Unless...The new Siri Remote is an indication that the new MBP will be thicker, since that would make it harder to lose?

All joking apart - I wouldn't complain. The M1 Air and 13" MBP are now hugely powerful if your priority is portability. Make the even more powerful models big enough so we don't have to quibble over who can have their favourite ports built in and who has to carry hubs & dongles, and with space for a couple of M.2. blades so we don't have to juggle external drives.

...but then I always thought my trusty old 17" MBP was so compact and light to carry back and forth across the pond compared to the old PowerBook G3 and really can't see why these young whipper-snappers are whining about the size and weight of their 2012 MacBook Pros...

I used to get harassed by my co-workers whenever I whipped out my first-generation Mac on my desk in Germany. People saw the GUI and commented on how toy-like it looked. But when they saw how I could turn boring mush into beautiful spreadsheets and bar charts using FileMaker, they were impressed. This particular iMac looks more toy-like than my beige box of the 80s. It seems more like an iPad on a stick. Yes, I know, it's faster than many PCs, but I can't bring myself to like it.

Today is the official launch day of the new M1 iMac, M1 iPad Pro, and second-generation Apple TV 4K. We picked up one of each, and we're starting with a quick hands-on and overview of the iMac.

Our 24-inch iMac is in orange, which is one of the colors that Apple isn't selling in its stores (stores only have stock of blue, green, silver, and pink models). We have the $1,499 model that comes with an M1 chip, 8-core GPU, 256GB of storage, and 16GB RAM.

All of Apple's new iMacs come with matching accessories, so we've got an orange Magic Trackpad, an orange Magic Mouse, and an orange keyboard, not to mention the braided orange cable to go along with it.

Apple also provides unique colored stickers with each model, so we have a set of orange stickers, and when you boot up the iMac, it has a whole orange theme.

In person, the new 24-inch iMac is super light thanks to its thin design, and the white bezels aren't too noticeable in day to day usage, but the chin is large and sticks out quite a bit.

The iMac has four USB-C ports, two of which are Thunderbolt, a 3.5mm headphone jack at the side, and a MagSafe cable and port.

We've already heard a lot about the M1 chip so we'll test out the iMac's performance in a later video, but the new machine does have a new 4.5K Retina display, which looks as good as you might expect. Other standout features include a six-speaker system that has Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos support, and the new webcam, which has an improved sensor and advanced image signal processor enabled by the M1 for better camera quality.

Did you get a new M1 iMac? Let us know what you think in the comments.

With this, you don't need a mirror.

Could those posters complaining about the price please explain?

Price including a high end 24" monitor seems reasonable. Macs will never be "cheap" but this doesn't seem particularly expensive. Entry price is $1300, which for the main target market is likely plenty adequate without further upgrades.

Orange is my favorite color, but I am not in the market for an iMac. That said, I am a bit disappointed that the next time I get into an Apple store that apparently as of now I won't be able to see the Orange iMac. I hope that eventually they do have all of the colors on display at Apple stores around the world.

At first I wasn’t a fan of the color, but looking at higher res photos, I really like it. Blue looks even better. I’d probably only buy silver just because every other aluminum Apple product I have is silver only going with space Gray when necessary to have a black glass front (iPad Pro 10.5 and iPhone 6S Plus)

I used to get the same reaction to my 128k iMac. But aren't you exhibiting the same attitude your co-workers did about your first iMac? Not that appearance doesn't count, but functionality is at least as important because that's what lets you get your work (or play) done. I think the new iMac would look better with an Apple logo on the chin, and I'm not a fan of the orange color in the review, but judging from my experience with an M1 MacBook Air, it looks like an incredible machine for many users. I'm looking forward to the higher end version with a larger screen, more ports, a more powerful processor, and, hopefully, a way to adjust the computer's height.

I've never had a monitor or computer fall over during an earthquake (I'm in California). The iMac's stand seems so narrow side to side. Does anyone who has seen it in person have an opinion on how it would handle some shaking?

I purchased the blue one, 16 gb of RAM and the 500 gb SSD. I am upgrading from the Late 2013 iMac which had the same amount of RAM and a smaller SSD. The 2021 version is considerably faster. Bootup time is about half of what the old one was. App launch time seems instantanous. I haven't had a chance to put the 4.5k screen through its paces yes but what I have watched is definitely better. I also haven't had a chance to run my one Parallels VM yet but that is next up.

Overall it was definitely worth the purchase price and I have no regrets about getting the blue one (well if I couldn't have gotten it in blue I would have gotten it in green).

Nice color but man this iMac looks hideous. The white borders and that huge chin. Looks so 1990’s. Luckily I don’t need a desktop because this is an easy pass.

The best color! I may pick one up but still waiting for my M1 iPad Pro to get here. Trying to do 1 thing at a time. 🤣

The stand/mouse/keyboard/trackpad color seems like the "Gold 2018" used by Apple for iPhone 8, iPad, Apple Watch, iPhone dock, Macbook 12" (2018) and MBA 2018->2021. I can't recognize from photos because everywhere it seems more orange, but I don't believe Apple created a new nuance for one product (also green & blue aluminum seems like iPad Air). In the red/pink the aluminum is from the rose gold used in iPhone 6s/SE/7, Apple Watch 3, iPad Air. The yellow aluminum, similar to the new gold 2020 for Apple Watch/iPhone 12 Pro, but over aluminum, seems like iPhone XR yellow.

guess I'm old school.. .but I find the "colors" to be very hard to look at...and would never consider anything but silver/gray for a desktop computer

I agree..... it's extremely gimmicky. While I do find some of the back colors pretty neat I seriously would question having something like that once the novelty wears off.

It's a simple litmus test.....practically every TV, monitor..etc all have similar color schemes which is usually some variation of black or gray for practical reasons. I haven't seen too many OLEDs in orange yet but it's 2021 so who knows what the new norm is especially if Apple started selling them.

The fact that Apple is holding back standard color schemes for this model says something. I'm quite certain they are saving the space gray for the larger iMac Pro version. I would also guess space gray will end up in this 24" line at some point.

It may perform well.
good to hear there is a 1080 web cam after all these years of 720.
But it looks like a 24" iPad mounted to a stand and not an iMac.
with that said I feel a touch sensitive screen is not too far off in the future.
and more iPadOS features in the macOS.
