Likely this is why Satya is building Chromiun into Window OS. Issue with Electron is that is has to drag Chromium along to run even on the desktop. What if it was free of this burden ?? What if VS ran the same on the Desktop or your iPad (Tim Apple's support needed of course). Your browser, your desktop, or your phone (with Fuschia???) all the same. May never happen, but it is not inconceivable.

Doesn't work this way so far. And at least not in foreseeable iPadOS. Apple strictly protects their mobile OSs from running third-party javascript engines (Chrome/Chromium).

I don't know how much it differs from i(Phone)OS but surely this is heading down a path that leads to more fragmentation? Something they have been noticeably quieter about in recent times.
It shouldn’t. The APIs are all basically the same between iOS and iPadOS. It’s easy to modify iOS Apps to deal with split screen or multiple instances on iPadOS.

Remember, the iPad isn’t like Android tablets. There’s a huge market of iPad specific Apps in The App Store which shows developers aren’t taking short cuts (like universal Apps) and have no issues with the additional work required to create those iPad specific Apps. Going just a little bit further to support the latest features in iPadOS seems a given considering what they’ve invested to create that App in the first place.

Why does every review I’ve seen say that mouse usage isn’t a standard feature? It let’s really takes 3 swipes to get to the button to turn on.
Unlike Desktop OS like macOS and windows, which you plug your mouse and use it, you cannot simply plug your mouse and expect the cursor to show up. Hence “not a standard feature”.

This transition of the iPad from being a consumption device to a content creation device is taking FOREVER. All the iPad needs now is multi-user sign on. I know why they don't want to add it but it's inevitable at this point.

The day ANY iPad can create, design, and prepare for publication a PDF-compliant book (color or just straight black-and-white text), incorporating Photoshop-manipulated images, has a Color Profile assigned to it, is able to use 3rd-party fonts from Monotype, etc. (and not just the ones Apple provides in the iOS).... the day you can SEND or even SAVE the PDF file to an external device (no, using the unreliable iCloud does not count) .... the day you can control and manipulate all the myriad of things that go into producing a physical book.....

Well, yes, then.... and ONLY then.... will the iPad even be close to being taken seriously as a replacement for the computer.

Sorry, Tim Cook. People still read books; and people still need real desktop computers to code, to design, and to produce books .... just not work on 8K monitors for video.

... Still waiting for iPad versions of Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign (!) and, yes, even QuarkXPress. Until THAT happens, the iPad will always be nothing but a device for consuming media. It is NOT a creation tool.

You may be missing the point that Visual Studio is a HTML/CSS/JS app (reference link below). MSFT is hard at work converting Excel to the same. It wont require Coder and a server pretty soon. There is a reason MSFT is building Chromium into the Windows OS. Will Apple support WA/PWA fully when it erodes the value of Catalyst??? Link:

https://www.ryadel.com/en/visual-st...llo-world-sample-vs2017-template-quick-start/

I don’t think WA/PWA will be as big as people say. How many “write once run anywhere” initiatives have we had over the years?

There are two constants in the computer world. The first is ever faster CPUs, GPUs, storage and do on. The second is developers pushing the limits of what that brand new hardware can do.

While WA/PWA may promise the ability to create an App that everyone can use it still suffers from “common denominator syndrome”. Something that works everywhere will never be able to fully utilize the latest hardware your device has. How could it if it must remain compatible with everyone? Years ago people said Chrome would be the Holy Grail of software, allowing you to run ”Apps” on any device as long as it had Chrome. How did that turn out?

Since developers will always be striving to create new and powerful Apps there will always be a healthy market for “native” software. And that native software will be the stuff that grabs people’s attention. Not some WA/PWA “App” that gives you basics like email, Twitter or Instagram.

Unfortunately it's not coding on the iPad. It's coding on the Desktop computer while using iPad as a remote terminal through an app called Coder. You can use almost any tablet/smartphone these days to achieve that. It's a lot of pain, there's always lag. you always need a fast constant Internet connection and a remote/cloud computer and all the software you create runs on that remote computer.

It's so bad you still cannot use iPad for serious/productive coding even with iPad OS.

I'm going to try and play with this over the weekend, but by using a cloud solution, like Digital Ocean vice my home workstation. The demos I've seen seem to indicate it's pretty responsive. Yes, you'll need WiFi, LTE, or tethering, but I'm going to assume most coders (even at my low level) already have all the internet resources required.

You are correct that this is a universal solution and not one specific to the iPad, but with iOS 13 we get mouse support which makes this a more viable solution for iPad users.

How long before you begin to see separate prices for iPad and iPhone apps again? First they encourage the merger of the two and when revenue probably fell based on that, the iPadOS is born. The over/under is one year for the appearance of ... the iPadOS app store.

I realise what you are saying can have a possible detrimental effect on my wallet if it comes to be true, which it most likely will, considering the opportunity presented.

What I would like to see is a reasonably priced app for iPhone, reasonably priced app for iPad, and reasonably priced app for the Mac.

What we will most likely see is that with little effort, developers are going to have one app built to look different on 3 platforms and, therefore, become a candidate for subscription model instead of having three that look, feel and work with the screen estate of the platforms rather than just be ports that Catalyst might initially bring.

How about a Hands-On on RAM Management ???

All these features & capabilities don't come for free, & many will remain resident in Main Memory (i.e., DRAM).

Back in 2016, iPhones & iPads had Good RAM Management ... B+ level.

That was the Good, then it got Bad, & now it's gotten Ugly !

AAPL's VP of Software Engineering seems to have lost ALL control of the troops, as RAM Management is currently @ a D- level !

That's NOT good !

I'm sure ALL MR readers would appreciate it if MR would come up with a RAM Management "educational article" or two.

You will also need a Digital Ocean paid account with an instance of at least 8GB RAM for running Docker (that Coder is being installed to) and VS Code extensions - $40+/month. And if you work over LTE you will pay $$$ for your cellular data. Lag will highly depend on your connection.

You won't see the lag on the videos because it's a lag between your click on the keyboard and the screen change. I tried Coder with 200Mbps fiber Internet 100 meters between workstations, not even cellular, and the lag was extremely noticeable.

I don't think it's a solution for coding on the iPad, it's just one of the playgrounds for testing small code edits for simple web app development.

Great point. Near certain imo.
[doublepost=1560407520][/doublepost]Back in the days of my first iPad 2, I was hoping iOS would evolve to become an independent OS on the iPad. For years all it felt like was an oversize iPhone. I’m excited to see where iPadOS will head too and if Apple, will truly develop it.
[doublepost=1560407704][/doublepost]
I'm sure there is a very strong marketing/perception angle to this decision. There was no reason they could not have continued having one iOS with unique features for the iPad, but this new name makes the iPad stand on its own legs. It gives it recognition that it previously didn't have. This means they are serious about their tablet business, rather than the iPad being seen as a larger-screen iPhone.
Tim has always championed the iPad as a laptop replacement.

I’m definitely looking forward to the new features in iPadOS, but wonder how well it’s going to run on a mini 4. I guess it’ll be adequate or Apple would have raised the cutoff.
I installed on my Mini 4 and although is a bit sluggish it runs ok. I think the final release will work better because there is probably debug code causing overhead and performance issues. All the multitasking features work, and even works as a SideCar display from my MacBook Air 2018.

This looks very good and are much needed changes for the iPad. This makes my consideration of getting a iPad Pro 11” later this year even more probable.

Great video also! I had not seen iPadOs in action yet.

I think the biggest new feature for the iPad is the announcement that you can now compile the same app for MacOS or iPadOS. I'm not a coder but it seams to be that this will usher in a new generation of feature rich apps, maybe even at parity with their desktop counterparts.

Would be interested in hearing the thoughts of people who understand this better.

The sidecar looks great, here is hoping with it being an official thing that apple will bring out some official stands. I would a very sturdy and fully adjustable stand to go with the iPad for times when it is to be a graphics tablet.

nowadays people cheering companies (apple) for bringing features we had 15 to 20 years ago as normal.
the whole tech bubble is just insane.

ipados, 2019 yeah ... a download manager WOWOWOWOW
They are probably replacing a tool that worked so well in the past two decades to something that does pretty much the same thing in a slightly different way eventually, just like they are developing AI and robot to do something a human can do and might do it better. For me, just like what Douglas Rushkoff says, tech industry nowadays is “designing tools to replace human rather than extending their capability”, probably as a form of cost reduction. So, I want to ask Google, whether their CEO will voluntarily handle their position to an AI/robot created by Google? How about running a tech company using only AI/robot?

Far stretched for sure, but I Have no idea whether those CEO would love to answer this question.

If they can allow iPads to sync songs to an iPhone via usb connection, my MacBook would be used only a few times in a year. Game over! Maybe to pay property tax lol cause their website doesn’t work with iOS safari.

Yeah unfortunately there are several instances where I need my MacBook. Music to Phone and Watch being one. Also need the MacBook for editing MP3 metadata and compressing video with hand break. Then there’s the simple file downloading and management that is currently much easier with MacOS; hopefully iPadOS will be a big step at making this aspect easier.

I honestly don’t see this happening anytime soon. The TV makes sense since people obviously are going to want their own content on the Family TV. iPads are likely to get passed down to family members while the family TV gets replaced. Laptops in general are cheap these days and homes stopped having a family computer at a desk a while ago. Also most people’s computer is a smartphone these days anyways and everyone already has one. Wanting an iPad is more of a personal choice. People aren’t buying a single family iPad.

Well the PS4 controller pairs without a problem and there's been a fair but of FIFA19 played on it remotely without any problems as such. On the 9.7 pro the graphics are a bit "fuzzy" with the odd artefacts and a bit of a lag now and again but I never tried it pre 13 so can't say if that's the norm.

With DS4 and Xbox controller support, I wonder if that means remote play will be fully supported on iPad now? Right now I can remote into my PS4, but I’m relegated to using the screen as a controller, which is near friggin impossible.

I guess that all depends on the App, no one rule fits all scenarios:

If the App is the same on both then a universal app makes sense.
I as a consumer am unlikely to buy an app 3 times for a desktop, iPad and iPhone.
If I buy an app for the desktop, then I expect the iPad/iPhone app to be free most of the time.

But from an OS point of view all the iOS (phone, iPad, car, watch) are likely to share a lot of code at the OS level regardless of what Apple calls it. As an example, they are not going to write different file system code for each platform.
Developers will be doing the same. They are not going to write the non visual parts of the app again for each platform and will share a fair amount of the code.
[doublepost=1560415963][/doublepost]
I like what I'm seeing. Eventually it will be a real MacBook alternative for those who want a different workflow.
Once they complete mouse support and present a proper file system.
I am designing apps for customers at the moment that have zip files and iOS just doesn't give a good customer experience on that front.

Well my iPad on the new OS just kept rebooting every hour or so had to roll back to 12 beta till 13 becomes more stable plus lots of issues on Catalina with artwork missing from iTunes import
