Anyone know if this dual screen CarPlay will work on a 2017 XC90 or is it only for newer Volvos
It is for Android Automotive Operating System Cars only, which is not what is on a 2017 model.

Funnily enough, AAOS doesn't allow for Android Auto, but does support Apple Carplay.

I've had this on my Polestar since June, I believe. And whilst in my region I much prefer Apple Maps as it is better than Google and Waze these days, I actually prefer using the Android Automotive Operating System in the car without Apple Carplay. It just works very well, just no need for CarPlay. The only thing I wish for is that Google's road speed database gets updated as it is hopelessly out of date and for some stupid reason, Polestar/Volvo/AAOS prioritises that database over the road sign recognition system.

Agreed. The one in their EX30 is way better, a portrait 12” screen. However, that is the only screen it has, so no dashboard whatsoever, Tesla-style. 🤷🏻‍♂️

a HUD should be mandatory for this setup. if they're going to remove the instrument cluster, a projected HUD in front of the driver with things like speed, fuel/battery level should be immediately in the driver's direct field of view.

My '21 BMW 530e had wireless Apple CarPlay and showed directions in the HUD, along with speed and other information. I agree that it's better to have this information on the windshield.

With next generation CarPlay around the corner, isn't it a better idea to hold off on buying a new car?

At least until early next year.

“Hey Google turn off the seat heater”.

No need to take your eyes off the road at all. You can’t do that if there’s physical switches.

Also you can turn off that automatic seat heater in settings?

A case of RTFM?
Google: Ok, i’ll burn of the seat heater!

Test drove an XC60 a few weeks ago. Found the dual screens distracting. They are also positioned low - so you have to look sort of down off the road to see them while driving. Others I’d driven had screens more at eye level.

Seems to be a very nice car and good weight to it - but the console and controls I did not care for. It was also I think a reflex model - the part hybrid one - whatever it was it made me nauseous too. Was a weird experience.

We drive an S60 Recharge and this was a great update. I really do hope they add turn prompts to the drivers display and heads up soon, it's annoying to still need to glance at the center screen for that. Here in the SF Bay area the Apple Maps directions are almost always better than the built in Goole Maps navigation -- Google Maps in the car seems to suffer from incomplete or greatly delayed traffic data compared to the app on the phone, in addition to often just bizarre local routing.

The shallow storage compartment is because that's where they put the battery in this plug in hybrid. They shoe horned it into an existing model. We love the car, it gets either of us to work and back on electric, after the first 2k miles our average mpg was near 200. Also by far the nicest car we've ever owned. Also 455 HP, you go to pass someone and you're almost instantly going over 100...

Sure, but not all are directly saving it all to the Chinese government database.
I'm still somewhat baffled that Chinese imports are legal.
Oh, don't be silly, they don't all do that at all. Does your iPhone, iPad, Macbook?

Non-domestic market versions of cars part of the Geely group (Volvo, Polestar, Lotus etc) have entirely different operating systems. You can even check which automotive services they connect to for telemetry (Microsoft/Ericsson) and so on...

Perhaps provide some evidence for those statements?

That's why I only lease my cars. I never buy. Imagine all those current Tesla owners who bought a Tesla last week and now Tesla selling for 10k less...ouch.

I have a Volvo XC40 and the touchscreen climate controls, coupled with automatic heated seats that turn on under 40 degrees, make those transition days in and out of winter unbearable. I'm already sweating in a coat running errands, now my seat is on fire and I have to tap four different areas in a moving vehicle to shut it off! GIVE ME A BUTTON.
Use the voice controls. They're easy on a Volvo. BTW, you must have the seat heaters set up for automatic (like my wife does). My Volvo has them set up to go on only when I turn them on.

I remember when Volvo first announced that they were going to incorporate CarPlay in their cars back in 2015:

Volvo has been making really great, comfortable and safe cars for so long and I’m glad that Volvo is taking the right approach that GM chose not to take and sticking with CarPlay because it’s definitely the best car infotainment system by far
That announcement in 2015 made me buy my first Volvo. And I'm only replacing it with a Polestar 3.
