No it does not. If it had USB-C I could use my laptop charger directly with the unit to charge my phone when needed. It is what I do with my USB-C charging power bank. One small USB-C cable to charge my ear buds and wireless mouse.

Now I have to carry ANOTHER adapter around with me to use this device when I could have used the one I already had in my kit.

I think you're arguing about something else. I'm not arguing about port selection here.

In what universe is it a terrible thing to have more than one 20 or 30W charger?

We're already in the world of too many 5W chargers. Including chargers in everything would just continue down that same path.

Also, the USB-C charge wattage seems to be constantly changing. With 5W chargers, it remained the same over the years. You knew when you got a new iPhone, the 5W is enough to keep the phone indefinitely powered regardless if you played a game 10 hours straight. Now we're in the world where Apple had to upgrade the 29W to 30W or else the 29W charger couldn't keep the MacBook Air 13" powered under load indefinitely. And we're already seeing a lot of people replacing their 18W chargers so that they can get the full MagSafe speed by using a 20W so the proof is already there.

Apple doesn't mind shipping out the cords but they all of a sudden have a problem shipping out the chargers?

Cords use a fraction of the materials of a charger, take a fraction of space in the box, doesn't increase the cost of the product that much to the user, AND they remain consistent over the years so re-usability is high. USB-C chargers, not so much.

While you’re all busy hating on the product, the 45W Anker Atom 3 pairs nicely with the Duo.
I don’t think so. They don’t match aesthetically. Steve Jobs nor Apple would ever sell a black wall plug with the white dual charger.

Easier? The expectations were different, so our behavior was, depending on how far back you go.
The problem is as USB gained prominence and evolved to us can, our expectation was this was a universal solution. Now instead of proprietary plugs or a limited number of power profiles, we have tens, no, seemingly thousands of power standards Going over one plug. Millions. And some manufActures even log the hardware of the power supply and limit the profile or prevent its use of it isn’t approved.
There was a time.... the 80’s, when everything was perfect. Power came over the wire, only 6 people had cell phones, you could talk an operator into a free long distance call on a pay phone once and awhile. Teletypes were so loud they could drown out your boss’s complaints, instead of these newfangled noise canceling earbuds. And you could only get so many an hour instead of waking up to 80 emails on your phone every day. Ugh.
That was the way telecommunications should have stayed.
And the seemingly simple step of charging is so messed up I can’t tell if I’m joking anymore.
This is, however, a conscious choice by manufacturers. Keep that in mind as well.
Memory is always rose-tinted. I remember at that time not only all charging bricks were not compatible with each other, they were also as big as a truck, ran super hot (the "coil-type" transformers) and when it broke down you needed to spend a lot of money to get a replacement from the manufacturer which may or may not be available.

What’s “a lot”? What’s your source for this claim?

Goto deal sites like slickdeals, search for 20W deal threads. Then within the threads, search for 18w. You can find posts claiming to have 18W but bought the 20W anyways.

Also doing a quick search on this forum yields many results. You can even see the person I'm replying to bought it even though already has an 18w. https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...r-20w-charger-apple-store-experience.2264812/

And I have a few friends upgrading their 18w to 20w.

Some very early signs of burn marks on mine after 2 uses, similar to what has been reported with the standalone MagSafe charger. Shame, I actually quite liked it...

Silly question here - but would ANY 20W+ charger work with this and get the speeds etc or does it have to be the Apple one?

I have this - would this get me the max speeds? Not massively bothered about speeds but just interested.

Anker USB C Charger, 60W PIQ 3.0 & GaN Tech Dual Port Charger, PowerPort+ Atom III (2 Ports) Travel Charger with a 45W USB C Port

It's incredible how there are so many willing to defend a product that is undeniably overpriced. The sum of two independent chargers from Apple is about half of what the cost of this product is. There is no reasonable rationalization for this price point whatsoever. You have to be chugging the Apple koolaid to think this is a good product. My GOD there are too many Apple fanboys who are willing to just burn money just to have an Apple logo on something.
Something being overpriced doesn’t not make it a good product. It’s a very convenient product that you won’t find a other that’s as compact and as ideal for travelling or for having something taking up limited space

I received the Duo charger yesterday and am generally happy with it despite the high price. My only suggestion is that Apple should make two versions — swapping the positions of the watch and phone charger — since it is tougher to reach the iPhone side when lying down for those that have their nightstands on the left side of their bed.

Mine arrived this morning and certainly is compact and doesn’t take up much space for the bedside table and for sure will be great when can travel again that’s for sure

very pricey of course but least now I won’t have any issues aligning my phone at night

Most other chargers should work. I used an Anker 20W nano charger with the standard MagSafe charging puck and it actually charged a bit faster than the Apple charger. Note that you’ll need a more powerful charger for the MagSafe Duo to get the maximum 14W charging rate.

Surely 45W would do it?

That makes no sense. Apple decides to release something like MagSafe without a brick to save the environment, but only allows their 20W brick to supply the full power which requirs people that want that to go out and buy another charging brick? The proof is that people aren't wanting to go out and buy another brick, Apple is forcing them to buy it if they want to get the full charge capabilities of their MagSafe charger. Its not a limitation of the 18W charger, its a limitation set by Apple so that ONLY their 20W charger that people will have to go buy will supply the full power to MagSafe. People wouldn't be throwing away their 18W chargers if Apple would just allow those chargers to supply the full power to MagSafe. They don't, and want people to go buy a new brick from them.

How do cords remain consistent over the years if Apple just started changing the cord to lightning to usb-c last year for iPhones? Its not consistent simply because Apple chooses to not make it consistent. Every other year has been lighting to USB-A before the iPhone 11. That to me isn't consistent with anything outside of people needing to buy new charging bricks now if they want to use the cord that comes with their phone.

For the record, I am not one of these people that cares that Apple removed the charger. My only issue is with those that think this was done for environmental reasons. It absolutely was not. Apple can't say "We are not including charging bricks because there are too many of them in the world and we want to do our part for the environment" while at the same time release a entire new ecosystem of charging accessories that require people to buy a new brick for them to work at their full capacity. If Apple was so concerned about the environment I highly doubt they would be releasing an entire new line of chargers encouraging people to replace their old form of charging their phone.

Its ridiculous to think it was done for any other reason that money. And that's fine, but the environment nonsense wears thin on me.

Very stupid and ignorant post. If there was no Steve Job’s there would be no Apple. Clueless kid probably posting.
I’m not sure where you got me saying “no Steve Jobs” from that. Obviously Steve Jobs was a genius, who had many great ideas, and who change the world.
but let’s not pretend that Apple was perfect under him. They still had overpriced products, they still made ridiculous decisions, and they’re very similar today than they were 10 years ago when he was alive.

You can pick the phone up with one hand. There’s a tiny gap between the edge of your phone, and the folding mechanism of the duo, where you can fit your index finger underneath and pick up your phone.

Belkin, Mophie, and Nomad all sell chargers that are near or more expensive than the Apple MagSafe duo!
Yes, but many of them offer some significant benefits. For example, the Nomad Base Station Apple Watch Edition charges an Apple Watch and two other devices. I need a 3-device charger ideally for iPhone + AirPods + Apple Watch, but the Duo still interests me.

I was wanting a Duo until I saw the ridiculous price, at which point I grabbed one of these and it's worked great so far.
Does macrumors.com send all Amazon links through geniuslink.com? I thought maybe it was the original poster, but the URL looks like a normal amazon.com one.

I had the Nomad 3 in 1 charger and having to align my phone and AirPods just perfectly in the charging pad in order for them to charge was super annoying.

I had a suspicion there was a catch to how nice it looked, I’ve been debating one of them to clean up the nightstand but I may just keep looking.😞 Thanks for sparing me the disappointment!

I would be interested in how big the power adaptor is for the new Belkin. I had a Belkin Boost unit and the power adaptor was relatively large.

I purchased the MagSafe Duo and really like it. I am using it with the 20W adapter. I am in an older NYC apartment building with both limited outlets and limited outlet access. That’s why the MagSafe Duo works so well for me.
