I bought an XBox 360 at Best Buy yesterday, brought it home, and fired it up only to hear what sounded like a blow dryer or a floor vacuum. I had waited and made sure I picked up a Falcon 360, but the disk drive on the 360 still whirs like crazy. There's no way that sound machine was going to work in my quiet room late at night.

So, today I took the 360 back to Best Buy and paid $50 more for a 40g PS3. The PS3 is only slightly louder than my Aluminum iMac, which is to say the PS3 is just a little louder than SILENT! Sorry, Microsoft, but the reason I chose PS3 over the 360 was the sound, and no other reason.

I've been playing Rainbow Six Vegas all night, and it's a blast. The PS3 probably runs games no better or worse than the 360, but I don't care because I can actually use the PS3 to play DVD movies, and the jet-engine 360 was non-functional as a movie player for me.

That's my PS3 story!

I picked up the 40gb PS3 last night. Mostly to use it as a Blu Ray player as there aren't that many games worth getting at the moment (I have a 360 with most of the cross platform hits). The PS3 is a nice piece of hardware, but the Online store is a joke compared to xbox live.

Yes it has wireless.

It is pretty amazing I have to say. I picked up COD4 yesterday and spent most of the night playing online. Will upgrade to a bigger drive soon, since divx, xvid is supported now. You will have to transfer xvid files to the HD for them to work.

You can stream movies wirelessly with EyeConnect. I tried a Divx/Xvid file and it worked fine.

amen to that. I've been screaming that for so long now :)

I'm surprised your new 360 was as really that noisy though. My original launch 360 was loud, the subsequent spare core machine I bought a year later was far less noisy, and when I traded in my launch premium for an elite a few months back, it was quieter still.

Admittedly the Elite is not as quiet as my 60gb PS3, but it certainly isn't that much louder.

^Get one...the games are pouring in now and its a great time to own the console. I think 2008 will be a good year for PS3 titles and I don't think you want to miss out.

My Recommendations:
Warhawk
Uncharted
Ratchet & Clank
UT3
COD4

PSN:
Everyday shooter

Bless

thanks. can i hook it up to my monitor via DVI?

your monitor and the cable both have to be HDCP compliant, otherwise you'll see a blank screen(and/or your look of disappointment reflected back at you from the blank screen)

I don't think you need an HDCP screen to play games, only Blu-ray films. That being said, there are devices out there that will 'convert' HDMI to DVI and keep HDCP intact.

this link will tell you the differences among the playstation 3 models. the 40 gb model looks to be different from the 80 gb in that it doesn't allow for ps2 compatibility of any kind (80 gb has software emulation), and the 40 gb model doesn't have any flash card readers and has two fewer usb ports.

i already have a ps2 and don't mind using it to play ps2 games, so the ps2 compatibility is a bit overrated in my opinion. i also don't think the two extra usb ports make much of a difference either. and if i wanted to up the hard drive, i'd do it myself (for cheaper, too). so, 40 gb ps3 for me...if i were to get one anyhow. :)

yeah, i have a ps2 also, so i guess the 40 would be fine for me also. but can you save games to a memory card? like a SD card?

Not anymore ;) Phased out for the 40GB only.

I got a USA PS3 before the Euro launch so it doesn't bother me anyway :)

i meant you bought a 60GB version? anyways, which would you buy today?

Well I never use the media card reader, and 2 less usb ports isn't that big a deal. PS2 playback is a non issue for you too, so I guess 40GB version.

The reason I went for a 60GB was the wifi, but since the 40 has it, today I would go for the 40GB.

well, the only other question is can you save game data to a SD card, and then load the game saves and all from it?

so is there any good deals or bundles going on right now?

i see that the 80GB one comes with Motostorm, and the 40 comes with Spiderman 3

this makes me want to get the 80GB one. what do you think?

HDCP is a method of content protection pushed by people who don't know better, and it's required by the PS3. ;)
