If I had nothing to compare it to, I'd probably think the iPhone 3G was fine ... But since I've got an iPod touch as well, it's easy to compare them side by side - the difference is blatantly obvious and it bugs me! But if you had nothing to compare it to, the iPhone 3G would probably be fine.

totally understand ^^

As I said previously, the moment Winterboard is installed through Cydia the major SMS lag and other more minor lags occur. This is before you've even launched it never mind customized the springboard.

So many seem to be in agreement that it is winterboard causing the lag then? I am wondering if this is the case or not as I had never jailbroken my phone pre-2.1. I do notice a lag now though. SMS, contacts etc. have a slight lag when compared to the "virgin" iphone. I don't really want to uninstall winterboard though as this is one of the main reasons I jailbroke.

Anyone who jailbroke their iphone pre-2.1 have lag problems also because if winterboard, or is this just a conflict with the 2.1 update and this program? Maybe there will be a winterboard update that will address this...

To be honest, I don't care anymore.

Having a phone that "just works"(tm) and doesn't slowly grind to a halt over a few days has got kind of habit-forming.

I don't miss anything from the jailbreak scene.

I've never had my phone "grind to a halt" at any point during my current jailbreak stint. And for what it's worth, the phone wasn't any more or less in line with the "it just works" mantra whether it's jailbroken or not. Mine works fine.

And yes, WinterBoard will cause slight, and i mean negligible lag when you theme your phone. Where you will notice SUBSTANTIAL lag with WinterBoard is when you use widgets. A standard theme with custom icons and whatnot won't really affect it at all. It does not cause battery drain or anything like that either. Another thing to keep in mind is the lag is really only noticeable on the springboard when transitioning home screens and when opening apps (and again, only with things like widgets that eat resources) but when the app is actually open, the phone diverts the resources to that program and it will work as it should, so if you open up a game, it will not lag or anything like that. I have personally tested this using "top" (terminal command to view running processes and resource usage, available via Cydia), and the phone does not continue to give resources to previously running programs or the SpringBoard, and instead puts these processes to sleep, using 0% of the CPU and giving all the resources to the app that you currently have running in the foreground. What i would advise people is to not fall into that psychosomatic state of expecting certain things to happen when you jailbreak cause eventually you will notice things that really aren't there and aren't because of the jailbreak process.

I personally couldn't handle a non-jailbroken iPhone at this point, and it's gonna take more than Google street-view maps and Emojicons to get me to update to 2.2 before a proper method of jailbreaking is available. PdaNet alone makes jailbreaking worthwhile for me. But to each his/her own, running a stock phone is absolutely fine, and there is really nothing to lose in jailbreaking if you know what you're doing.

Except speed, which is the whole point of this thread. What you consider a 'minor' slowdown is a big deal to those of us who think the iPhone is slow enough with vanilla firmware ... ;)

Jailbroken phone on 2.1 software. Complete full winterboard theme and no widgets. took me 3 seconds to open my SMS and 4 seconds to open settings.

My girlfriends stock iPhone 2.1. Took her 3 seconds to open SMS and 3 seconds to open settings.

I've also compared opening the same apps from my phone and her phone and didn't see any difference. It is almost the same.... I can't say the same for everyone, but I don't notice any issues with winterboard at all.

I would be interested to know what else you have installed and running through Cydia. Maybe this could give us further clues. I definitely have a slow down with mine compared to stock iphone in apple store. I used Quickpwn and have 2.1 installed on my 3G iphone. I have a bunch of crap installed. Stacks, Categories, Backgrounder (not running anything though I checked), Winterboard, Custom theme with icons, Custom battery on lockscreen, MIM, Cycorder, BossPrefs, WbApp. I think that is it mainly. I was running the weather widget as well, but quit that as I know it was making things slow down even further.

Lets get this figured out.

my winterboard is pretty empty. I uninstalled every theme that I don't use. So the only theme i have in winterboard is the theme I use. But my theme changes just about everything (lockscreen, signal bar, icons, transparant labels,slider...etc....). I don't have any widgets running. As for apps, the jailbroken apps I have installed are cycorder, iReboot, Winterboard, WbApp, Installer, Cydia, MIM, BossPrefs, Notifier, Categories (turned off keep resident option), mxtube, dtunes, and tunewiki. I do have about 30 app store apps installed.

but one thing I do is that I reboot my phone 3 or 4 times a day for no reason. It seems to help a lot. I also removed as many apps as I can in the "settings' menu and it seems to be faster now.

Same problem here ... slooow

I've read the entire thread.
I've jailbreak my iPhone 2.1 with quickpawn.
I've now manually remove Inastaller and all unused themes from wintherboard.
Reboot.
Same slow problem.
Cydia takes 15 seconds to startup !!!
Calendar, sms, calculator ... all takes 5-6 seconds to startup.

i've no video theme.
Installed some cydia applications (backgrounder, categories, whinterboard, searcher, intelliscreen ... ) and some App Store ones.
I've no more idea on how to reduce that incredible slooow loading applications problems ...

Categories (turned off keep resident option),
I also removed as many apps as I can in the "settings' menu and it seems to be faster now.

With categories (turned off keep resident option) opening each folder doesn't take about 5 second to load all application in it ?

Sorry but i cannot understand what does it mean 'i also removers as many apps i can in the settings menu': you mean applications that inserted preferences in the general iphone preference panel ?
i've 8 third part application that use that panel ...

Just UN-installed my Winterboard and woah, everything is fast again. I love my themes, but hate the slowdown. Will try to re-install winterboard with just one theme and see what happens.

Worse case - I'll manually theme my phone until a better version of WB can be released.

How do you'll manually theme your iPhone ?
I mean: i disinstall my wintherboard, may i use my 5 icons dock+orb theme status bar, Intelliscreen, Categories, and background image ?
Are you sure that all the slow down depends only by wintherboard ?
