When oh when are they going to make a serious effort to close the technology lag against Android? Still a crappy single speaker beside the antiquated lightning port? Really? I swear I'm not an Android fanboy, I switch back n forth between a Pixel 3 and 11 Pro a few times a week (ADD I know), if for no other reason than to give my neck a workout by shaking it from side to side in disappointment at everything iOS lacks. Been running 14 for a couple of weeks and its updates really only caught up to Android circa 2015 or so... That said I love the look/form factor of the 5.4" but of course they'll dumb it down with an inferior camera array just because it's the low phone on the totem pole, and because they are Apple.

The 6.7 looks like it will be a nice phone especially if it is available in the New Green color.
I have a 7” one. It’s called an iPad mini 😏

Any ideas at all what screen resolutions to expect? And will there be a cheap(ish) model like the iPhone XR?

Should be interesting to see how well the 5.4" model sells. After all, I've been told for years that "nobody wants small phones".

Buy another android?

Why do people hate the lightning port?

It's a much more solid feeling connection than USB C which wiggles around, at least on my MacBook Pro. Maybe that's apple's fault. It's also a smaller connector, and it can't get dust or sand or junk stuck in it like usb-c could if it always wound up on the passenger side floor of my car like the lightning connector does.

I hope they keep the lighting port. I like it.

Still complaining about updates that came late in 2015? It's 2020 now lol. Who cares.

My iPhone 7 has two speakers, the earpiece functions as one as well when needed. Do the new iPhones really only have one speaker?

What really is iOS lacking these days beside the visual tweakability stuff only android fanboys care about?

So you have, and use, Android, which you like, but you keep switching back to iPhones, a couple times a week, just so you can feel pain and complain about it?

Huh.

I don't hate Lightning, but I'd prefer USB-C as it's the only prospect I have for using a single connector for all of the kit I carry. I'm phasing out microUSB (i.e. refuse to buy any device that uses it), and I'd like to do the same with Lightning. Not that I expect Apple to ever use USB-C in the iPhone: they get money from people who make Lightning peripherals and owning such accessories is a barrier to switching, so they have 2 commercial incentives to stick with it.

All 4 USB-C ports on my 2 year old MBP are completely solid, with both the first-party cable, third-party cables and third party accessories (doc, flash drive, C-to-A adapters), so my experience there is different from yours. My Pixel 2 phone is a different story, but I think that's Google cutting corners: my wife's ancient HTC 10's USB-C is completely solid with any cable, so it's clearly possible to build it properly if you choose to.

But I don't use car charging cables, so I guess I don't have that specific concern ;)

Tweakability adds to usability too. Who wants to fill a screen with icons from the top when you need to use a second hand to reach them? Forcing people to fill screens from the top is bad ergonomics (and sticking rarely-used apps up there is just unwelcome clutter), and I'm constantly amazed that Apple don't get this.

To me iOS 14 is an improvement because I can stick widgets up top (information displays which I'm more likely to want to look at than interact with) and keep some apps or folders at the bottom. But I'd still prefer to be able to leave gaps to produce a cleaner interface if I want. There's no logical argument against UI flexibility, since if you like the 1990s PDA look there's nothing stops you from setting up that way - talk of "fanboys" is just a way to dismiss a point rather than engage with it.

Well you make a decent point about not being able to arrange apps from the bottom of the screen. I guess it’s not an issue to me with my long fingers on an iPhone 7 because I can reach everything with one hand.

But that’s just one thing. Most of the customization stuff android guys love I’d trade any day for iPhone stability and consistency.

I don’t like big phones for the same reason you don’t like the iOS homepage layout. I want to be able to reach everything with my thumb, regardless of where it is on the screen.
For example take a swipe down from the top gesture - there’s no way to move that to the bottom of the screen. Well, actually Apple has a nice solution for that on the Touch ID phones - double tap home button to move everything within reach. Do the Face ID phones still have that feature?

Great question. I love my iPad, but there's a few things I'm waiting for Apple to "innovate" from Android before I switch to an iPhone:
  • Decent audio. I'm mostly wireless these days. Most Android phones support LDAC at 990kbps, which I can't distinguish from a wired connection. Dumbing down to 250kbps AAC (which is the best any iPhone or even Macbook seems able to support) is noticeably worse.
  • A dedicated back button on the bottom row. Simplifies one-handed usage, and saves you from hunting for it in Every. Single. App.
  • Always-on display. Knowing the time and whether you have any alerts at a glance shouldn't require an overpriced watch.
  • A hierarchical filesystem you can mount as a drive, rather than having data siloed into each individual app.
  • The ability to select default apps.

They do but it’s harder to activate than a double tap on the home button.

1) Do not care about audio so can not judge or comment on that.

2) Joke of the day. You have such option when you switch Apps but can not expect Apple will do this. I saw many weird situation ppl used it several times instead simply going back to home screen in one step. or just get lost. It has it advantages but issues as well. We well literate users can hardly judge this. Illiterate users can mess or get lost in any system regardless how idiot proof is.

3) Not sure why they do not support it. They usually have reason. OLED issues, battery life or just wait for more phones will be capable of it. You can wear any watch, no need to buy Apple watch. Can not understand how this can be switching like issue.

4) Someone more informed should react but I believe iOS 13 has all that. But not many apps support access to Files/iCloud drive. And if you mean using iPhone as external drive. Lol I have to laugh again. I am nearly sure you can leave Apple as it is no way for them.

5) Partially solved in iOS 14. But After experience with third party keyboards they are all deleted now so I do not hurry to change system apps.

upd: some typos

It would be nice to see some actual hands on on reachability, one hand operation of the 5.4”, etc... I’m exactly the same as I was before seeing the video...

Is it just me or does that charging port look like USB-C? If so, I'm buying.
USB C is inferior to Lightning. Lightning is the world's best standard because it's exclusive to Apple, unlike trashy Android devices that use other ports.
Lightning should be valued and other people (i.e. Android users) should look up to lightning because it's from Apple.

I went from XS Max to the smaller 11 Pro, and I haven’t looked back! For daily use I feel the smaller form factor is much more practical. Really excited myself for the 5.4”, but reluctant to lose the Pro features.
Anything less than the Pro Max (6.5") is simply too small for movies and content consumption. I dont get why people are so obsessed with going backwards in time and are craving for tiny screens that people have to squint to use. Portability and size is not an excuse, people should just get used to carrying a superior large iPhone around.
