Using a credit card:
3) Swipe card.

I tried out a new chipped card last night to see what the experience will be as swiping becomes less available next year.

It'll take some time to get used to not swiping a card.

Although it doesn't necessarily add time to the overall transaction, it does add more time standing there, open wallet in hand. With a swiped transaction it seems typically you can swipe the card, put it away, then do the button pressing / signing / whatever the terminal needs, gather your stuff while it prints the receipt, then be on your way. With the chip&sign it was insert the card, do the transaction stuff on the terminal while holding your wallet, wait for it authorize, then remove your card, put it away in your wallet, put your wallet away, finally gathering your stuff and leaving.

It was a bit of a contrast to my prior stop at home depot where I held my phone to the terminal with my thumb on the home button for a couple seconds.

I'm sure the chip&sign or chip&pin process will get smoother with repetition/familiarity.

I have switched to PetCo instead of PetSmart, Sheetz instead of Rutters (sorry Rutters; no NFC yet), and Walgreens instead of CVS.

Where there is one of the stores, there's the "competition" very close by, so it does not effect me.

My first (and only) Apple Pay experience

- Drove to Walgreens (and past by my Target Store)
- Grabbed a gallon of milk for the kids
- Asked if they do ApplePay, angry manager said "it's not ready yet"
- Tapped to pay anyway and it worked. Cashier said "oh cool"
- Drove home

Overall the experience was nice, but in the end I drove further than usual, paid $1 more for milk and didn't get my usual 10% off (5% Targer Card, 5% Target Cartwheel App)

So, because I prefer saving money over convenience, I have yet to find an opportunity to use it again.

I can't believe how far behind a country like America is with this stuff, it sounds like contactless payment is a rare thing, with places that accept it few and far between.

They should bring Apple Pay to the UK, we are ready and waiting.

"I can't believe how far behind America is..."

"... they should bring Apple Pay to the UK"

Sounds like its not America thats behind, buddy.

I wouldn't change where I shop just to use Apple Pay. But I appreciate it where it can be used and hope it gets more widely adopted since the security advantages are tremendous in this age of store chains (and now even the post office) getting hacked all the time.

Welcome to 2014..... get over it! What's the difference between me talking to someone next to me in line or on the phone? None..... PLUS it's not your concern what another does in line, sit there, shut your pie hole and listen to their conversation or don't but who the hell are you to tell others what they can and can't do? People such as yourself really need to adjust to the times..... can't keep up then lock yourself in a bubble and hope the 1950's come around again.
Tried adding this but it didn't take..... Is it polite to speak to the sales person? Sure and I do....I'm able to do more than one thing at a time like be on the phone with someone AND acknowledge another person. I wound't stop talking to a person that was next to me while paying for something so why should I stop talking on the phone to that person? Times change and so do the social norms.... one can be polite to another person AND be on the phone with another.

I couldn't imagine knowing AFDoc, he has to be one of those annoying people that has no consideration for anyone around them. I think talking on the phone in line while you are being helped by salesperson has to be one the rudest things you can do, I can not stand people like that. I'm sure they have a cracked screen and talking into the phone on speaker also.

Yes, it is extremely disrespectful to not only those in line, but especially the cashier -- who is being essentially treated as a vending machine in that instance, with no regard for the cashier's existence as an actual human being.

I've noticed that this has caused many businesses to put up signs saying they won't help a customer who is on their cell phone.

Just curious, but what does apple pay do/offer above and beyond a simple credit card?

1) Better security
2) Much faster
3) Supports all your cards
4) It's a bit of a status symbol
5) Don't have to bring your wallet

1) In what sense? I've been using CCs for many years, and sure several times I've had fraudulent charges, but the CC company always discovered them and not once have I ever been liable.

2) No way, it takes 15 seconds to pull out a card and swipe it then sign. After waiting in a line for 5-10 minutes a few seconds here or there is pretty insignificant.

3) so does my wallet, but I only need 2 cards anyway.

4) Wha?? you're kidding, that's what strokes your ego?

5) OK, but I carry a wallet with ID, permits, insurance, cards, etc. anyway. I guess for someone that doesn't...

As of monday I am no longer a cashier.

Thanks for treating us like humans. Means a lot.

I get that not everyone wants to talk (we are required to do so), but a simple acknowledgment to our "Hi" goes a long ways.

And don't even get me started on the 95% of the people on their phones....

All in all, happy to be out of retail in the nick of time this year!

Has anyone changed their habits in order to use Apple Pay?

That's why we should raise the minimum wage to 15$ so cashiers that have to deal with the travesty of people talking on their phones can cope...I'll talk all day on the phone but when it's time to order I pull the phone away from my head. From working as a cashier in high school I won't even pull up to the drive thru order window until I know whati want. Got tired of listening to everyone go ummmmm ummmmmm uummmmm ummmm for 30 seconds
