Same here.

Found similarly placed crack on the bottom middle of the touchpad. This is the new single body MB. It happened while traveling. Macbook was in my backpack protected in a "incase" brand padded neoprene sleeve.

At first I thought hotel staff was careless in storage of my luggage or had used it, but no evidence of damage on the outside aluminum case or the glass screen. I'm guessing my bag may have been placed under other luggage which sqeezed the touchpad surface against the underlying screw.

In fact, if you look closely, there's a focal rounded point where the crack may have begun.

Touchpad and click however still seem to be working ok. Gnna see if Applecare will fix this cosmetic problem. It's the only blemish on an o/w beautiful machine! (Ok, not minding the few oil marks on the screen from the keybd...anyone else using a liner to avoid this? Or am I just OCD about my MB?)

Those oil marks only show up on certain computers; my keys don't touch the screen at all.
Apple should cover the crack though.

Heya

Just so you know the trackpad still works perfectly, apart from the fact I might cut my finger:eek:

DO ANYONE ELES HAVE ISSUES WITH THEIR MACBOOK / PRO GLASS TRACKPAD CRACKING UNDER NORMAL USE ?

please post so i can show the store manager to help my case.

That looks like a finger size crack to me. I dont see why they wouldnt fix it. That would be a weak spot is how it looks to me

more or less on certain fingers. the oil/sweat combination on everyone is different.

if you wipe your face after being sweaty on your track pad. it's going to be oily

Repaired.

After much arguing w/ the "Genius" at the genius bar, "This type of damage can only be done accidentally and is not a design flaw. Our engineers test the macbooks every which way and they know what is and is not accidental damage....yada, yada, bullsh|t," :( I escalated the problem to a manager who tried to tell as well this is from abuse of the macbook.

Thankfully clearer heads prevailed and the manager had engineering look into the problem. I got a phone call back saying they would replace the unibody/touchpad for free while not admitting any systematic problems.
(Apparently it's about $300-$400 to replace the unibody.)

Trackpad Cracked

Same thing happened to me. Took it in to the Apple Store thinking my Apple Care Plan would cover it. I'd only had it for about 4 months. I was told it was not covered and would cost me $600 to repair. I've not had any complaints in the past about the customer service and my satisfaction with the system when something does go awry. That is no longer the case. I'm stuck with a new laptop with a cracked trackpad and Apple is not going to help at all. Sucks for me, huh?

I wouldnt give up without a fight. I showed them this forum and the other case as well. I also explained exactly how I encountered my problem/crack. Literally, got backpack from hotel storage and opened it up and there it was
without any other sign of damage to the mackbook.

Can you post pictures online? I'm curious what ur crack looks like. Did it occur while using the touch pad or what?

Trust me, I dont press anywhere near the middle bottom on my new touchpad!

I went to Mac Store 5th Ave in NY,NY if that helps.

I'm in Indiana and there's only one Apple store in the city. I took the picture from an angle so you can see the little crack on the right. I first noticed a tiny defect (only way I can describe it) at the bottom of the pad. Over the next few days it started to grow into the little crack on the right. I called and was told to take it into the store. Well before I went, I tried to clean it, and it grew into what you see now. At the store they said there is an impact point so they consider it damaged. I know that I didn't damage it. One day I just noticed that it didn't look smooth anymore. That was the beginning of the end.

I could rant on and on about the piss-poor service that store has...

Are you covered by AppleCare? If so, call them.

Yep, it was wonderful with my last MBP. I had several things replaced free of charge over the course of a couple years. I called them first and they sent me to the store. After reading some of these posts, I think I'll give them another call, since I see this is not an isolated event.

Cracked Macbook Trackpad

The glass track pad cracked on my 6-month old uni-body Macbook during normal use--specifically while clicking the lower part of the glass with one finger tip.

Based on what I've experienced and seen so far this is a systematic problem. It looks like there is a weak point in the bottom center of the glass where most of these cracks are happening. Supporting this, the only irregular aspect of my track pad usage was that I clicked almost exclusively at that point in the bottom center. The crack started as a finger tip-shaped downward pointing crescent, and has now spidered all the way to the top of the pad.

I intend to get the track pad fixed while my Macbook is still under warranty (along with the headphone jack which often fails to engage)--but I expect problems as I am currently living in Berlin, Germany, where the customer is presumed guilty until proven innocent.

I am sharing my story in hopes of getting this problem on Apple's customer service radar. If others have the same problem, please speak up.

Hey everyone. I just got my MacBook Pro today and the trackpad had a crack in it within 5 hours! However, unlike the ones seen on the other MacBook Pros, this one is in the top left and happened when I clicked around the upper middle area (normal use just like the other situations). I'd like to get this taken care of by AppleCare (they cover one-day old items right??? :p) but don't know if it would be possible. For now it may be a cosmetic issue but I don't want the crack to continue expanding and reach epic proportions like the previous poster's. I plan on using this forum as evidence of the trackpad's problems and I hope that since I live in Canada, the stereotype of Canadians being very nice people holds true for the employees at the Apple store :D.

As far as I know, Apple immediately swap out products within a 14 day period from when they were bought, no questions asked.

I think the lesson here is to always "Tap to click" and never really click the thing - at least while Apple won't say this is a known issue and offer to fix it for free.

Bull___t, Normal use would not break the trackpad, something would have had to be dropped or hit it hard enough to crack, and i mean hard, it would have to weigh a bit to be able to damage it, it is a user caused error, and it would help people to assist you or suggest fixes if you are honest, but saying it cracked under normal use, that is BS, please do us a favor and tell the truth

A touch of my human finger, Pal. Nothing more. In the picture you can actually see the finger tip shaped crescent where the crack started.

Moreover, I don't have any reason waste my time coming on this forum to lie. I'm mostly resigned to the fact that German Apple is not going to fix this for me--but I'm surprised enough that it happened to say something about it, especially when I see others are having similar problems.

I never expected the track pad to break in-hand, particularly after receiving pre-purchase assurances from misinformed folks like this excited little person here that the glass is indestructible, chiseled by ninjas from unicorn horns, etc. I suppose they are experts on tempering glass and this problem is all in my head. Or maybe Apple just tried to design something too cool too fast.

If anyone else has cracked track pads--due to normal or abnormal use--please post (accurate) info and pictures. I think this is an issue worth knowing about.

The fact that there are a number of them directly over the screw underneath is certainly suspicious. I think you just have to get the right manager. Try try again?

Question: what is the first letter(s) and three digits of your serial number along with the last three digitson your broken MBs? For instance, my PB's number starts with QT336 and ends with N4M. If this is a defective batch of MacBooks and MacBook Pros, then we may have an easier case to present to Apple.

That said, I don't have a Unibody Mac.
