It is the result of a unibody design that increases structural rigidity and allows the phone to be thinner.

Also to everyone saying this is just a stretched 4s, you are incredibly ignorant. The fact is, if many of the rumors are true, this could potentially be the biggest upgrade to the iPhone ever and some of you seem to be cherry picking these leaks for things to criticize. We are potentially looking at a fully upgraded external design with a larger screen, an incredibly thin design, unibody integration, and that's not even scratching the surface. On the inside I think we'll see an all new A6 chip with dramatic enhancements, 1gb of faster ram, a larger battery, 4g LTE, a new faster dock connector, and possibly a better FaceTime camera and NFC. HOW ARE SOME OF YOU STILL SAYING THIS ISN'T A BIG UPGRADE. IT'S CHANGING SOME OF THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS OF THE IPHONE FOR THE BETTER. WHAT ARE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT?!?!!

You sir are the smartest man on MR. (only because you are saying what I have been all this time!) Those that call this a stretched 4s are either blind or stupid. I'll let each of them come in and tell us which they are.

Who cares about the materials?

It's the same old boring apps on the same old boring iOS grid.

Nobody gives a flying frig about A5 or A6 or whatever...either the phone does something interesting, or it doesn't.

There's an awful lot going on behind the scenes at Apple. IMO it would be a mistake to simply assume this is a "real" Ive design.
I don't disagree with you.

Let's forget who designed the currently prominent "long & narrow" model. Just the mere suggestion this could be iPhone 5, reveals a disturbing trend at Apple.

Even if completely wrong, it's hard to imagine Apple having a totally different design ready. One that uses a large 4.5" + display with a conventional aspect ratio such as the two top Android phones of the present day.

It appears Apple's about to fall woefully behind.

You have a very interesting point. I concur.

So when you turn it landscape mode to watch movies or video...which is what normal users do how is it not "wider?"

Utilizing the standard reference dimensions for the iPhone, width and height are quoted in the Portrait orientation. However you characterize it, tall and skinny or wide and short, the new (rumored) shape and size are rather awkward and don't add to the media experience.

----------

WTF? Turn the phone on it's side and you have a 16:9 screen perfect for watching media. The viewable area will be much improved over the iPhone 4S (no black bars).

So Apple gives you the perfect screen ratio for watching media, and you bitch about it... seems you're not going to be happy with an iPhone regardless.

Nevermind.

No, actually I love the iPhone and did NOT advocate for a larger screen. But if they're going to enlarge it, they should have made it a better size.

I take pride in being neither blind nor stupid:p. But i do just get iriated when people complain about things like this being called "incremental" or "just a stretched 4s". its just not and the sad thing is people are still going to buy it even if they're the ones complaining. Same deal with the people who said the new ipad is really just the ipad 2s.

imbalance

Here is what's at the bottom
- Headphone jack
- The speaker grill
- The mic grill
- Charger port

Heres whats at the top
- The power button

See the problem there?

Then there is the back camera/flash, its just way too close the the edge of the 2 tone back, even if you put a case on it, the two tone edge will show through the camera cutout, its that near to the camera lens.

You know this how?

Most people will still carry a wallet for cash, special credit cards, driver's license.

Having NFC doesn't mean our wallet automatically disappears. Not yet, anyway. Perhaps one day.

Just a note: LiquidMetal is not radio transparent.

(One of the inventors suggested that perhaps the whole metal back could be made into an antenna, which confused some reporters.)

Still doesn't change the fact if I lose my phone, some one has access to my credit cards or dept cards.

Sorry to poop on the iphone5 excitement but when I look at this mockup next to the 4S my natural reaction is that the 4S is the newer model.

The 4 is smaller, looks just as well made and the thinness at least in these mockup images looks negligible. The 4 just looks more thought out and balanced.

If the 5 was just a little wider to give it similar dimensions as the 4 it would be way more exciting... Ah well OS6 may have some neat things going on... \

Maybe next one for a truly 'different' redesign...

The camera does not have a 180 degree field of view; you're talking nonsense.

The S3 is a fantastic phone, both HW and SW.

And inferior in terms of graphics horsepower and software availability/efficiency/integration to the 4S, let alone the 5/6/New iPhone.

I'm not sure I care too much what it looks like. I just want to be able to keep my unlimited data plan on verizon. I know....Spring has unlimited. Crappy service here though. Verizon covers me EVERYWHERE. I'm just not shelling out the unsubsidized price for one.
I like the two-tone design....looks like a lot of cases that are available.

Taiwanese pop star whips up a frenzy after posting images of his ‘iPhone 5′ to China’s Twitter

http://thenextweb.com/asia/2012/09/...renzy-posting-images-iphone-5-chinas-twitter/

Android may be dominating the Chinese smartphone market, but that doesn’t mean that China isn’t excited about Apple’s next iPhone. In just a few hours, a Taiwanese pop star has attracted over 100,000 comments and reposts on his Sina Weibo microblog with a post containing suspicious-looking photos of a so-called “iPhone 5″.
It’s not uncommon for Jimmy Lin, who has risen to fame in Asia as a singer, actor and race car driver, to receive hundreds of reposts and comments from his 13.5 million followers, but his recent iPhone rumor has struck a chord, attracting more than 80,000 reposts just five hours after being sent.
“Today I confirmed that the iPhone 5 will be longer and have an aluminum back like the iPad,” Lin wrote, as noticed by Sina Tech Hong Kong. “While it has a four-inch screen, it’s thinner, though it feels about the same in the hand. The headphone jack has also been moved to the bottom. As for the dock connector, the iPhone 5 doesn’t use the 30-pin connector, instead changing to a smaller 19-pin connector.”
The post was accompanied by a collage of Lin playing with the device and showing it from multiple angles. Given the irregularities in the font on the back of the phone and its cheap-looking bottom, the device is almost certainly a fake, though it does bear a resemblance to low-quality factory mockups that appear to be cropping up elsewhere. Even so, Lin has benefitted from the increased publicity that has played off the intense interest surrounding the upcoming iPhone.

As home to most of Apple’s supply chain, China is known for being a common originator for leaks, but it’s also notorious for producing fake leaks and tips. The journey between Chinese and English language rumors also frequently causes confusion, as mockups are sometimes mistaken for leaks as they cross from one side to the other. For instance, a concept video for a razor-thin iPhone featuring a laser keyboard and a holographic display went viral in China last year and left quite a few consumers believing it was real.
Sina Weibo’s emergence as one of China’s hottest social networks has also helped feed rumors. The service, which has over 360 million users, now enforces anti-rumor policies in order to comply with governmental pressure after rumors of a military coup circulated on the service earlier this year.
Though some reports suggest that sales of the current-generation iPhone have dropped significantly in China, The next-generation iPhone will likely set new records in the country when it arrives. China is believed to have over 120 million consumers who can afford a smartphone and have yet to buy one. Apple should have significant pent up demand in China, as the majority of prospective customers are on China Mobile, which has yet to officially sell the iPhone.

I have a few comments and questions:

  1. When someone says they are going to skip this one, do they think the next phone will be different? The 3G and 4 were followed by the same design with internal improvements so it stands to reason that whatever phone comes out will be around until 2014.
  2. I think the rumored internal improvements are good, but I still have a problem with the physical design. Sitting on the table, the 4 and 4S are the best looking phones out. Holding either in my hand to talk…not so much. I think a teardrop design would make the new phone look great. However, since this is something so expensive, I have decided to go with an Otterbox or something similar.
  3. Do people think there is going to be "One more thing"? When was the last time we got something that totally came out of the blue during a presentation? Yes, it would be nice to have, but I don't think anything totally surprising will happen.
  4. How are these rumored designs showing this is a uni-body device? If the back/middle section connected to the bands (something I may be missing) then I could understand a little bit, but they don't seem to. A Macbook uni-body or iPad are obviously cut out of one piece, but I don't see this in the pictures so far. The band looks similar to what I have sitting in front of me now.

Not that this is a ground breaking post. But in about a months time do you know how ridiculous this video is going to be?

Guys, just give it a few more weeks ok?

It's a little concerning that your emotional well being is tied up with a damn phone, but hey, if that's what fuels your rocket, that's what fuels your rocket.

Cheers.

Emotional wellbeing? How could any rational person even glimmer at inferring that from my statement? Would you like me to post graphical benchmark results for the 4S and S3 comparison? You're the only one who's shown any sign of a fragile emotional state here; don't try and put that on me.

You sound very upset. If it'll help you feel better, sure, put 'em up!

:)

Nobody gives a ****, but hey, like I said before, if that's what fuels yer rocket, I'm certainly not going to stand in your way. :)

Does your attempt at *T-wording* make you feel better? I'm glad to have helped your emotional state :)

Does anyone like the design of the original iPhone the best? Unfortunately, I never had a chance to get that iPhone.
