Samsungs doing all the R&D and heavy lifting. In a few years when Apple releases their own folding phone, they'll take all credit and Macrumors will actually give them all the credit.

Happens all the time.
How exactly are you imagining this? By the way you worded it, it sounds like Apple will take a Galaxy Fold and slap an Apple logo on it lol

every company does it's own hinge/folding design, Samsung isn't doing any heavy lifting besides helping Apple see if the market for foldable is worth it or not.

That crease and the susceptibility to scratching are simply untenable. Since the 12 with its Ceramic Shield I have not needed a screen protector to make my phone even heavier and I love it. No micro scratches. Some day this tech will be worth something, but it sure as hell isn't worth as much as an iPhone and iPad Pro COMBINED.

As a geek, I think the tech is very cool and I enjoy watching it develop. From a technology standpoint what Samsung is doing is very impressive. But in all practicality I just can’t come up with a scenario where I would prefer this to the current iPhone form factor.

I just don’t see what’s the killer app for foldables that will make them go mainstream.

once the kinks are worked out and it runs iOS / iPadOS I might jump on board. having a phone that also can function as an iPad min seems very tempting.

Like when Apple removed the headphone jack and Samsung copied them even though they mocked them about doing it... or when Apple stopped including the charging brick and then Samsung copied them even though they mocked them about it!

At the end of the day, everyone has a different kinds of tolerances. Some people will always be bugged by the crease the same way I'm sure some people are still bugged by the notch. I got used to the crease same way I got used to the notch to the point of where sometimes I don't even feel it, let alone see it. At the same time, there's a needlepoint-sized ding on the back part of the bottom case of my M2 MacBook Air that somehow happened and that still weighs heavily on my mind (even though I never see it).

Personally, I don't see this going mainstream as not everyone needs a larger screen when out and about in general, but I do see how some people find it very useful. Some use it unfolded 90% of the time. When I had a Fold, I would find the bigger screen helpful for when I am walking around the office or our company had lunches and stuff and I had to help troubleshoot by remoting into my machine. I wasn't going to bring a whole MacBook/iPad out. Ultimately, with the MacBook Air purchase, the Apple ecosystem was worth more than the screen to me.

Essentially is no different than the Fold 3. Look no further than for the Chinese OEMs to be leading this front sadly. Playing way too safe. The aspect ratio is still unusable especially the cover display i.e Oppo Find N is better. The under display camera tech is still visible i.e zte axon 40 is better. And then the crease still a thing i.e the (edited at least Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 trying to at least work on it better) All leading the front. And they are on their 4th gen Samsung. Sad. Wish every plus side of these devices added into one monster one.

Samsung is slowly perfecting what I believe to be a useful technology. A device that folds into a smaller form factor when put away makes it more portable and therefore more useful--it's not just a gimmick. Granted, when folded both of these devices are thick and would bulge out of your pocket a bit more, but give it a few more generations.

Hey, don’t get your hinge in a pinch.

MR would never play faves like that. 😂

And exactly why would Apple put money into R&D on a feature they have no interest in right now? I know I’d let the company supplying my displays (that I’m already paying for) do the dirty work if that’s what floats their boat.
