I said it before and I'll say it again, I want a bigger screen not a taller screen. But I am very invested in the iOS ecosystem. I'm not sure it is enough to keep me though.

The truth been told i was exacly like you last year when i switched to android , but google has a very nice ecosystem to , the only "advantage" in my opinion is the itunes syncing but with samsung kies is almos as easy (and i say almost becouse i have all my music in itunes ...) now i can´t see myself going back to the iphone ....

eh i'm not a fan of the overall style. I want something that looks different like going from the 3g/3gs to the 4/4s. Regardless i'm going to get one, enjoy it, forget about it but still would have like to see something different.
Also agree about the 2 two, not a huge fan but i guess that's what cases are for.

Samsung Kies is an embarrassment to mankind..

You've ignored or missed my point. You shouldn't buy a phone based on how it looks. Which is how their post came across. Buy it because it will do what you want.

The specs 'are' nice but nothing I personally need. I'm still using my 3GS without a hitch. Screen is more than fine for mail, web, books, etc. The iOS ecosystem and dependability between phone, pad and computer is still superior to anything anyone can yet show me.
Despite wishing for a new phone, it's just not needed. I'd like one, but won't be buying new iPhone in the near future.

On the other hand, I do wonder why Apple does lag behind othe producers. With all their expertise, you'd think they could make the ultimate phone while still providing size, battery life, ecosystem, quality, screen size, camera, etc. that would at least please, or shut up the whiners.

As a WP7.5 user i kinda have to upgrade because of what MS did to existing users, it sucks but hey its no more than what Apple does to its OS X users.

Besides i'm eligible to upgrade anyway, and what i'm seeing on the Apple front isn't enticing me back...which is why i'm seriously considering the Lumia.

Why would Tim Cook say they were doubling down on security and then all this leaking of parts? It really makes no sense...wouldn't they think about suppliers leaking stuff around their secret boardroom table? I can't imagine Tim will make any comment on 'that' recent comment of his, but if this is the actual 'new' iPhone they will look a bit dumb. I really hope this is a red herring, it would be a hilarious smack in the face of blogs, forums, websites etc if it were...but I doubt it is. Shame really, Tim should choose his words a little more carefully next time. Wish they would just get on and release it or get the invites out for the event! Lead up to Apple events just seem to get longer and longer!! :p

I actually like the two tone design. I think overall the phone looks great. Strange getting use to the slightly taller look, but that's just because I've been looking at the 4 and 4S for so long. But in all honesty with the two tone I've never run an iPhone naked so it doesn't really matter. It will either be covered with a custom Gelaskins or a case.

What I don't like is that with iOS 6 already on my 4S I don't know if there is that "wow" factor to actually get me to spend all that $$ to upgrade this time. To me (and yeah I know all the rumored changes) it still seems like an "S" type of update. I know things may change when I see it in person or after the Apple presentation but right now on the fence. I think my 4S rocks. Not in a fanboy way, but in a it's not broken, dated and if Apple didn't even come out with a new phone this year I'd be perfectly happy using my 4S for another year. It's been the first time I've said "I don't need to upgrade because I'm happy with my phone". So I may sit this one out and see what comes around next. Or may be pre-ordering it like everyone else.

I've said I wanted a bigger screen too and admit one of the "wider as well as taller" guys and understand that 16:9 screen but again not sure if it's enough of a jump in overall size to get me to upgrade.

All that being said I think if you have an iPhone 4 or older, contract is eligible it would be a great phone to get, but if you are have a iPhone 4S got it on launch day or later, not sure if it would really be worth it??

Because the phone needs more than the two external antennas. LTE needs four, not sure about which of those can be shared with other cell radios. There's also WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

The diagram they showed at the unveiling of the iPhone 4 had all of those, except for LTE, being handled by the outside bands.

With the Verizon iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S they no longer use the sides of the phone as part of the antenna system, just the top and bottom as redundant cell antennas:

So the 4S has the WiFi, GPS, and bluetooth behind the glass already.

The leaked 'unibody' design seems to follow the same route:

i like the new 'design', although that may be because i've always liked apple using only black and white, reminds me of my first gen nano - the model that made me fall in love with apple, aha.
i think i'll get a 4S though, as i doubt i'll be able to afford this one :(

Agree 100%. Big mis-step by Apple. I don't need to see an extra line of text in the contacts list, I need a wider screen to have a better media experience. Tall & skinny = lame.

WTF? Turn the phone on it's side and you have a 16:9 screen perfect for watching media. The viewable area will be much improved over the iPhone 4S (no black bars).

So Apple gives you the perfect screen ratio for watching media, and you bitch about it... seems you're not going to be happy with an iPhone regardless.

Nevermind.

I have to say that this design looks very crowded. Very unlike Apple.

The bottom with the headphone jack, speakers, mic, dock connector and the camera above the top speaker lack spacing and don't get me started on the two-tone back (although it'll probably get rid of the reception issues).

If this is the new design Jonny is taking steps backwards or he spent too much time looking at Samsung's designs for the patent case.

Why would Tim Cook say they were doubling down on security and then all this leaking of parts?

I was surprised that anyone took Cook seriously when he said that they were doubling down on secrecy.

At the time, it seemed to me that it was just a typical bit of self-deprecating humor from an old Alabama boy. Southerners tend to poke fun at themselves (and others) that way.

He seemed to be restating an obvious goal, one which is impossible to obtain. In other words, he was poking fun at the interviewer for such a dumb question.

But, that was just my take. YMMV :)

It's a smartphone not only an iPod. And it's been stated (a lot) that landscape mode will be worse for scaling websites and ordinary apps will just look silly in landscape mode (take the address book as an example). But hey you get another row of icons and/or twitter babble. Progress.

The two tone design is only acceptable if they get rid of those idiotic antenna bands.

Are they seriously keeping those?? Give me a break. There are countless other phones on the market that don't need out-of-place, off-color stripes on all sides of the device to function properly.

This phone is looking less and less attractive to me, and I've never owned a smartphone other than the iPhone.

The two tone is rather hideous, but Apple's not well known for there telephone making expertise. If that's what it takes to make it function properly than so be it.

With some luck, if this phone works out, perhaps next year or the year thereafter they'll give J. I've the authority to do what he does best. Create stylish smart looking designs.

Any old bloke can use the ever so exotic rectangle as inspiration.

This! It looks like Samsung trying to do Apple design...

...I don't know, he seemed pretty sincere at the time. I am familiar with southern dry humour but I think he was wasn't joking. Anyway, let's see soon!

The screen is taller, therefore it is bigger...

So what if Apple only increased the width of the iPhone screen, does that make it okay? No it doesn't. When we say bigger it means overall bigger, not just a tad bit taller. To me, and a lot of others, increasing only the height is just as insane as increasing only the width. A 4.3 inch screen (increased in height and width) would have been perfect. The only reason people think its okay to increase the height only is because Apple did it. And i bet if Apple only increased width, a lot of people would be okay with it, simply because Apple did it. Guys, its okay to say that the new iPhones aesthetics will look horrible. You guys literally get brainwashed into thinking whatever Apple does is the right way, well newsflash, its not.

No no no

I think knowing that this was the next iPhone design was what made Steve give up on apple and die.

I love iOS. I'm heavily invested in it with an iPad and a couple Macs. What is frustrating to me is lack of choice. You get your choice of colors but same design. Since 2010 we've had essentially the same design, although now we get a slightly larger screen.

I don't think two or three diffent iPhones would kill Apple. Give those who want a 4.5" screen a phone, and keep one for those who want a 3.5". Some differing designs couldn't hurt either. People like variety, and choice. I'm not a fan of Android, but I'll concede they at least give you choice of a features you personally like.

Some things work well as "One Size Fits All". The iPhone isn't one of them.

Not really... Apple will keep this design FOREVER.

Sure, as technology improves, it will be refined to a more ideal form, but it will still be recognisably an iPhone. Why do you think Apple got so upset when Samsung copied the format? They want this design to BE the iPhone.

Your comment shows you don't really get Apple's design ethos, although you're in good company on this forum. Maybe you should consider other options as others are doing?

As for me, I love the design.

Nevermind.

I was speaking to the comment about the new screens unsuitability for media. I think you have to agree it didn't make much sense.

You may be right about current software looking odd on the new screen, but software can be modified to use it more effectively, no?

I don't really follow other phones, but aren't the majority 16:9 screens anyway? Do they look silly?

Nevermind.

Disappointed

If indeed this is an accurate representation of the "new iPhone", I for one will feel disappointed. Yes yes I get that there will be more than just a change in the iPhone screen / exterior dimensions, the guts will be faster - I get that. But the problem is twofold:

1) Android phones have undergone a furious pace of evolution such that the "new iPhone" feels a bit like "been there / done that". Larger Android phones have existed for some time now, so simply adding one more row of icons worth of length to the iPhone doesn't feel very exciting (at least, certainly not to me).

2) iOS hasn't significantly changed in quite some time - years, in fact. It still sports the same row of icons and functions in the same way as version 1, albeit with refinements. There have been very few updates of significance over the past few years (Siri is more hype than substance in my opinion) while Android seems to morph every 6 to 12 months due to fierce competition.

The net result? Well, to me it feels like Apple is taking a tried-and-true design, extending it by a few millimetres, and then saying "there you go, new iPhone!" To be honest, it seems downright lazy of them. Kind of like "yeah we made your old phone slightly longer, it's new now, take it or leave it" attitude.

Of course, these are just my opinions - I have a hard time imagining myself switching to Android, but on the other hand, I don't feel Apple is giving me much incentive to stay with them and I really don't feel they are working very hard for my money.
