Nice job reading the posts directly below mine that already corrected me on that ;)

Regardless, while it is technically capable of playing back those formats, there is no content distributed in that format. Yes, you can create your own, but mom and pop can't do that and it's not simple. No one sells 720p movies that'll play on the Apple TV without a painful conversion process.

Sorry, my ignorance[:

...because Fox supports Blu-Ray exclusively, and Fox owns Star Wars.

Actually the deal struck between Lucas and Fox for Star Wars that Lucas owns Star Wars including publishing, merchandising, and full fledged ownership. At the time Fox Studios did not want to take such a risk in marketing Star Wars so Lucas owns it all.

No probs, I stand corrected. However, something tells me Lucas will favour Blu-Ray in the same way Spielberg does. Lucas is a tech-fetishist, and BR is technically the better of the two. Anyway, I'm sure it'll be a very long time until we see how it'll really turn out...

Actually Lucas is a little bloated toad in a lumberjack shirt who likes to milk every last penny from his franchises to the point where he destroys any charm and majesty they once may have had.

He will go where the most money is.... and probably support both formats as that = more sales more $$$$.

Hilarious, true and possibly the best description of Lucas ever :D

blu ray hasnt won it, but are in the driver seat. they are outselling hd-dvd in standalone players now (not counting ps3) and outsell hd-dvd on all dual releases.

i am really waiting for mac to drop an axe and include a blu ray drive in their next pro series. hell, i wouldnt mind an hd dvd drive either i guess, but gimme blu.

you can't discount ps3, it's the cheapest bd player on the market!
i spent a week on amazon looking up bd players, and a 40gb ps3 (with Spider-Man 3, and a mail-in for 5 more bd movies) was the best deal.

Surely, the winner will be the one with the most movies people want to see? If that's the case, Blu-ray has it in the bag.

How the hell can HD-DVD survive without James Bond, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Spider-Man, Star Wars, X-Men, Ghostbusters....etc??

I do own a PS3 and a small collection of Blu-rays, but I am no means a BR fanboy. In fact, I kinda prefer HD-DVD in some ways, but it just doesn't have the movies I want to see (except Transformers).

also, for all of the families out there, bd has disney. that may seem trivial to most of you sayig that porn will choose the winner, but that's mainly a market for guys (most women don't watch porn). mothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and every other relative will but their kid a disney movie (traditionally porn is reserved for the 18+ age-group)

^I didn't know it was out on high def...I'll have to get it on HD-DVD then(I have both) HD-DVD/Blu-ray looks the same to me and I'm satisfied with both.

Only time will tell about these formats but blu-ray is really going strong now but that doesn't mean it will win...as proven its not always about what it can do.

Bless

This is something I've been waiting for...I'm not a star wars fan so I really dont care for it but LOTR bring it on.

titles I'm really waiting to hit that blu-ray: Aliens quadrilogy & The Thing(I love old movies)

amazon has lotr in both formats

Yeah it was one of the first HD-DVD's I bought.

I too am satisfied with both. Quality wise they ARE identical. Especially new ones where they both are encoded with the same codec anyway.

if you have both, and realize that blu ray is going strong now....why would you buy it on hd dvd? seems like economically speaking the smarter choice is to get it on blu, unless of course its more expensive. not to mention the whole space issue with hd-dvd, as these are large movies, to say the least:

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy will be released on both Blu-ray and HD-DVD on November 23, 2007.
As a gesture of good faith over the Matrix release, New Line/WB will be releasing only the Extended Editions on Blu-ray at this time, while HD-DVD will get only the Theatrical Versions.
The Blu-ray version will be on a BD50 in VC-1 with PCM. It will also showcase a lot of the neat features of BD-J.
(validity should be questioned, and would love if someone can confirm this)

are there stand alone combo players out yet ? after all those combo drives are already available on the PC (a local chain is offering a 899 PC with such a drive from LG i think)

if you have both, and realize that blu ray is going strong now....why would you buy it on hd dvd?

I don't think its out on blu-ray but it is on HD-DVD and I have a HD-DVD player...why should I wait..will my HD-DVD player fade if it lose will I not be able to watch it on my Hd-dvd device if blu-ray wins?

If its not on one platform I'll get it for the other...no big deal for me...I wont shun my hd-dvd/blu-ray player if they don't "win"

Paprika is coming out on Blu-ray tomorrow and I want it....if things happen to turn around should I wait for them to put it on hd-dvd or should I just bite the bullet and get it when I want it?

Bless

Does anyone besides Toshiba offer a HD DVD player? Every HD DVD Player I've seen has been manufactured by Toshiba including the 360 add-on.

Lord of the Rings on HD? They're not stocking them on Amazon.co.uk yet, I'll have to import the region free HD-DVD version :)

I don't have them on DVD yet so I might have to get this.

The 23rd of November has come and gone. Amazon does not offer these in any HD format. There is only a placeholder for each.

Monkeytap, assuming your info is correct (minus the release date bit), why is it a good faith gesture that they're not putting the extended versions on HD-DVD? Would you be less satisfied with WB/New Line if HD-DVD owners were able to watch the same version as Blu? Seriously, is this what it's come to people?

i dont have an hd-dvd player, so maybe im wrong, but I believe they are being released on both formats at the same time. im just looking to the future when you upgrade your player it will most likely be blu, and will not play your LOTR trilogy on hd-dvd.

blu-ray is winning, no doubt, and with the ps3 is guranteed to be around longer if the other format wins, so buying on blu rather than hd-dvd would be the smart choice.

and with LOTR, I would buy on blu anyways seeing the size advantage blu has.

im not sure what "a good faith" gesture is (sounds sketchy IMO) BUT i saw that LOTR is getting the BD-50 (50 GB disc) treatment on blu-ray, and would not be surprised if hd-dvd's discs could not hold the extended edition.

they were already forced to skimp on transformers, so not hard to believe.

i think there are a few others but they might just be rebranding the toshiba...but im not sure, hd-dvd fanboys?

i read today that onkyo has discontinued production of their hd-dvd player. IMO, we are now beginning to see the backlash/consequences of the toshiba firesale over the past few weeks. they are losing all of their support because no one except microsoft/toshiba will make any money on hd-dvd anymore since micro/tosh are selling way below cost

i do know blu, however, and there are many players: Sony, Panasonic, samsung, pioneer, phillips, LG, sharp, mitsubishi, JVC, loewe, denon, daewoo.

My guess would be that a 30GB disc is plenty large to fit the extended edition. Maybe not all of the bonus materials that have shown up on various large DVD box sets over the years, but I'm the kind of person who finds 99% of those bonus materials to be absolute garbage.

Hopefully we'll get some more info soon.

i agree with bonus features, most of the time there junk, and can easily be put onto a seperate disc for those who really need it.

BUT, why would you guess 30 GB is plenty given transformers is waaay shorter than any of the LOTR theatrical editions (not to mention extended!)???

my guess is, if hd-dvd gets extended, it will get the laserdisc treament..."Insert disc 2 to continue movie"
