I'm probably just misunderstanding what model is in the video, but my trackpad cracked awhile ago (felt like a grain of sand was under it, cracked because of uneven pressure), and it was my understanding the MacBook Pro (with the internal [non-replaceable] battery) trackpad could only be replaced if you replace the whole upper casing.

My question is: Is the model in the video a Mid-2009 MacBook Pro or later?

The 17" unibody MacBook Pro never had a user-replaceable battery, and since this video applies to 17" unibody MBPs, it stands to reason that it also applies to all mid-2009 (or later) MBPs.

Besides, if you read the text describing the repair procedure, you'll notice this:

If you have a later model Unibody (mid-2009 and later), you will likely need the specialized 5-point torx screwdriver, which we offer here:

So I think it's safe to say that you won't need to replace the whole upper casing of your computer to fix the trackpad.

Just saw this crack on my trackpad. Will call Apple tomorrow the first thing i do.

I noticed that the bottom of my trackpad seemed to be stuck in an "up" position although constantly activated. I applied a little pressure, and the glass snapped. I found another distributor for trackpads here, and I placed an order for a replacement. I hope it works for me.
Follow up. Installation was a bit tricky. A few of the mounting screws on my late 2008 MBP are difficult to reach, and there is a cable that runs to the hard drive which is easy to knock loose. Anyhow, trackpad was replaced. Goes clicky click ... as long as the battery is left out.

Ah HA! This was the root cause of my trouble. The battery has swollen so much that it pushes up on the trackpad, preventing clicks, and at one point causing the glass to crack. Shows how much I use my laptop as a laptop. Too bad Apple ended their battery replacement program in 2009...

Cracked TrackPad "Cheap Fix"

Hi guys, as you my trackpad gave up just two weeks after I got the laptop, did not had the money to buy a new one, and I'm from Dominican Republic and here we don't have apple care, so I came out with a cheap solution: 3M Vinyl Plastic Electrical Tape. My crack is in at the middle zone of the bottom of the trackpad, so I just put some of the electrical tape from side to side and cut the excess of tape with a Gillette Blade. The result is the picture:

PS: The cool thing about this, the sensitivity of the trackpad is the same as if there was no vinyl at all. :)

So, you can find a really wide vinyl tape and use it, or just a thin one like i did to "fix" it.

Hope that this help. :)

Looks pretty nice. Just looks like a separate trackpad button.

Not serious

Seriously did that happen from normal use?

I should be more cautious then

Gjdm for thinking outside of the box

Same here

The glass track pad cracked on my 6-month old uni-body Macbook during normal use--specifically while clicking the lower part of the glass with one finger tip.

Based on what I've experienced and seen so far this is a systematic problem. It looks like there is a weak point in the bottom center of the glass where most of these cracks are happening. Supporting this, the only irregular aspect of my track pad usage was that I clicked almost exclusively at that point in the bottom center. The crack started as a finger tip-shaped downward pointing crescent, and has now spidered all the way to the top of the pad.

I intend to get the track pad fixed while my Macbook is still under warranty (along with the headphone jack which often fails to engage)--but I expect problems as I am currently living in Berlin, Germany, where the customer is presumed guilty until proven innocent.

I am sharing my story in hopes of getting this problem on Apple's customer service radar. If others have the same problem, please speak up.

Almost identical problem here, my crack is almost a mirror image of that. I believe its because the metal frame underneath doesn't cover that part and since its where I click Ive ended up with an identical crack to the one you have. I too click on that part of the trackpad and I believe that may be the cause for it breaking. I live in Bedford outside London so I should be alright in finding a "genius" bar. Also, did you get it fixed under your warranty ? thanks.

Bull___t, Normal use would not break the trackpad, something would have had to be dropped or hit it hard enough to crack, and i mean hard, it would have to weigh a bit to be able to damage it, it is a user caused error, and it would help people to assist you or suggest fixes if you are honest, but saying it cracked under normal use, that is BS, please do us a favor and tell the truth

I dropped my phone about 3 inches above the trackpad and it cracked quite significantly, so saying it would have to be hit "hard" is not the case, mine barely hit it and cracked.

Wait - you dropped your phone onto a piece of glass (yes the trackpad is glass) and expect it not to break?

So apparently I have Hulk fingers and acid arms. It happened near the bottom directly in center like everyone else. What is the consensus about them fixing it? I was cleaning the pad with my shirt because it felt greasy and it cracked
