If you go to the apple store right now and try to order an i7 15" with Hi Res glossy screen -or- the 7400RPM 500g drive, it will say shipping time is now 5-7 days out.

That tells me either they had limited supply of the upgraded components and demand for that configuration outstripped their expectations.

Ordering a base i7 15" still says ships next day.

Same thing with any 15" with a high res glossy.

From what I read here, Chinese factories don't stop for anything. This article is about micro$oft, but I would imagine apple has the same type of factories (why else operate in China?)

Sadly, quite true; I'd guess the only thing to make them stop is some American company getting bad press, then promising to "fix" the factory (or go to some other "good" factory), and then temporarily running it with "worker-friendly" shifts while the media looks around or whatever. Then back to sweatshop mode until the next exposé comes out. I do feel bad thinking about what's probably going into getting these things assembled and shipped. :( Try to buy American or Western European-made when I can, but obviously there's no option in cases like this.

Hmm, it shows me 1 - 3 business days for the 7200RPM upgrade. The only upgrade that shows as longer is the Hi-Res Glossy, which is showing as 5 - 7 days as you said...

Well that's bizzare. If I just click on the 7200RPM update, I get 5-7 days...just tried it again.

This ticks me off. Apple did the same thing with the ipad. I dont know why they never have enough stock in parts. I ordered a CTO 15" i7 MBP on wendesday and it still hasnt even been prepared to ship

Showing 5 - 7 days for the 7200RPM 500GB for me now too, actually, for the 15", but the 17" still shows 1 - 3 days. It probably is indeed 5 - 7 days, perhaps just synchronization lag between cached data at different datacenters or whatnot...

I wonder if folks who haven't had their orders built yet and have a 7200RPM upgrade pending will start getting shipment date delay emails in the next few days... same for folks with 15" Hi-Res Glossy displays.

I agree... if these things were "Made in the USA" with the same profit margin as they get in China, it'd be more like buying a new car than an electronic device. Such is the economy of the 21st century.

Great thing is that I didn't order it until the afternoon of 3/14 :)

I ordered the identical machine at 8:45am on New Mac Tuesday. Mine has also just been updated to Prepared for Shipment.

^^^ I ordered online because I wanted to customize it. Plus the nearest Apple store is about 75 miles one way from me.

My tracking number just got updated with Apr 17, 2010 5:23 AM In transit. I hope this doesn't mean it just now left China? The last status update I got was Apr 16, 2010 11:32 AM Left FedEx origin facility SHANGHAI CN

In Alaska. Hopefully it is going to Memphis at 4PM Alaskan time. (8PM EST?)

Volcano eruption. Sucks.

I just traded in my c2d mbp for the 15" i5. (They granted me a refund even though I was over the timeframe... I was angry)

Same exact computer as mine. It is 5:52AM now in Shanghai, China. Yours should be on a plane soon.

Ireland isn't quite so hard hit and is clearing up faster it seems... It seems most transatlantic DUB/SNN flights are running just fine, just east/south-bound flights are being cancelled.

Unfortunately, it seems that your packages would likely be routed through UPS' Cologne hub or one of the UK ones, since there don't seem to be UPS/FedEx cargo flights from the US into Ireland. (Wikipedia claims DUB has UPS service from SDF, but with no references, and I can't find any such flights.) So you are probably indeed going to see some ash cloud-related delays.

are you all ordering online because your customizing it and/or going to an Apple Store is inconvenient?

Well, there's an Apple store a 20 minute walk from me. However, when I called on the 13th they said they didn't have any of what I wanted in stock, but should soon. If I hadn't gone to Prepared for Shipment today, there'd have been a decent chance they'd have gotten some in while I could still cancel, but it's not a huge difference. I understand not having all display types in stock, but I do find it kinda stupid that Apple doesn't let you customize things like RAM or HDs at the store. They can certainly do warranty replacements on-site for those types of parts, and even LCDs. I see no reason they can't ship extra RAM and some extra HDs of the popular sizes/speeds to the stores and let you have a same or next-day build. For people who buy Apple stuff at the store and forego some upgrade they didn't want to wait for ordering online, Apple's just losing out on easy profit by not letting the store do it.

Oh no! So my CTO has another scan, but it's still in China..

Apr 17, 2010 5:23am In Transit Shanghai CN

So much for being on the earlier flight to Alaska. Perhaps it's on the one to Memphis instead (which is still in flight)

Exactly the same situation as me! I'm not really sure what it means but I suspect our MBP's are only just leaving now.

My expected delivery date is 4/21 and I live on the East coast.

Hi psychos,

Since you have done a lot of research, mind to share with us the route from China to the UK? Will it go by the east-bound or the least efficient west-bound direction (i.e. through US)? FeDex or UPS?

Thanks a lot! :D
