Pulling the mouse down opens the dock but doesn't take me to the home screen
I don’t want to download the beta so soon so a can’t test it, but if I’m on an iPad normally with a mouse connected to it, you can show the Home Screen by going to the bottom of the screen and continuing after the dock comes up. If that’s not working now, then It’s probably a bug with Universal Control.

Game changing if this works especially with having an iMac and MacBook. Sidecar and the current displaying settings are terrible with scaling different devices so I rarely use those functions.
Game changing? I have been doing this for around 10 years between three macs using Teleport. How will the game change now?

It works, when it works. Right now if I turn my iPad off...well, just put it to sleep by clicking the power button...and then turn the iPad back on it doesn't work right away. Can't get it to work at all sometimes, then just magically, it will be working again.

This is on an M1 Mac Mini and an iPad Pro 12.1" (the version right before the M1 iPads)

Not with an iPad you haven’t. So.. even if not for you, actually pretty game changing for those that use iPads and macs together.

What do you guys think. Is this boosting the iPad productivity? Or is it more like a gimmick.

When Sidecar launched I thought i will use it a lot, but nowadays never use it.

How does it work? Does it require U1 chips or something? I think the competition won't be able to copy this one before a long time.

Universal Control looks promising. I have used handoff to copy and paste from iPad to MBA, but this would make the process seamless, since my hands would never need to leave the keyboard/trackpad of my MBA. In some ways, it increases the utility of an iPad as a complementary device to the Mac. And, you don’t need to make that big of an investment to get this extra capability because it will work with the base iPad and entry level Macs.

It is this type of seamless integration of hardware and software across devices that keeps me in the Apple ecosystem. Of course, I won’t really know for sure how useful it is until I can try it out for myself.

Told myself I'm off the beta train, but I gotta try Universal Control out. How useful are people finding it for those who've installed it so far?

I have a question regarding universal control. Right now I have my work mac and personal mac connected to 1 monitor at home.

My work mac is using HDMI while my personal mac is using USB-C. My question is, suppose I move my mouse from work mac to personal mac, will the display output also follow? Meaning, will my monitor automatically switch to output from my personal mac?

If not, are there any solutions out there that allow me to do this seamlessly?

No,
Either 2 separate smaller monitors, or maybe 1 monitor supporting scaleable Picture in Picture (so displaying 2 inputs at once) would work for you though.

this is as high as you can go

edit - having problems with scrolling with mx master 3, have tried restarting both. scrolls on my Mac even if cursor is on iPad, and can't drag scroll with mouse - anyone found a fix?
Same issue here. Came here to see if anyone figure it out yet.

While I think this feature is promising, if you occasionally just need some extra screen real estate, you can buy a standard 21.5 inch 1080p monitor from a big box store for about $125. This will give you a lot more room to work than any iPad screen.

Not really in the same league though. All the quality comparisons aside, the iPad is also a high end graphics tablet.

Well, if you are controlling the iPad with your Mac's keyboard and trackpad, you really aren't using the iPad as a tablet are you?

Anyway, I will have to try it out after public release to get a feel for the advantages and disadvantages compared to simply using my MBA with an external monitor as a second screen.

Yes. Of course I am. In Photoshop I have a viewer window on my iPad screen, and I flit between that for closeup work or my main screens when necessary. If the work is detailed I use the pencil - like a graphics tablet, if that’s not necessary I use my mouse.

Universal Control will extend this ability without needing to switch BT inputs on my keyboard and mouse when I want to use the iPad for an iPad feature in the workflow.

Dammit, that's exactly how I was hoping to use it, MacBook in clamshell using AirPlay to the iMac with the iMacs input. Of course, that wouldn't be entirely necessary if Apple would just make AirPlay scaling work properly. Or let us use the iMac as a monitor without signing in! God I miss Target Display Mode. That's all I need, to be able to bring my MacBook into the office and use one of the hotdesk iMacs as an external monitor. But yes Apple, I get it, you want us to do everything through iCloud so you can try generate yet more income...
Beta 2 update to this: I installed beta 2 on my Mac Mini and MBP and this configuration started working! Pretty sure this is a beta 2 thing and didn’t work at all in the initial beta as I tried a couple times.

Anyone ever figure out a solution for the shift key problem? I am using a Logitech MX Keys keyboard with universal control and can't seem to use the shift key on my iPad Pro 12.9...

I think the devices just need to be signed-in to the same iCloud account. This validates they belong to the same user and are reasonably entitled to access one another’s files, control, etc. I suspect (but haven’t installed to check) that files can be located locally, in iCloud, or in some other accessible location.

connecting two different apple devices already works WITHOUT necessity of being connecteted to the same (activated) iCloud.

since a long time you had to accept and confirm connecting the iPad or iPhone with a MBP or iMac to even store backups of iPad and iPhones locally on the MBP…

As the member you answered to for me UC would be useless if forced to load up my data to iCloud…
I don’t trust Clouds of whatever Party since there were too much bad things happening and I am one of the people not being naive enough to give whatever private data are to cloud data storing of third parties…

so - iCloud storing of my data as an Obligation to use UC is a definitely NO-GO for me and would be very disappointing for me.

conformation of cinnecting both as dinecsince many years for backups in iTune and/or just registration of both apple devices with the same apple-ID would be acceptable for me. But storing data in iCloud is definitely a No-Go for me. I will never ever store all my personal data somewhere whatever Organisation, enterprise or country will be that 3rd party.
