a great deal. If I'm going somewhere I might want to take nice photos, I take my nice camera. So I could probably live with the single lens. I'd miss 2x though.

Would it be slightly lighter using an aluminium frame? iphone X is pretty heavy.
[doublepost=1534319061][/doublepost]also - for a 'hands on' it would be nice to hear some impressions rather than literally just 'our hands are on it'. How do the different models feel in the hand, compare to iphone 8/8+. How wide do they feel and are they 'one handable' - that kind of thing.

Yes Apple, please making the phones bigger and bigger each year so one day I can start using my phone as a television!

Just compare the iPhone X with the iPhone 8. The X isn't much bigger, but has a much bigger screen.

Some people already do that. Some people have been doing that since first iPhone. Media consumption. Phones are not exclusively used to call and text anymore. The area of tiny screen mobile phones is over. At least for now.

The x is a bit bigger so I would expect the same for the x+
Correct, but the 6.1" iPhone will very likely be at or below the 5.5" iPhone 6/7/8 Plus size.

Except that for the first six months or so, the iPhone X was Apple's best selling model every single week (before the 8 and before the 8 Plus).

For some people.

Enjoyment and 'burden' of smartphones is not a linear scale based on time. Enjoyment per time unit when in use can far outstrip the 'burden' per time unit while it is in your pocket. According to your simple logic ("so smaller is better"), there is no lower limit to the size of a smartphone, smaller would always be better.

depends a lot on the price difference. if the entry-level phone is $600-700 and the updated X is $900+ i could see people buying the entry-level phone since the primary feature it would be missing is portrait mode. I doubt they'll continue to stock the X after this update, probably just the 8 and 8 plus.

camera is not a big deal for me & i would also buy the entry-level phone.. as long as i can call, surf the web, play app games, some applications, text... thats it

Honestly, the 6.1" iPhone just sounds like a garbage product if it lacks 3D Touch. Perhaps it'll be priced accordingly, but knowing Apple not nearly low enough.

A shame because it does look to be the "Goldilocks" size for me also.

So there’s no genuine replacement for an iphone8? If you like the size of standard 8 which way do you go now? A 2nd gen X that will cost more? The 6.1 but it’s bigger and you lose 3D Touch?

If you like the 8 Plus, is the X plus the answer to maintain dual camera and 3D Touch, but you pay through the nose?
Though the 'OLED' premium will be smaller this year for Plus users as the price delta between the 8 and the X is/was larger than the price delta between the Plus and the X Plus.

There also was no genuine replacement for the iPhone 5s (iPhone 6 had the same price but was significantly larger). Eventually the SE came out, but only 18 months after the release of the iPhone 6. Something similar is happening with the 6.1" iPhone. It's rumoured to have the same price as the iPhone 8 but is noticeably larger.

To me the iPhone X is close to the 'Goldilocks' size (but then again the iPhone 6 was as well, and before that the iPhone 5).

The dual-lens is more than just a feature, it visually distinguishes a premium phone.

The lack of 3D Touch hardware on the 6.1" is another separating feature.

With 7nm litho from TSMC, it's likely A12 has a smaller die size compared to A11. Similar to the way A11 is smaller than A10. In terms of cost, A12 makes sense on 6.1".
Yes and no. The A12 will be smaller but it won't be cheaper when 7nm wafers are more expensive and yields should also be worse.
The A11 on a more mature 10nm should be cheaper for Apple to put in a less expensive phone.

Changed my mind. Won't buy a new iPhone until they remove the damn notch... Happy enough with the 8.

I just hope Apple doesn't go back to reserving a new feature for the larger, plus-sized flagship model.

Product differentiation is the tried and true way Apple has always enticed people to move up the price ladder. Of course they're going to offer additional features for the largest phone.
