...Is the "upgrade kit" just Panther retail or is it just a bare bones CD that I have to install on top of Jaguar?
it isn't retail, just the disc(s). you can do a format and install, but you have to have 10.2 on the volume you intend to install it on first... then it will erase the volume and install OSX.

Are you sure about this? I think otherwise for two reasons:

1. They show the Panther box when you're approved and if they show that it could be misconstrued that that's what you're supposed to receive and they'd have a false advertising claim and I'm sure somebody would file one.

2. The UtD is a promotional savings and not a promotional sale AFAICT. It's supposed to discount the price of the version you'd buy if you haven't bought a mac recently. This leads me to think that they're still going to give you the full retail version but just at a limited cost.

My opinion but no one post that so-and-so told you some BS about blah because it has become more and more evident that no rep for Apple knows a damn thing about what's a. going on and b. going to happen. Quite frankly I'm suprised that they even know about UtD in the first place even though it's existed for quite a while.

Ordered a 12" BTO on Sept 4th. Delayed till Sept 28, recieved on the 2nd of Oct. Just tried it and it took it just fine. You know people keep saying false advertisement this and sueing and what not. No you cant sue, Apple reserves all rights to this, Clarkey is right about that.

Personal note to Clarkey, logic would tell me that theyre actively updating the serial number list seeing people are suddenly getting qualified that werent yesterday. Dont be such a nay-sayer. :)

I encourage people to order away if they qualify, and to keep checking back.

Ordered a 15" BTO on Sept 16th, I've had it for 2 weeks now and love it. Tried various times over the last couple days to get Panther via the Up-to-Date page. It just kept saying my serial # wasn't valid. Well I just tried it again and it went in just fine.

So I say, try, try, again, it worked for me!

Apple and ways of doing business

I have noticed that Apple has a number of doing things.

A common thread is that they do things to prevent many users from doing things. An example is the ipod music folder being invisable.
the reason given is that people have a right to that music. Steve wanted to make it hard for the average user.

What if Apple inteneded to allow people to get the new Kitty Kat who purchased the powerbook all along. Just like a REBATE. Most people do not send in the upgrade rebate form. This means they make another 30+ per package.

So Apple/Steve decide make it there so people really cannot whine about the date. Yes most people do not know about it. Hence the rebate coupon. Most people will buy $129 package and leave the $19 package alone. Hence a $110 more.

amazing!

wow, I tried this last week when it first was annouced for my new AL pbook and it said my serial number wasn't found. I just tried it, and it works! Truely amazing!
I bought this powerbook on 9/16 at like 4am. Woohoo for apple!

..$21.60 for my new kitty..

I don't know if I'd say "fixed" technically it's even more broken because it's letting in even more people that it's not supposed to.

Anyway, I placed my order because my BTO PBook ordered September 22 finally went through as well.

Hey it worked! I had received the "serial number not found" message before but this time everything went through just fine. A 15" 1GHz BTO model. Fantastic! I think our complaints paid off. :)

BTO 12" powerbook
Works for me now! I'm a happy camper. Still debating whether to cancel my educational order that I already placed or to sell it when I get it on eBay. My morals aren't holding me back, but the trouble is. I'm figuring that Apple is probably going to honor this since they added people to the list instead of taking people out.

I think I am keeping my EDU order. I know it's nearly $50 more, but I plan on reformatting and installing case sensitive HFS+ and all and I don't want to have to go through installing 10.2, and then having to install 10.3 on top of that if it is just an "upgrade" and not the actual full retail version. Not to mention, I want that cool black and silver box.

i just qualified for the up-to-date too! i've been trying for the past while and wasn't able to get the update (my serial wasn't in the database). whoever said they're adding more serials to the database everyday is right. just keep trying :)

maybe it takes a while to get the serial number when you register into the database?

oh i should mention the mac i registered with:p

from the apple education store (canada)
BTO 12" PB 1GHZ G4, combo drive
ordered 09/16
received 09/30

registered 10/06
qualified for up to date 10/11

Woohoo, serial works for me now -- BTO PowerBook 15 ordered 16sep.

Powerbook G5:

Why don't you wait until the UtD discs are released before deciding whether or not to get the full retail version? Someone else mentioned in this thread that Apple guaranteed to him in a phone call that the UtD discs *WILL* allow someone to install on a blank HD (or his money back). There's even a (very very) small chance that the UtD discs might be the full boxed thing. Of course, you just might want to support Apple by buying the full thing anyway... which would be cool too! :)

I'm the one who was told this by Apple when I called tech support. However, I am now skeptical about this info, because I had the Mac Genius at the local Apple Store pull up the case notes, and the tech didn't enter anything about my question. The only thing the tech entered was that I asked questions about Panther Up-to-Date and that he answered my questions. If the CD's end up requiring OS X to be on the hard drive, I no longer have proof that he misinfomed me. I don't know why he didn't document the details of our conversation as I had requested, but I can only guess that he was covering his ass in case he was wrong.

Since the program is good until December, I'm going to wait until others receive their CD's to determine if I want to spend the $20 or purchase the academic retail version for $70.

I'd wait, but I am too excited to get my hands on Panther to wait an extra few days to get an up to date disc and find out it's not a full retail version and having to re-order the academic version. I've been as excited over Panther this summer as I had been over the new 15" PowerBooks coming out.

If you PLAN on purchasing Panther after you determine which version you want, then I don't see any problem with getting a copy from someone and installing it first, assuming that you know someone who is purchasing it on the release date. However, if you install a copy and then decide to never buy it, then that would definitely be breaking the law.

Apple needs to get their facts straight and give customers accurate information about the Panther Upgrade CD's. It is simply unaccetable for any manufacturer to not know details about a product they are already taking orders for.

That'd be great if I knew someone who was getting it, but I don't, so it's either get it now for sure or wait to save some money...but it is just so difficult to get myself to wait when I want it as soon as it comes out.

you can also "obtain" it from other "sources"...that's what I did the moment I ordered the Up To Date upgrade. I don't have any moral qualms with that :)

Disclaimer: the following has NO relation whatsoever to illegal means of obtaining Panther, rather it is mindless rambling about nothing, NOTHING AT ALL. Do not pay attention to it: I recommend searching "7B85" on Acquisition. Also try getting the Bittorrent file from Acquistion then using Bittorrent. ;)

On my confirmation email, as well as my Order Status on apple's website, it says under shipping "PM Delivery 10/24" so Im taking that to mean Panther will be on my doorstep come 10/24 barring shipper's error. Anyone care to comment?

I wish I could be that optimistic...even if that were true, it says something about by 8 pm and my school stops accepting packages by 4 pm, so I just hope that doesn't mean that the majority of these orders will be on the later side of the "PM" range.
