The number of color / ram / ssd sizes generates a ton of SKUs for the stores to carry. Gonna be a lot of BTO for people to get what they want. Surprised Apple is allowing this much complexity for the retail channel to handle.

Stand, $20
Chin $200
Power adaptor $50
Keyboard $40
Monitor $300

cost of manufacturing the iMac, less than $800 for sure. Now add on profit margin snd multiple upgrades to make it worth getting and you have quite the profitable system for Apple.
if they sold it for closer to what it’s worth it would be a terrific system to own. But if your not buying it used, the apple tax is strong with this one.

I work for Apple, and I do not know the behind the scenes. But these Mac's colores are a homage to the original Imac colores, which were an homage of Olivetti Typewriters where the idea sprung from(as well as the design of our stores was copied from Olivetti:

Faster than a years old 21” iMac means little. It’s not faster than apples entry level MacBooks or mini. Id take a MacBook over it. But I already have monitors, better kbs. Mouse (who uses a Magic Mouse).

For the average person a MacBook is still a strong consideration with this iMac only really boasting an decent 24” monitor. 300 gets you a 4K 27”‘from dell. Guess it depends on person. Colors don’t do anything for me. Kids laughed and said no. Laptop please. Wife said no. Laptop only.

Does it support spatial audio when used with Airpods Pro/Max? I'm thinking no, but just checking..

Could those posters complaining about the price please explain?

Price including a high end 24" monitor seems reasonable. Macs will never be "cheap" but this doesn't seem particularly expensive. Entry price is $1300, which for the main target market is likely plenty adequate without further upgrades.

If you ask smart or more tech savvy consumers they'd go with something like this instead for $550 with money left over for a separate 48" LG CX OLED TV as monitor that you don't have to throw out with all-in-one. You also don't have to give up existing software compatibility, repurchase software licenses or deal with a 24" which is on the small side (mine is 40" and moving to 48" soon).

Thanks for sharing! Have never seen that. Looks like present day store but selling type writers. Only know limited history of Olivetti back to 1983 M24 PC that was also sold as relabeled AT&T 6300.

Got my iMac in blue and O.M.G. Huge upgrade, love love love. And yes, the white border is absolutely beautiful and clean.
Actually I hated the white bezels when I first saw this at the unveil, but now that I've got this in my home for almost 24 hours, I love it. It just blends so well into the home environment, which makes the iMac more grounded at home, and a joy to use. It's hard to describe the psychology, but I feel like looking at this screen has a calming effect on me.

I've got the blue too, and it's so beautiful. I had a look at all the colours in store, and think blue was the best. The chin is more subtle on the blue than say the orange. I actually disagree with Dan on having that darker orange on the front. Having that slight gradient from the light grey bezels to the pastel colour makes it fade from focus. If you have a dark colour, it'll pull your focus from that incredible screen.

I think it is beautiful, but ultimately a very limited market because of price. It reminds me of this quote from some dude back in 1998:

Apple has forgotten not all its friends are Oprah.
Considering how much longer an iMac can remain functional and useful for an average user, the iMac is certainly affordable.

This is a very astute point.

The 13" MB{A,P} lines use the same basic processor & GPU.

So all you get from this, is a screen thats 2.7x the size while maintaining PPI, two additional USB-C ports, and an Ethernet port.

It's almost like the differentiator between entry model laptops and entry model desktops is that one is very portable and the other has a bigger screen and more ports.. WHAT A ****ING SURPRISE THAT IS.

Yep and it also gets you a PPI of 163. I guess if you don't care about picture quality, maybe that works fine for you.

Oh this should be good.

with money left over for a separate 48" LG CX OLED TV as monitor
Wut? I've worked in the tech industry for pretty close to 20 years. In that time I've known one person who actually bought a TV to "use as a display", and he didn't actually use it as a display. He bought it to use as a TV, and claimed it as a tax deduction "for work", because technically he could plug his computer into it and use it as a display.

In a similar way, you can turn a couch on end and climb up it. That doesn't make it a step ladder.

So what resolution is that display? For 40" you'd want 8K UHD or WHUXGA (~7680 x 4320 or 4800, depending on whether it's 16:9 or 16:10). For 48".. wow.. that'd have to be.. ~9200 by ~5700 or so...

Oh. It's a 4K panel. At 48"... so, 91PPI..... Thats um.... Good for you, I guess?

Why is the chin a different shade of orange to the stand? How did such a clash of colours get the go ahead??
The entire screen and chin is covered by a single pane of glass. Light hits glass and metal differently, so even if they're technically the same colour, they'll look different in almost every lighting situation.

I have to say, I was very skeptical about the off-white bezel and pastel chin, but after using it for a day, when you're looking at the screen, the borders kind of fade in to the background in a way a black-bezeled monitor doesn't. Its a strange effect to describe.

I like how he filmed this with natural light. All the reviews are using bright studio lights which only exaggerates the white bezel. In a natural setting it doesn't look that bad, and that is where people will actually be using it. One thing that was incorrect was how he said the display isn't as sharp. All retina Macs are equally sharp because they all have the same PPI. The 5K and 6K only have more real estate, not a denser ppi.
