Hands-On With the New iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max

Unfortunately, if one wants to stay at the same size of device, the 11 Pro is the logical choice. I have a 7, i find it already almost too big. The 11 Pro is the smallest iPhone right now, and I’ll have to spend that much more than the 11 just for that privilege.
That's a good point.

Please be honest and let us know if those who bought one feel it is true value for the money spent.

Well sure it is.

We got a 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.

Yes it's a chunk of money to buy - but we use them almost every day. :). Oh wait - we use them almost every hour of the day.

What is it worth to have the latest? I mean, it is a choice. It is not quite an essential item, but wait - maybe it is actually.

Try going without ANY iPhone - whether it's an iPhone 6 or 8 or whatever - when is the last time you had a whole day without it? How about a week? Try that out and tell me whether an iPhone is essential or not.

For sure all the iPhone's have been great - but this argument of "true value" is fairly easy for me to answer.

Is it worth a dollar or 2 dollars or 3 dollars per day to have the latest iPhone 11 Pro vs an iPhone 8?

It costs the same for me to have the cellular plan, so that is the baseline cost of having any iPhone. For me it is about $1200 per year for cell phone service with big data and unlimited North America calling and texts.

So if I REALLY want to save - I could cancel the cellular plan and save $1200. But I can't imagine doing that.

I could get an iPod or iPad and just use wifi connections. That would be the "smartest" way to save $1200.

So I spend $1200 for the cellular plan and then add $2000.00 for the iPhone 11 Pro Max in Canada.

My old iPhone is the iPhone XS Max - what is it worth on the used market in Canada - Unlocked? $1000 probably today.

Now look at an iPhone 8 - I think the cellular company will give me that for free if I sign for a 3 year contract.

What Ever.

It is a no brainer and it appears to cost me $1000 extra (Canadian $) per year to have the latest. $3.00 per day.

Worth it? Should I save the $3.00 per day and do something with that money?

It's just a choice and an opinion and it's been beaten up every year for many years.

You choose.

It's only 4x if you're counting the new 3rd lens (wide lens) as the starting point but it's just 2x from the normal lens that the X and XS use. Apple usually compares all new features and improvements to their previous phone model but in this case, they are not doing that so it feels a little deceptive.

It’s not deceptive. How else would you specify it?

Every camera that is marketed with a zoom range (that is, a __x zoom instead of a 35-105mm zoom) is calculated by taking the highest focal length divided by the narrowest.

I’m guessing you didn’t buy one. If you did, you knew the specs and features well ahead of time. Can’t folks get therapists to vent their resentments on here? The grandstanding is tiresome. And where are these phones produced by all these innovative “competitors”? Ever tried navigating a clumsy Android phone? If you prefer exploding Samsungs or arcane manufacturers with folding keyboards, then why are you posting on an Apple-based forum?

This. The tech is insane. 12 years ago we had blackberries and now we are MAD that the phone can’t make us fly and see through walls. If it’s that horribly bad, just don’t buy it.

I honestly have no idea why every Apple site seems filled with Android users who love bashing Apple. I am not saying they have to like Apple, but I just don't get why they care enough to waste their time on here. It wouldn't be so bad if they seemed to know what they're talking about, but for the most part they don't seem to really understand the products they're ranting about (it's so tedious reading comments about Face ID by people who've clearly never used it for example) and most of their comments sound the same.
Yeah it’s almost like they get paid or something...

That's only the cost of a cup of coffee per day.

This is one of the most tired ‘for’ arguments.

Or you can NOT spend that cost of coffee per day and put it towards
-retirement
-shares
-annual holiday
-budget to fix or improve your home
-emergency fund
-send that money to Africa and feed poor children (because that’s the argument that industry uses, but the vast majority ain’t interested, but why, it’s only the cost of coffee?)
- next years iPhone
-other subscription services (same argument as above)
-other things

The point I’m trying to make, the cost of coffee arguement is rubbish, because there are other ways to redirect your money without having the latest and greatest. I’m a medical doctor, so I have the money, the question put forward is the value of upgrading. Some posters in this thread reasonably justify it, some give a balanced opinion.

Apple WANTS YOU to just see it as a cost of coffee. They are, amongst so many other industries, trying to hoodwink you into believing it’s not something you will notice on a daily basis. Problem is, when you spend small amounts every day, it all adds up and you start blowing your cash on unnecessary things. Argue all you want, the latest and greatest iPhone is not a necessity, but a want.

For the record, I’m still on the fence to upgrade, but the cost of coffee argument just irks me.

EDIT: ironically enough, people who see it as a cost of coffee per day are the types who most likely still purchase at least a coffee per day, rather than having the discipline to replace it.

Exactly! I dread the thought of having to upgrade from my 7 to the 11 Pro to keep the smaller size.
The 11S Pro next year is rumored to be downsizing to 5.4”, which would make it slightly less wide and tall than the 6/7/8. But thicker/heavier to be sure. It’ll still be $999+ though. Maybe the “SE2” rumored for next March will be an option to get a less expensive, smaller phone.

My biggest complaint about the 11 red is I don’t want to put a case on it but my brain makes me do it anyways.

Be brave. I've had a iPhone 5s, 6s, 7 Plus and now a X for the last 2 years (and it's sooooooo slippery!!). No case. I admit for a short time I chickened out on the X as it would slide off of any surface. That and learning the back glass was close to $600 to replace, but I just can't stand how bulky/heavy/ugly it makes such a beautiful thing and just be very careful now.

My friends think I'm crazy but I take care of my stuff. This is why I would love to see a titanium back instead of glass and more durable front glass. Just in case. Not sure if glass is needed for wireless charging but that's not an important feature and only saves me 2 seconds a night, at best.

Ps I used to have a Nokia phone (Microsoft) with Gorilla Glass 3 that was literally indestructible! That one I wasn't worried about so it was dropped on concrete/pavement/tile a thousand times by me, then my young son when I handed it down. I still have that beast. Lol

I appreciated the 'real world' Slofie. It made me realize how cringworthy that "feature" really is. Something that I will never ever do for any reason, for fear of seeing something like Dan's. Lol. No offense Dan. 😜

I wish we could get those colors on the Pro models. 😩 That would just be too much to resist. And no, I don't use a case so yes I would see it. Those colors look so amazing! Never understood why I can't get them on the more expensive phone. I bet there are people who buy the cheaper phone just for a certain color, that otherwise would have bought the higher end phone if it came in those colors.

Heck, I feel I should have even more choices than them, personally.

My coffee costs $0.60 a cup/day. If you plan on having someone else make it for you then I thank you for supporting the economy.

The cost of most components have come down over the years, Apple is offsetting the tariffs by keeping the prices the same and one it’s lifted the prices will stay the same.

I suspect the iPhone 11 price was supposed to be the XR starting price but Apple underestimated the market on the price point and taken corrective measures by offering higher trade-in offers and other promos. I believe the 11 will sell well but if it didn’t we would have seen more promos and possibly another price cut in 2020.

I like the colours, but the OLED screen just does not do it for me compared to LCD, maybe higher refresh rate. I hope we see microLED soon, it’s a shame really, imagine an AOD for iPhone.

11 is actually hot pink compared to red in previous models so more reason to flash it naked. You can see the difference here between hot pink 11 and red Xr.

https://www.apple.com/product-red/

iPhone XR has a lipstick red, while 11 has diffused look to it in those marketing pictures.

If not mistaken does not “slo-fies” only activate in landscape mode vice portrait mode. I think it‘s gimmicky to add to a feature spec sheet, but whatever floats a selfie addicts boat.

I have had slim cases on all my iPhone’s Including my XS, dropped it on the ground from pocket height and it has been fine, no damage.

Apple has exclusive rights to Liquid Metal that permits RF signals to pass through workout hindrance. I would love to see Apple finally use this on iPhone 2020 with AOD micro LED display, even of they call it Pro and increase the price it would reassure long time users, investors and shareholders that Apple still has that innovative edge, similar to when they released the Retina Display, TouchID and FaceID.

I can not believe a Pro model starts out at only 64 gigs. Yet the 11 starts out at 128 gigs. Come on Apple! Ridiculous.

The iPad Pro first gen came with 32 gb storage as the base model. It didn’t stop me from opting for the 128 gb model.

Shocker, I know.

Wow, liquid metal sounds like some Terminator 2 awesomeness. Lol. Those all would be an incredible upgrade I would line up for day 1. I agree it would reestablish even more confidence in their innovation leadership role.

I wouldn’t call not moving forward with a feature in a prototype “removing features”...
They did remove 3D Touch.

The negative commenters, Freud would have had a field day. Projection, self loathing, feelings of inadequacy.

Indeed, if you don’t like the new iPhones, no problem, just don’t pay attention to them and don’t read Macrumors!
Except that some of us have older phones and would LIKE to upgrade, but Apple isn’t making it easy.

I am in the iPhone upgrade program. I stopped by the Apple store today to look at the new phones. The colors of the 11 look more "pastel" than they do online. I found that I liked the glossy glass on the back of the iPhone 11 more than the matte on the pro. However, I like the stainless steel frame better than the aluminum. In the end, I decided to save $15 a month compared to the fee for my XS and go for a red iPhone 11 64GB.
