Samsungs doing all the R&D and heavy lifting. In a few years when Apple releases their own folding phone, they'll take all credit and Macrumors will actually give them all the credit.

Happens all the time.

Right? A good buddy has one of these and I thought it was a really cool device. Sure, you can see the fold, but more than a notch :)... it disappears after a few minutes of usage.

My bigger issue is how chonky it is when folded. But it's still amazing you can fit that much screen real estate in a pocket.

I really like the Oppo Find N because in its folded state it's about the size of an iPhone 13 Mini whereas in its unfolded state the screen area is functionally bigger than almost every smartphone currently being sold, verging on iPad Mini territory.

Samsung's Fold is so big in both states that I think many people are underestimating how pleasant it must be to have a smaller Fold style phone. I think this could be Apple's approach to a folding phone (at least one size of it): Something that's about the size of an iPhone Mini when folded to give you the Steve Jobs vision of a phone you can use with one hand but when you unfold it you get something more suitable for modern media consumption and multi app productivity.

I'm still baffled by the comparisons to 3D TVs and other such gimmicks. I guess people must really hate tablets because I can't for the life of me figure out why someone wouldn't want both a mini tablet for media and a one hand capable phone in the same physical device in their freaking pocket.

This makes no sense to me as a phone. Maybe as a tablet if executed extremely well. Every time foldable smartphones come up, I try to imagine carrying around an iPhone that's half the size in one dimension, at least twice as thick, and that you have to twist around to see/use to its fullest extent. Phone technology would have to get a ton better before I'd consider such a device. Twice as thick, more moving parts to break. I didn't like the original flip phones and don't care much for flip phones part deux either.

These will never be a possibility for me until they can find a way to get rid of that visual crease in the middle of the screen. Even if I'm not a fan of these, at least there are companies like Samsung trying to push the envelope.
I was just thinking: what’s cool is Apple won’t dabble with mass-producing a folding phone until they can perfect it and make it seamless.

Thank God we have an Apple in the world or we’d be swimming in a techno-sea of perpetual hyped-up mediocrity, with good designs sidelined into niche markets where they burn and die.

I would buy a Flip. The main two reasons I don't get the Samsung is because it's Android and secondly the folding mechanism I do not like. It needs to be something like the Mototrola Razr to reduce the crease and protect the screen.

Foldables: The modern equivalent of 3D TV's.
I almost forgot about these. When my parents upgraded from big Tube Sony TV's to Sony flatscreens in 2011 the ones they bought had 3D!! My brother and I played call of duty black ops zombies in 3D a total of two times before agreeing it made us kinda sick. What a cheap gimmeck 🤣

LOL Listen I’m an Apple fan and am in the ecosystem, but you and others make it seem like only Apple has the drive and ability to make a seam-less folding display. If Samsung and others don’t put in the R&D in increments, then Apple wouldn’t ever make a folding phone. Apple is great at optimizing and timing the market, but it’s not like they are the actual brains figuring out every little detail.

Apple is already dabbling with folding tech. I’m sure they are working on UI elements, figuring out how to reconfigure hardware in a device for a thinner body, etc. The tech for a display isn’t there yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple was the first to release a seam-less folding phone just because they can pay top dollar for exclusivity when the tech is there and people will say “Samsung and LG couldn’t do it first” even if the displays are coming from them.

The point is to have a mini tablet in your pocket.

To argue the use case of this is weird to me. Folded = phone. Open = tablet. Simple.
Maybe I'm looking at it wrong? These look an awful lot like phone sizes that fold down into half phone size and 2x the thickness.

Happens all the time.

Wouldn't be shocked at all if Apple's R&D group already has a dozen or two working prototype foldable phones in their labs, going back a few years.

And for a variety of reasons, Apple has decided to not go forward with a foldable phone product.

Happens all the time.

Foldable are brilliant. Having owned a fold the concept is amazing! Can’t wait for the day Apple does the equivalent… that’s what stopped me. Too caught up in the ecosystem. Those who say they’re pointless.. give it a chance first, if you like iPads you will love the form factor!
I am curious how many situations there are where someone needs a small device that folds out to something bigger. I have a 12.9” iPad so a foldable phone would never replace it.

So a mediocre phone and a mediocre tablet. Seems to me this is more about tech geeks bored with smartphones now and looking for anything that might be different.

Guess iPhone 24 will be a flip phone.

Think Apple could learn a bit here also look at the new Motorola. Apple is so behind Oh wait we might get a power percentage !!!!
By that time folding screens will be a thing of the past. Samsung and Apple will have moved on by then.

lol imagine samsung is american
sure nationalists youngers girls would have praised this cute flip
what do you expect with blingbling for girls and 30s and under
still crease but is enough with galaxy ecosystem and display cuz fashion phone

The first few iterations of samsung's foldable phone were half baked.

When apple releases one, it won't be - that's what apple gets credit for.
