The fact that this thing is twice the price of the two cables separately and doesn’t come with the proper power adapter because of “environmental reasons” should put people off. Don’t buy it and Apple won’t try this sh*t again.
you really shouldn't tell people what they should and should not buy. these type of products will always be around go tell belkin and mophie to stop doing the same too while you are at it. They are also In this price range.

I really like the idea of this. The Apple Watch dock on its own is £75 without a power brick.
I am one of the dumb asses who caved and pulled the trigger on the duo. Mine arrives today. As has been previously said, those that have bought one seem to like it.

Am I the only person that uses their phone all day then charges it at night while I sleep? I feel like I am listening to these comments. It can charge as slow as it wants while I sleep as long as it’s full when I wake up. 🤷🏻‍♂️
yeah just a reason for people to hate

people are used to 7.5w charging so any improvement is an improvement. I charge my phone once a day as it lasts forever so this is the only time I will charge it anyway

Astonishing that Apple feel comfortable reusing this branding whilst at the same time having removed it from laptops where it is genuinely useful...

certainly won't be MagSafe though. just like their solo loop were sold on there and were a piece of a crap
it's just a magnet :) not rocket science.

You can also buy only the magnets from aliexpress if you want to make something custom yourself :D

if it was that easy I'm sure more would bring one out...I'm willing to say I doubt it will work very well. it may charge but won't stick to your phone so the alignment is correct at night for example

It doesn't. Has not happened to me once. It's easily removed onehanded.
Just lift it up, like you would remove a magnet from the wall. (slightly turn it while lifting)
Ah that’s good news to hear then.

It even *deliberately slows itself down* whilst charging over night for better battery care! In this situation the max speed literally could not matter less.

This is expensive for what it is even by Apple's standards. I wonder whether it will get re-priced in the not too distant future either due to lower-than-expected sales or one or more established third party accessory makers competitors coming out with good quality cheaper equivalents.

I do hope that Apple hasn't managed to file patents on anything essential to do with this design because as a travel charger this book format with iPhone and Watch charger in the same unit is a great concept and I suspect I will but one if no other third party offer comes out but since I would only use it for travel which I'm not doing at the moment I will watch and wait to see what happens on price and/or alternatives.

I hope someone does a teardown at some point because I would be interested to know it it could have been made even smaller. As a travel accessory every mm off the length/width/thickness is valuable. The case is a fair bit bigger than the outline of the iPhone charging ring so I wonder what is in that outside area, the regular Apple magsafe charger casing stops at the edge of the ring. It also looks reasonably thick, almost as if it is slightly padded. I wonder whether some more exotic materials such as carbon fibre for the front and rear faces could have shaved a few mm off the thickness. For the money that Apple is charging such premium materials shouldn't be out of the question.

If some competitor came out with something even smaller and thinner I would happily pay this $129 asking price or even slightly more for something with this twin-charger book concept but made absolutely as thin and compact as it could possibly be. Subject to seeing a teardown I'm not 100% convinced that Apple couldn't have made this even smaller.

I know it is early days yet, but would someone who actually has the charger please tell me whether it leaves a mark on the back of the phone like the regular MagSafe charger does?

OK, someone explain this to me.
The magsafe duo has a lightning port on it, and you plug that in to the duo, then you drop your phone on the duo while you’re sleeping.
The charging speed of your phone doesn’t matter, because you’re sleeping, and as long as it’s charged when you wake up, it should be fine.
If you absolutely need a quick boost of power, just unplug the lightning cable from the duo, and plug it directly into your phone. Then, you get the full 20 W speed, and your phone can be charged super quickly.
I don’t understand this whole hemming and Hawing over the fact that it only gets to 11 W instead of 14 W with a 20 W brick. First of all, as someone who has used the regular magsafe, it rarely gets to that theoretical 15 W. Your phone has to be extremely cool, and almost dead to actually be charging at full speed.
The second that your phone starts to heat up, it instantly lowers down to somewhere between nine and 12 W.
If you start using your phone while it’s charging on the regular MagSafe, it goes even slower.
Basically what I’m saying is, if you’re planning on buying this product, don’t worry about charging speed. As long as you use the 20 W brick, it will be fine.
And in Zollo tech’s review, he used the old 18 W brick with it, and it got up to 10.7 W. So really, as long as you’re using the 18 W brick, you should be fine.
If you absolutely need fast charging, then you shouldn’t be using a wireless charger, or just unplug the lightning from the duo, and plug it directly into your phone for a quick boost.

I think your post points our pretty much the main issue with this. It doesn't really solve any problems people have and for that it's too expensive, almost like apple doesn't want you to buy it.

If it came with usb-c power brick, same (or improved) charging capabilities as the other charger at $69 it would be a good product for many.

If you travel A LOT, maybe. Otherwise, this product is a waste of money. Buy a HomePod mini and throw that in your occasional travel bag instead.

Good review. Too bad it does not come with the power source. Really cheap of Apple for such an expansive accessory. I purchased one, but will end up returning it and wait for the Belkin 3/1 Magsafe.

Apple‘s product would be good if I was traveling as usual, but lack of a power source really is annoying and inexcusable. This is one time when Apple is truly ripping off its loyal customers.

the reason why Apple gave you a USB-C to lightning is because this product is meant for you to travel with it which means you stick the cable and the charger in your travel bag.

why they didn't give you a charging brick is because you have the option of using the 20W or the 30W. If they included the 30W, the price of the product goes up (due to the cost of the brick and as well as the product dimensions being larger). if they included the 20W, it would be cheaper, but people might end up buying the 30W to get the best experience, throwing away the 20W to ewaste potentially.

Apple's decision makes sense.

Yeah I highly doubt that. You're telling me that Apple didn't include the 20W charger because people would throw it away and go out and buy the 30W charger? I'm sorry but that makes absolutely no sense to me.

Well the good news is the material feels pretty sturdy - I think it's going to hold up better than the iPad keyboards. It'll certainly get touched less, which should help. We'll see how the white holds up to dirt though, especially travelling about.

Just use the one that came with your pho- oh...

In all seriousness I'm absolutely happy with the debundling - I'd take the cable out of the box too - I have enough already and if someone doesn't they can buy one separately. The problem is entirely the price (heck, even with the plug it'd still be expensive).

Also, I wish it was USB-C. I could just carry one plug and one cable, and switch the cable between iPad and this.

Usually, I would agree with you, but in this case you need a 30w charger to max this out and I don’t have those lying around, so add another 50 bucks to the price. If Apple wants to stop giving power bricks, that is fine, but make your products operate at full capacity with the ones that you have already distributed. Business 101 and Apple has failed.

I just keep thinking how appalled Steve Jobs would be at Apple at this point, numerous iPhones, iPads, Macbook Pro’s, Air’s, powerbricks, etc. USC-C chargers my iPad Pro, but not my iPhone 12 Pro. The simplicity is gone. Apple is trying to be something for everyone and has made it worse.

No charger and $129? I do travel fairly often for medical appointments, so I do see the convenience of this device. However, it's so 'bleeping' overpriced. 🙈 I plan to contact the Guinness book of world records and proposed that Tim Cook be recorded as the greediest person that has ever walked the planet.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I was going to get a Mophie or Belkin but in reality I don’t need to charge my AirPods case that often and my watch I wear more at night for sleep tracking and alarms and just throw on. But I would prefer my phone to be easily picked up. And at $28 that’s way better than $130.

edit: I just looked up more on this pad. Micro usb to usb A for power. Shame that Anker with everything they do haven’t updated this to a usb-c port on the back for a usb-c to usb-c power solution. I’d pay another $10 for that and then get their Nano 3 usb-c plug to go with it for $16. But I’m hesitant to invest in a micro usb to usb a product.
Yeah, I can see the hesitation. The connections don’t really matter to me on a wireless charger. I haven’t had to touch them since I bought the thing. It doesnt come with a brick but an older iPad 12W brick works fine.

Well I’d like to get the adapter replaced, that was literally being sold until last year for what it’s worth. I wouldn’t have as big of an issue if they included an adapter in the box, but Apple decided to go down this path.

Apple's own website said you get 14W charging with 27W or higher power adapters. They had no caveats or anything.
I am in the same boat as you. I was chatting with 3 different people for 2 hours last night to try and resolve this. I knew I was going nowhere when the 3rd specialist asked me if the charger out of the box didn’t work. I do Love the way the duo looks and operates for travel but during the 2 hrs of chatting I realized that in reality I don’t need it and won’t be traveling for probably a year. I will likely just send it back. Plus the fact that it will leave a ring on my California poppy leather case I got yesterday....lol
