With DS4 and Xbox controller support, I wonder if that means remote play will be fully supported on iPad now? Right now I can remote into my PS4, but I’m relegated to using the screen as a controller, which is near friggin impossible.

Hopefully, you won't need to buy a dongle.

I don't know how much it differs from i(Phone)OS but surely this is heading down a path that leads to more fragmentation? Something they have been noticeably quieter about in recent times.

It might seem that way at first blush, but it's actually quite the opposite. This is actually a smart integration play. By allowing the OS to vary but also facilitating things like shared apps and screens, it actually boosts the whole ecosystem while not forcing the gimping of parts of it.

Here is a guy who is REALLY excited to be coding (and mousing) on his iPad:

Interestingly his excitement has nothing to do with Catalyst. Tim's betting on Catalyst. Satya (I think) is betting on Web Assembly and PWAs. MSFT is likely not too far off from all their important productivity tools being platform/hware agnostic via WA/PWA. Who wins ???

For some years now the iPad hardware has been able to hold its own compared to the Mac. It’s about time Apple started to take off the reigns and let iPad shine.

Unfortunately it's not coding on the iPad. It's coding on the Desktop computer while using iPad as a remote terminal through an app called Coder. You can use almost any tablet/smartphone these days to achieve that. It's a lot of pain, there's always lag. you always need a fast constant Internet connection and a remote/cloud computer and all the software you create runs on that remote computer.

It's so bad you still cannot use iPad for serious/productive coding even with iPad OS.

I will probably use my mini 4 as a public beta mule when it comes out next month. Hoping for good things, I don’t want to buy a 5 until Black Friday sales.
A8/2GB of the mini 4 is the worst case platform for iPadOS 13 so I’m keeping my expectations in check. It’s my only iPad so I won’t be installing the beta, but I’ll be glad for you to be the guinea pig! :D ;) :)

I'm amazed how Apple is dividing us into the rich who will be content creators with $15k machines, and the rest of the poor people who can pretend to create, but will only be consumers with $1k iPads and iPhones.
Thanks Tim Apple!

Don't get wrapped up in the hype about what you need to create content. It is too easy to believe that to be a creator you need a computer that can handle multiple streams of 8K video, hundreds of audio tracks, or can run 10 VMs simultaneously. In the real world, most professionals are making nice livings with moderate level computers.

Your phone can probably record 4K. A MacBook (less powerful than the MacBook Air) can edit 4K.

So can an iPad Pro.

For most media consumption, there is no discernible difference for example, between a 1080P video and a 4K video due to the devices used for that consumption.

How long before you begin to see separate prices for iPad and iPhone apps again? First they encourage the merger of the two and when revenue probably fell based on that, the iPadOS is born. The over/under is one year for the appearance of ... the iPadOS app store.

This is what consumers never open their eyes to, just like Apple wants you to believe you need 2 devices, a macbook and an ipad.

Apple software engineers have been diligently hard at work, and it’s clear now with multitasking that’s been revamped, split view is much more user-friendly and finally I can see to Safari pages together side-by-side, especially for comparisons for reading in between websites.
You can view two Safari tabs side by side presently on iOS 12. Drag the tab and move to the right, done.

This transition of the iPad from being a consumption device to a content creation device is taking FOREVER. All the iPad needs now is multi-user sign on. I know why they don't want to add it but it's inevitable at this point.

This would have been useful for me years ago. Now I don’t care as much. Originally the only iPad in the house was essentially mine. My wife would use it and it would have been nice if she could have her own account. But now she has her own iPad. With prices going down on iPads there are probably more situations like mine where people in the same house all have their own iPad. So while I like the idea I’m not sure it is as nice as it would have been in the past. And from Apple’s point of view making it hard to share iPads is probably great for sales.

This is a good thing. Developers aren't going to waste time developing apps for the iPad if there's no promise of a significant revenue stream. Having iPad specific APIs at the OS level + the ability to charge more makes it easier to justify development budgets on a fully featured iPad app experience, not just a blown up iPhone app.

I'm sure there is a very strong marketing/perception angle to this decision. There was no reason they could not have continued having one iOS with unique features for the iPad, but this new name makes the iPad stand on its own legs. It gives it recognition that it previously didn't have. This means they are serious about their tablet business, rather than the iPad being seen as a larger-screen iPhone.

There's a LOT that I like about this, particularly Sidecar. The main thing that is missing for me is the ability to run R code. I know that I can run an R server and connect to it over the internet, but I can't do that on most flights here, and I can't do that easily when I'm in other countries. If I could run R code natively, then this really would be a laptop replacement for me. I think this restriction on running other code will be around for awhile unfortunately.

You may be missing the point that Visual Studio is a HTML/CSS/JS app (reference link below). MSFT is hard at work converting Excel to the same. It wont require Coder and a server pretty soon. There is a reason MSFT is building Chromium into the Windows OS. Will Apple support WA/PWA fully when it erodes the value of Catalyst??? Link:

Visual Studio Code is indeed an HTML/CSS/JS app. But it's a Desktop Electron app which is a big difference from Web App. It cannot run in the browser/iPad OS because it needs low level system access. Visual Studio Code doesn't work on iPad OS. But it does indeed work on Windows.

Catalyst is a totally different story. It doesn't allow to run Desktop apps on the iOS. It's vice versa. It allows to run iOS apps on the Mac. There's no connection between Catalyst and Visual Studio Code.

Great video, Dan. I’m super excited to get iPadOS on my IPP. I barely use my MacBook anymore, and now I’ll have even fewer reasons to power it up. Mouse and Drive support, better text selection, and slide over improvements are fantastic. My biggest debate now is whether I wanna put the public beta on my only device!

Question for anyone who has used iPadOS...when you have multiple apps in slide over, and slide over is closed/off screen, does selecting an app (in slideover) from the dock open it up in slideover? That’s the way it currently works, hoping that behavior persists with multiple apps in slideover. It will be great to place my frequently-used-but-not-necessary-to-keep-open-in-fullscreen apps like calendar, messages, email, etc. in slideover.

Likely this is why Satya is building Chromiun into Window OS. Issue with Electron is that is has to drag Chromium along to run even on the desktop. What if it was free of this burden ?? What if VS ran the same on the Desktop or your iPad (Tim Apple's support needed of course). Your browser, your desktop, or your phone (with Fuschia???) all the same. May never happen, but it is not inconceivable.

One of the biggest indirect benefits of now having iPadOS is the near certain guarantee that we can expect new features / changes to be presented annually at WWDC! Up till now, there were a few gap years where the iPad line just kept up with iOS alongside the iPhone
Finally!!! What took them so long. Usb access is great. 64gb iPads are feasible now. I can connect my usb c drive directly. And the mouse support will get refined over time maybe not in. iPad os 1, but likely next year and make it a standard feature. Word docs will be easier to edit!

My 2018 iPad Pro has been my favorite and most useful device since the iPhone. I get much work done with this and the pencil.

If they can allow iPads to sync songs to an iPhone via usb connection, my MacBook would be used only a few times in a year. Game over! Maybe to pay property tax lol cause their website doesn’t work with iOS safari.
