So what's the chance of my few year old Sony 1080i TV not working? Using Sony Component cables. (I don't want to buy a PS3 and have it not work  )

no...they jsut won't play in 1080p. I think you have to have HDMI to enjoy BD in 1080p. Otherwise it displays in 1080i.
Most cables are HDCP compatible, as well as most HDMI equipped TV's. I merely pointed it out because you said monitor, as many monitors are NOT HDCP compatible. I tried an HP monitor that is not HDCP enabled and got nothing (no boot screen, no video games, no movies, no nothing)

ok, so fry's had a bundle deal:

80 GB - motostorm, xmen 3 movie, remote, 2nd controller - $575
40 GB - spiderman 3 and xmen 3 movie, remote, 2nd controller - $475

which would you get?

Motostorm over Spiderman 3 is probably about $25 worth. So you're basically paying $75 for 40GB extra hard drive space, backwards compatibility and card readers. Personally I think its worth it. Hell you might be in a store some day and see one of the old Final Fantasy games for sale for $5 and fancy trying it.

That second package does look a bit more like its suited for the likes of me - i.e. the ones that wanted it as a Blu-Ray player first and foremost.

Unless I'm mistaken, you only need HDMI cables if the media is HDCP enabled. Otherwise, you will be able to run media in 1080p via component.

Anyway, I'm lovin' my 40 gig PS3. I don't care about BC or the card readers...so, it was perefct for me. And the price is right.

Yes that is correct, but I believe most Blu-Ray discs are HDCP enabled, not sure about games. Of course I have never dealt with it personally. I use HDMI on a 720p/1080i set, so thats all I get anyways.

well, i do have a ps2 slim.

so i went ahead and got the 40GB one. since i was going to buy a game anyways, i didn't want to spend over $600 after the game and taxes. so far so good. got it hooked up to my 24" monitor in 1080P  :D

After a couple of days now with my PS3 40g, I'm really happy I went with this system. Here are a few reasons why...

1. As stated before, the PS3 is way quieter than the 360. A gentle hiss instead of a blow dryer.

2. Although my console gaming has been limited to friends' 360s, I'm much happier with the PS3 controller. It's smaller, fits my hands better, and it's much more lightweight. After a few days of the PS3 controller, the 360 controller feels like a big heavy blob.

3. I never thought about it before, but I completely do NOT miss the vibration/force-feedback of the 360. In fact, after spending several hours  on Rainbow Six Vegas on the PS3, I would never go back to all that vibration. You don't know until you play without it, but all that vibration is annoying and distracting.

4. Although the PS3 interface is a little less intuitive than the 360 interface, the PS3 is also less in-your-face and gaudy. It took just a little while to learn the PS3, but it's more subtle than the 360, which for me means it's better. :p

Anyway, I tried the 360, switched to the PS3, and I have zero regrets.

Believe it or not I'm actually considering the PS3; there's one or two decently priced used 60 GB PS3's around here on Craigslist.

I only hesitate because:
A) I have no HDTV
B) I hate console FPS and sports games, which both the 360 and PS3 are at the moment flooded with...granted, the PS3 less so. But even then, there's only 2 or 3 games out right now that I'd rush to buy.

I've felt that way ever since I switched to the Wavebird on the GameCube.

Rumble was really cool initially as it was well-used in Nintendo's first games with it (Zelda: OoT, StarFox, etc) but these days everyone just overuses the darn thing.

buy the 60GB while its still available, and wait for the more anticipated titles.
Unless you don't care about 4 USB ports and B/C then wait for a cheaper price......when the games/genres you want are out. ;)

Obviously the majority don't agree hence DS3. DS3 is a big improvement over the sixaxis current. I assume come Spring 2008, all PS3's will ship with DS3 instead.

Almost christmas! If I'm lucky I will get a 40gb ps3. If I'm lucky.... well I hope I don't have a fever. I did last night but got better, but now I feel just like I did before last night :(. Wish me luck! With both of these things.

^ But have you been a very good boy this year ? Have you been touching things you shouldn't have this year ? Remember Santa see's everything ;) dirty pervert that he is... :D

Exactly. Rumble-less gaming should be confined to handhelds. Games like MGS and Ocarina of Time made the rumble an integral part of the experience. Hell the heart rate monitor in MGS was pure genius.

The DS3 is a vast improvement over the old model but I'm not putting an order down till I really get into my PS3.

Maybe totally off topic but an engineer chap at my old university isolated the deep tones from a game and somehow sent them through to a set of vibrating motors built into a chair. Now that was an experience, for racing and FPS it was awesome.

I don't think so...Its not really that importnt to really enjoy the game..I've been doing good(without vibration) since the PS3 came out and I don't feel that I've missed much without it but its still good to have.

spyker...I know how you feel man I just got over the fever(add the fact that I had to work) my throat was all messed up this weekend but I took some antibiotics and thera-flu and I'm feeling a whole lot better.

Bless

I don't know who you're talking to… all of the CoD4 fans I know LOVE Call of Duty 4. It's taken over Halo 3 as the most often played game on my friends list.

Yeah, I'm Play COD 4 online everyday and I love it. I either go for Domination or Headquarters. It's a great game!

The only thing I miss from COD 3 was capture the flag and the chatter between teammates. There was more talking in COD 3, but COD 4 is so intense that I guess there isn't much time for chat and such.
