I tried the store but was told no so I came home and called support. They emailed me a label that I taped to the box that my 6S Plus came in along with the original box my 6 Plus came in. I dropped it in my mailbox and its on its way. I should have dropped it at the post office and asked for a receipt but we'll see what happens.

The rep I spoke to said he didn't have a way to send me a label. Is that the only way they can tell the phone came from you? Also do you mind saying what you account status shows for the phone you are returning?

Remove other accessories like case and screen cover. No where does it say anything conclusive about charger, cord or ear phones. Read that several of you have been told not to ship back charger EarPods and cable. I will pull those out before shipping in morning. Thanks.

Try again, they emailed me a label. Looking at my account I see my new phone is showing as my current phone and no reference to my old that I can find.

I went to corporate store today tried to turn in phone. Said they could not take it, had to be shipped back using label. Boxed it up in same box as new phone came in, removed ups labels, taped on usps shipping sticker and will take to post office tomorrow.

Make sure you get a receipt from the Post Office. Last month I did the same with a Galaxy and AT&T said they never received it...

what a PITA AT&T is. brings back memories of trying to trade in my iphone 4 for $200 gift card they had awhile back. The service is great and there are no issues if you don't have to deal with them, but the minute you have to contact them it's absolutely terrible. Why would you not be able to trade them in store? Same thing when next first came out, you had to have the phone shipped to you.

we never got any return emails so i had to do a chat with them and got them, what's weird is the emails read like a return of a defective device (RMA number on the label), i asked twice to be sure it was the right label (there was also nothing that distinguished what line it was for, had to ask for that too) then i asked about the accessories and was told to send those too, then was told 2 lines later in the chat to not include them (it was clearly copy and pasted) so no accessories.

we'll see how this goes.

They really are. It's almost worth me paying off both our phones and keeping them just so we won't have to go through this next year if the 7 is something we choose to upgrade to. AT&T if you read this, PLEASE get all your support people on the same page and make your own process easier. Obviously there's a problem.

(I'm not expecting AT&T to see this, but you never know...)

I bet you they are using third party to receive phones and process. Just like outsourcing user help to phone warehouse in Mumbai. Saves a few cents for AT&T but user experience stinks. Rather spend the money on marketing telling us how great they are as opposed to actually spending to make it great.

yeah i'm on Next as well and thinking about just paying it off and selling them or trading them in elsewhere. Will be paying in full on new phones or using apple's program. AT&T just irritates the crap out of me having to deal with them in anyway.

The Active Communications AT&T store here just told me that they will take my phone in at the store.

If you have already upgraded to your new iPhone, is it possible to payoff your old one? Where do you find out what the amount is?

I was also rejected by an AT&T corporate store. Only option is to ship. My wife and I each ordered new phones through Apple but only she received the return label in her email. I didn't. So I had to do a support chat with AT&T to get a label emailed to me. Which is a pain, because these chat reps take forever to respond (I think they do about ten chats at one time) so it seemed like 40 min before I was done with the chat. Anyway, I just dropped the boxes off at the post office this morning.

Go to your orders on apple.com
Select the order for your iPhone
There should be a link that says "Email Trade-In Instructions"
It will send you an email with a link to the label and a PDF of the instructions!

This is disappointing. So I have to send my phone back in mail, worry about it getting damaged or lost, then have to wait to see if they determine if it's good enough or not, then either get some bogus offer of less than the outstanding balance left or nothing and get it sent back -- in case I have to worry about it getting lost again. Then I have two phones with two payments to deal with, my new one and my old one.

I wonder if the Apple trade-in program will be easier. It'd be nice to have a "genius" run a few tests, sign off on it on the spot, and the upgrade transaction is done right there and then.

This is ridiculous. The chat people told me a store as well. Oh well, let's just go back to the snail mail for this. I can't wait to do that.

if you go to your phone bill it will actually show what the amount is that is owed. it's located near where it lists out the next monthly charge. You can also pay your bill online under payments, it may show the amount there, but not 100% positive.

When I picked up my phone at the Apple store today, they gave me a return label and -- wait for it -- a bubble-wrap padded envelope to send my phone back in. Not a box. An envelope. USPS.

The salesman said "That's what AT&T gave us to send them back in."

I think I'll add some cardboard or something to stiffen it up. And take pics of it before I send it. I don't want to pound on the USPS too much but once my mom sent me a printer USPS and it looked like it had been kicked here all the way from Georgia.

Make sure you make a video that shows the serial number and you disabling Find My iPhone (activation lock). If AT&T claims your iPhone is useless because activation lock is still on, you have proof. Just move the camera when you're entering your Apple ID password.

No, once you opt for an upgrade, the old installment plan is considered "paid off" and you're expected to send back the phone. Not sure what happens if you don't send it back within the allotted time frame. I would assume they would go ahead and charge you what the remaining installments would have been. In the case of a 64GB 6, it would be $299.99.

Thank you for posting this!

Before reading your post, i was bouncing back and forth between AT&T phone reps and a local AT&T store. The phone reps told me to go to the store. And the store told me to call AT&T. Frustrating.

I found the return instructions thanks to you. Thanks again. Why doesn't AT&T train their people better? Geez.

Apple could have displayed the information a little more prominently too. I didn't notice it either until I read about it on another Macrumors thread. They have nice big buttons for track and pre-sign, but the return instructions link is only in small print below. And you shouldn't even have to request it be emailed to you. If they know you purchased your new phone on a NEXT upgrade, they could send you those instructions automatically.
