Except the fact that they don't crack very easily.

In what warped reality does everyone think that glass is so durable? Its extremely resistant to wear. But give it a little torsion and its gets very weak. Think of a bent frame on a car. Usually a rock can smack the window and have no problems. But put a little stress on it and it breaks with little force or impact.

apple denies that track pad crack is a defect

my 7 month old macbook pro cracked very similarly to the ones shown here in the center and spreading out. Apple store says I impacted the trackpad, which i know I did not.

Why Is apple so strongly denying that this could be a defect issue.
Did the others with this problem get a resolution? How?:(

I keep trackpad film over top of mine even though they technically won't accumulate much oil and is durable (since it is glass). Apple's been gearing a lot of their products towards glass multi-touch, so I always assume that the stuff is designed to be tapped and touched constantly and to no end.

The trackpad film, for me, is used with the notion that like moving glass, you put adhesive tape on it to keep it from cracking...

I have 13" and 15" unibody systems... I usually tap a lot more than I click but the 13" feels a bit tighter than the 15"... keyboards and trackpad are definitely tuned different.

Macbook Pro Trackpad Broke!!!

I recently purchased a 13" macbook pro. I thought my touchpad seemed somewhat stiff when I first purchased it but thought that this may be how it was supposed to be. I have had it for about a month and the other day the top left corner seemed to be stuck like something was underneath it. I tried to see if this was the case with the rest of the touchpad and with slight pressure a 1/4" triangular shaped piece cracked off of the upper right hand corner. The piece is still attached to the rest of the pad barely. Is this an issue with the new unibody macbooks? I had been reluctant in switching over to a mac but my music demanded that I make the leap. I love the mac but is the trackpad thing gonna be a major issue? I have spent way too much to deal with defect issues? Has the recently happened to anyone else?

Cracked Trackpad

A couple weeks ago someone took my 17" Macbook Pro out of my room w/o my knowledge. when i got it back i found a crack IN my trackpad that looks similar to symac 's photos accept its on the upper left hand corner. my question is is anyone else's crack under the actual pad. when i run my fingers over it there is no crack, its internal WTH??

I've got an internal crack too, but I've got a smaller actual crack as-well, it happened on my 3 month old Macbook pro 15inch and it happened under normal use, but I got mine from comet and they said they would fix it, so I hope they don't change there mind when I take it in.

Cracked as well

My MBP (of barley a year old) just cracked today. The trakpad is fine, but the glass has a huge crack in it. Does anyone know if the glass is replaceable? As a computer hardware engineer.... I can say that I did nothing wrong to the laptop, nothing out of normal use.

It's a 2009 unibody, with a 2.53 Intel C2D

My 13" trackpad cracked and the guy at the apple store looked at it and was able to tell that it was cracked from the inside. You can clearly tell if it was cracked from pressing or if something fell on it and shattered it. They covered it under AppleCare. But when I got the invoice back, it shouldn't cost more than $150 if they actually have to repair it outside of AppleCare. The trackpad cost $60 and the service is a level 1 repair which was about $90. I heard stories of $600 to repair the trackpad but per my invoice it shouldn't be so.....

I have the same issue i just found out today! and its the same place as everyone else hope my applecare will replace it and mine is the mid 2009 model don't know if its the same as others :/

While I really like how smooth the glass trackpad feels, I am not sure what Apple was thinking by also making it the trackpad button. Common sense tells us that glass will crack with enough pressure and the odds are very high of it happening when it's used as a button.

So our Macbook Pro Unibody has keyboard keys that wear shiny prematurely and glass trackpads that crack, what else can go wrong?

my MBP is just about 1 yr old & I have the crack starting in the lower center, straight up to the top...still works fine, but called Applecare this morning & they directed me to carry it in to a local "authorized service provider"...

when i took it in, the gal at the desk said something fell on it & it probably wouldn't be covered but the tech makes that decision...when the tech came out, he looked & said wow, haven't seen that before...

explained to him nothing fell on it and it cracked with normal use and there are virtually identical looking pictures all over the web of cracked trackpads...

he said they'd cover it & repair it under warranty...they just need to order the part...should be in thursday & only will take him 1/2 hr to repair it...

he mentioned there are 3 screws under the trackpad that can be adjusted...one in the bottom center where my crack began & 2 more on the top about an inch in on each side...

i'm just happy they are covering it under warranty...

my trackpad looks very similar to this one...

It's shame you have to buy Applecare to get it covered under a warranty. Looks like the glass trackpad cost anywhere from $70 to $111, depending on the vendor.

I'm finding more and more people with cracked trackpads, hard to believe they've never seen this issue before.

Screen Crack Happened tonight :\

I sat on my recliner and looked down at my 6 month old trackpad and it was cracked. After considerable thought, I believe I know how it happened.

I believe it happened as a result of how I carried it upstairs. I carried it with one hand with my thumb pressed against the trackpad and my other 4 fingers supporting the bottom of the laptop.

I am out of town now but when I get back in town, I will definitely be taking it back to the apple store to be replaced. I do have the 3 year apple care plan.

I attached a picture.

Not trying to be a jerk, but why would you carry it this way? Its a GLASS trackpad, its not meant to support the weight of the entire machine, especially with all the weight of the machine focused on a such a small spot that your thumb would cover. Next time take the two seconds and close the lid.

Now that I look back that is how I have often carried my various laptops when moving from one place to another close place. i think i do it so my laptop will not go into sleep mode. never had a problem carrying my windows machines this way. i now better now.

I Googled around a little bit and it turns out this is a very easy (and relatively inexpensive) repair. You can get a brand-new trackpad for $70 here and there's a great install video here. I would GLADLY pay $70 and do this repair myself versus walking into the Apple Store and paying through the nose...plus risking additional cosmetic damage to your computer.

Macbook pro cracked trackpad

I was just perusing the internet and i clicked the bottom middle of my trackpad and got an enormous crack, does anyone know if apple ill cover this? I'm still within my warranty.

Apple will probably cover it if it is under warranty. If not, then you get to pay.

As for all of these tragic pictures, I feel for you guys, and I am going to be even more careful with it from now on. Fortunately, you can change the settings so you do not have to click. I much prefer this anyhow.

I noticed that the bottom of my trackpad seemed to be stuck in an "up" position although constantly activated. I applied a little pressure, and the glass snapped. I found another distributor for trackpads here, and I placed an order for a replacement. I hope it works for me.

Cracked Trackpad

My trackpad just cracked yesterday when I was out. Apparently, my cousin put it on the be bed and I didn't know what happened after that. I went to the apple service centre and asked how much was to repair it. They said $320(which was ridiculous) and also had to pay a GST charge of $120. I have a warranty for my macbook so I'm wondering if it can be used.
@MikoMew my is just the opposite direction of yours! :(
EDIT:
Figured out what happened... Book dropped on it...

Fix it yourself for ~$70.

It's effortless in some people...

So, like Steve Jobs said with the iPhone 4 antenna issue, he's not holding it right? How the $$%^^&@ would he know it's a glass trackpad and very fragile??
