While it doesn't (for now at least) allow above, you can go below...
Maybe they don't want above as it would be a bit weird with the menu bar..?
this is as high as you can go

edit - having problems with scrolling with mx master 3, have tried restarting both. scrolls on my Mac even if cursor is on iPad, and can't drag scroll with mouse - anyone found a fix?

Too bad it doesn’t work with 2 iPads. I’ve pretty much ditched my MacBook, and it would be nice to use my mini as a second monitor for my IPP.

It just works!

BUT:
1. Scrolling from MX Master 3 mouse works only on the device that is connected (not on the extended one)
2. Shift Key doesn't activate.

Anyone have the same issues?
Having both of those issues! The Shift key does not work on my Apple Keyboard nor on the Logitech.

I’m so excited for this. It’s perfect for my workflow, I already use Universal clipboard, Airdrop and Sidecar extensively. I have logitec keyboard and mouse with multiple BT ability to switch between ipad and Mac, works well but its very clunky. This will be cool.

What happens if i’m using Sidecar, can I get the mouse to activate iPadOS in some way? I think I saw someone mention something about continuing the mouse movement to the far side of the ipad screen to reveal iPadOS, but I can’t find the comment now.

You did see that this is in the current beta releases.. right?
Nope. Lol. My bad. All I heard was Dan say “it was finally here”. When he mentioned the multitasking issues I remembered how it took Apple three OS releases to fix multi display full screen in max os.

Does copy and paste work between devices?
Copy and paste has been working between macs and between macs and iPhones for quite a while now.
I've found it very handy, which gives me high expectations for the extended functionality of Universal Control.
The only time copy and paste between devices has been not quite so seamless is when copy and paste of formatted text turns into the name of a local file containing the formatted text that I then have to open and extract manually.

How is this useful? The one thing it eliminates is the problem of transferring data, or photos, or files from one device to another. This happens on occassion, there isn't much I do on my ipad, as it is a consuming device, read internet, play games, watch videos. I rarely create anything with it. Each device has different purposes, so I can't say this is a game changer of any means. But it is a software solution for lots of peripheral devices use, no need to USB sticks, Transfer cables, etc.

I'll tell you how.

I use 3 devices for my work. An m1 Macbook pro, an iMac Pro and a iPad Air 4. Right now, when the iMac pro is computing some really expensive lightmaping for my games or a big build process, I switch to my M1 Pro to do some work. I constantly have to switch betweem my keyboard and M1 Pro, moving them back and forth. I use my iPad Air 4 as a bonus screen to keep slack/discord on it or my task lists, etc.

With Universal control I can just use my M1 Macbook pro as a control device for my iMac Pro and iPad without needing sidecar and without having to move my hands or re-arange my desk. I can ditch the ipad keyboard now too and instead get a better stand.

Cleans up the desk and there's no need to switch between crap and move / push them along or use multiple mice/keyboards.

Synergy existed but it's not 100% compatible and seamless.

It's like using two monitors but instead of the entire computer getting clogged up on really complex tasks and freezing both monitors, it just keeps the resources busy on one of them.

It's an amazing productivity tool and I'm extremely happy it's here. Finally. Can't wait for it to get out beta so I can ditch synergy.

Apple: Please make some new more mainstream 1st party monitors (way less than XDR)

The lengths they are going to here -- to seemingly avoid (partially at least) doing that one thing that so many would love

(this tech has alternative uses, but it's a somewhat parallel issue)

Please - nobody waste their time telling me the differences (I'm fully aware of what this is, how it works and how it's different than multiple monitors connected to a Mac)

I'm pretty sure it works with anything that can be used as a mouse or keyboard on either Mac or iPad. I've tried a third party BT keyboard connected to either iPad or Mac and both times it also worked with the device it wasn't connected with. Same with a Logitech mouse. That said, multitouch gestures like expose or mission control don't seem to transfer, not even from a iPad magic keyboard to the Mac. Scroll or pinch/zoom does work though.
I have a MX Master and when I go over to my iPad and use the scroll wheel it still scrolls the MAC kinda strange bug im going to assume.

Apple today released new developer betas of iPadOS 15.4 and macOS Monterey 12.3, and the updated software adds the long awaited and highly anticipated Universal Control feature. We tested out Universal Control, and even in an early beta form, Universal Control is an easy to use and convenient multi-device control option.

To use Universal Control, the iPadOS 15.4 beta and the macOS Monterey 12.3 beta must be installed on your iPad and Mac, respectively. When you update, the feature is enabled by default and should work automatically, but we did run into an issue where we needed to restart the Mac to get it to work.

Settings for Universal Control on the Mac can be found under Displays > Advanced if you want to turn it off for some reason or change the functionality, and on the iPad, you can find the toggle under General > AirPlay & Handoff.

After updating, if you have a Mac and an iPad next to each other, or even multiple Macs and iPads, you can use the keyboard and cursor on one device across all of them. So, for example, if you have a MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro on your desk as we do in our video, the MacBook Pro's trackpad can be used over on the iPad just by swiping across, as can the keyboard. The same is true of the iPad if you have a keyboard attached. Universal Control works between multiple Macs and between multiple Macs and iPads.

You can drag files from the Mac to the iPad and vice versa, but on iPad, you will need to have the appropriate app open. So if you're dragging a photo from Mac to iPad, you need to open Photos -- it can't go on the Home screen. Trackpad gestures for Mac do not appear to work on the iPad, which is also worth noting.

It's an intuitive and simple-to-use feature because you can just swipe right over from one display to the next with no lag or other hindrances. You can use Universal Control on any Mac or iPad that's signed into your iCloud account, and it's a great example of an Apple feature that "just works."

Have you tried out Universal Control? Let us know what you think in the comments.

So, something simple: how do you close an app that you click open on the iPad and go back to the home screen on the iPad? Works good but once an app is opened but I don't see how I can return the iPad to the homescreen

Doesn’t it just work in the same way as a mouse normally works for this on the iPad? Ie, pull the mouse cursor past the bottom of the screen?

I can understand that I cannot see it on my MBP11.4, but cannot really understand why I am not being able to see it on my iPad mini 4?

Does this feature mean that I will have 16gb RAM on my MBA while working? ?

iPad Pro with m1 8gb RAM + MBA with m1 8gb RAM.
This! I’ve been waiting since the Xgrid days to be able to hook up multiple computers/devices and they share resources. I think TB4 is still too slow, but it would be so cool to have an M1 iPad Pro connected and it functions as a scratch CPU, handling some overflow when needed. A small percentage of users would need that much power, but this could be the start of us eventually getting there.

Well, I can see why it's in beta.

If I have my M1 pro connected to the iMac Pro the click get's stuck and hangs leading to some weird weird issues.

Seems to be okay between M1 Pro and iPad Air. iMac Pro and iPad Air 4 leads to the same issues so damn it Intel.

I hope they fix this soon because it's amazing.

Edit: Spoke to soon. It happens with my M1 Pro <--> ipad Air 4 also.

Updated just a little while ago and Universal Control is working wonderfully on my iMac 24 and iPad Pro 12.9 2nd gen. I always have them side by side on my desk and this makes my iPad sooo much more useful. It was worth the wait!

I'm really impressed with this feature. One thing I've noticed however is that you don't seem to be able to copy and paste between some applications. Sadly the one I use all the time, Affinity Designer, doesn't copy and paste from the iPad app into the Mac app. It does work between the Sketches app on iPad and Mac so maybe this something for Affinity to work out.

Just signed up to the Beta and installed. I have a 12.9" 2021 Pro, but I have a 2021 Mini working it presently.

Btw folks, it's in the Pubic Beta, which is surprising. Go for it.

take bad word .

1. Seem need to "allow platform switching to control your computer" . ?
2. How about a focus keyboard or external keyboard using diff imac and macbook ?
2.1 Using any mouse cursor to respective screen then you can type keyboard ..
2.2 Trackpad gesture from macbook work on ipad ..

** genshin impact only see touch screen not keyboard

I've had intermittent problems with Sidecar between my first generation iPad Pro and my M1-based MacBook Air so I'm not holding out much hope that Universal Control will work reliably (wireless is still pretty flaky, IMO).

In any case, Sidecar is a lot more useful than Universal Control (for me) so here's hoping that they will eventually make Sidecar work as it should (day after day). Plus many apps don't work very well with Sidecar, including Apple's own Music app and Adobe's Photoshop.

In the case of Photoshop trying to use Sidecar can result in unusable save and save as dialogs, they either get displayed incorrectly or not displayed at all (so in some cases you are locked out of trying to save a document until you disable Sidecar). The latter is probably Adobe's fault (bug), but I've seen similar weirdness in Apple's own Music app.

Meanwhile, Mac OS screen sharing (over ethernet) works like a champ between my MacBook Air and a quite old core i7 Mac mini. But, a rock-solid Sidecar is what I'm really after, since that allows me to have two external displays for my M1 MacBook Air.
