I think the chances of us getting underglass touch ID next year are about the same as getting the headphone jack back. Apple doesn't often remove tech and then put it back later.
Yeah, but if it's true that they wanted Touch ID built into the screen and had to leave it out because they couldn't figure it out in time...

I don't believe that is true. Face ID doesn't seem like a back up plan technology, it seems like something they have been working on for quite a while and if I'm honest I don't see underglass Touch ID as an improvement over face ID, but I understand lots of people disagree with me.

It's a big reason why I've gotten turned cold on the X. I always keep phones for two years. I'd be pissed if I got this year's X and then next year's has Touch ID again. I'm not giving Apple so much money two years in a row, and I've never thought there's been a reason to upgrade only after one year.

If FaceID actually works well, than I do not think it is that big of a deal. With a two week return policy, I think that is enough time to know if the lack of touchID is a deal breaker. Like you, I now keep my phones around 2 years. If I get the X and cannot stand the lack of TouchID I would just return it or sell it.

The iPhone X hasn't turned me off Apple. I actually have no opinion of the X as of this time.

What turns me off are all the pundits and industry analysts who are ranting that Apple needs to continuously change to keep up with Samsung, and to keep revenue and profit up for shareholders, etc. We really don't need new phones every year do we? But shareholders want to keep that price up so Apple has got to innovate and have some reason for people to buy the latest phones or *gasp* Samsung might gain market share. That and the Apple and Samsung fans have to have something to keep debating about.

That being said, maybe having both the X and the 8 series is actually a good idea. The former provides something new for those who thrive on change and want to be in on the bleeding edge. The 8 provides continuity of an already good design.

In any case, it doesn't matter to me, I'm sticking with my iPhone 6 for now! :p

My concern with that is that if it works by scanning while looking up at your face at an odd angle and possibly scanning it from the underside, it might be easier to fool. And if it worked from such extreme angles, then why didn't they show that during the keynote? It would be very impressive. My guess is that if it does work from extreme angles like the ones you discuss, then it doesn't work very well and not on a consistent basis.
Have a look at the many hands-on videos following the keynote. There are some angled authentication examples there. Not huge angles but enough to have it unlock just before you're looking directly at it to use.

May also alleviate your concerns that Apples Face ID will behave like the initial incarnations of Samsung etc.

It appears pretty seemless from the footage that's out there.

We'll see.

Well 2017 will be remembered for the year Apple finally released the phone that should have arrived in 2016. Then when it was announced they dropped the bombshell that they didn’t want their core consumers buying it after all and simply reserved it for those stupid enough to pay over a grand.

I suppose it did sour my opinion of the company if I’m honest. It feels like we are being ripped off somewhat and they thought by adding a half hearted effort with the iPhone 8 softened the blow. This year for me was as disappointing as last year when the iPhone 6 was released for a third time. A fourth iPhone 6 and premium Samsung S8 just don’t cut it for me. I’ll buy whatever next year at a reduced price... How to kill enthusiasm in 24 months.

I agree with what Craig Federighi stated last week in an article about Face ID. Basically he stated once users have be ability to use and test Face ID, they will absolutely appreciate the ease and simplicity behind it. I look forward to testing it.

Of course not. I love Apple products and am heavily invested in the ecosystem. I was initially excited about the X and planned to preorder it, but after thinking it over I decided the iPhone 8 was a better choice for me for several reasons and I'm very happy with my decision. I just hope I won't be sorry when I see that beautiful Oled screen.

I understand some of the sentiment.

For me, the love affair with Apple is over. Even though I've only been an iPhone owner since the 6s, I did purchase an iPod in 2010 and an iPad in 2011.

Great products. No regrets buying either of them.

But yes...the things that have transpired last year (with the 3.5mm jack) and this year, have shown me the core values with the company have changed.

It happened slowly since Jobs died.

I'm not kicking them to the curb, but the love affair is definitely over.

I'm still planning on getting the X to replace my dummy X.

Nah. The X simply isn’t what I want. Now if you asked if the way they handle/price their underwhelming laptops/desktops, then that’d be another thread. ;)

It did. For three weeks. Then I came back. Granted, I came back because of iMessage issues mainly, but I returned my S8+ and got an 8 Plus. I still don’t see me getting past the notch, but I must say the 8 plus is really a nice phone.

I'm done after 15 years of Apple

The 7 pushed me due to the same freaking design for the 3rd year but the 8 was the icing.

People on here try to defend that but you really can't, I've seen some try and say the 4/4S/5/5S were the same and that's utter bull.

They've gone super Snidey cheap using the same design for 4 years and pushed the prices up for no reason.

Then they have the cheek to make you pay £75 if you want to fast charge your phone in 2017 ffs

I won't even start on the joke of a phone X, not one hands on sounded impressed at all.

They all seemed scared though to slate it because apple will ban them in future.

"Has the iPhone X turned you off Apple?"

I'm going to say yes, to an extent. Anyone who has seen my posts on here over the years will know that I am a big Apple fan. I have owned and loved many of their products and defended many of their controversial descisions.

However.......times are changing, and I'm finding Apple are turning me off slowly but surely. The iPhone X strikes me as a phone that has had a troubled conception, however Apple are still hailing it as the second coming and charging a price that goes beyond premium. The new folio case.....£99, the current iPads receiving a price hike of £50 for no reason, the storage options of 64GB or 256GB meaning too little or too much, pushing people to go for the latter.

Apple have been pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable for quite some time, but with the iPhone X, for me, it has got to the end of the road. A phone that is lacking on exciting features, but has had a price bump way beyond what it is worth. All the while the average wage remains roughly the same.

For all the talk of how much they value diversity, honesty, values etc, they are quite happy to milk us for everything we are worth. Yes they are a business but they also take the pi$$ to the absolute maximum. There will be many on here who don't agree...the same people who will go out and buy 5 iPhone X's and tell us all about it on here. A fool and his money as they say.

Well stated, and I completely agree

Nope. Apple still makes a great product. People's expectations are just wildly out of control.

out of control?

yeah, I was just thinking the other day...what the heck can you expect for more then $1000 on a smartphone?

I feel like the iPhone x should have been true full screen and the notch should have been gone, Apple should have figure out how to get the Touch ID under the screen. I felt like they don’t take risks anymore.

What is so special about the X? It has a better screen which will be good for apple but not compared to samsung, and it's got a new way to unlock your phone. Aside from it being a different screen size, there isn't really much that separates it from the 4th generation iPhone 6. This is the phone you have been working on for 3 years or more??? LOL!!!! Wheres that all sapphire screen I was looking forward to 3 years ago. Still haven't gotten there huh? Maybe the iphone XX then.

You guys are really losing your touch apple. Glad you have been able to ride the Steve Jobs gravy train that was established with iOS for so long but people have been figuring it out for themselves over the last few years. Your devices have become boring and are falling behind the competition and your software is also becoming sloppy. Lucky for you it's not the convoluted train wreck of Android although you only have half its features and capability.

And what exactly do you think a new smart phone should be able to do? Beam you to the moon and back?

Where is this new groundbreaking technology you think they can put in a phone?

Newsflash guys. The original iPhone brought a new type of portable device to this world. Made it popular anyway.. Everything after has been improvements. And until someone invents a radical new screen or fractionally smaller internals or time travel. You will not be wowed. Lower your explanations.

I think the iPhone X is very exciting, though clearly it's quite polarizing. I think it's a fascinating prototype for where Apple wants to take its lineup in the future and it's cool that people have the option to preview that future now. I just don't know if it would be a practical choice for my needs and wants at this time.

There are indications they intend to do very interesting things in the next few years. Same with the competition. It will all be fun to watch.

I have no idea, I am not working for Apple.
But as a consumer, I expect something special/groundbreaking for a $1150/€1359 smartphone. But that's just me.

I am very aware of the fact that there are loads of people who dont care for a bit what Apple is giving them for this amount of money. ''It's Apple, so it's okay''

I'm not sure anyone is going to add materially to what we have currently.

We've already got FP validation and iris or FaceID is just about here too. Once they figure out how to do it under the glass, what's left?

Not so much the X as the software. Apple can change the design to a square and it would matter. The software is what gets me still a grid of icons. No real way to customize. No real multi tasking. No split screen which I actually use a lot. Maybe next year since ios 11 was mainly a upgrade for ipads. Until apple changes the software it really is the same old phone just in a different looking body. For me anyway. I'll keep my 7 plus as a backup device for now.
