If I was in any way deceptive about my order (place in the wrong date, wrong machine, fake serial number) it is MY fault and I have commited fraud.

Apple has verfied through thier system. A date of 9/16 and powerbook G4 should have tripped thier system. But it did not. Apple then sends me a verfication letter they will be shipping.

I am still of the opnion Apple knew exactly what it is doing:
1. Say publicly only systems purchased after Oct 8.

2. Allow anyone who desires who has purchased a powerbook to UTD regardless of the date.

This would make sense as far as business goes. Keeps most everyone happy and more money in the pocket.

I bought my 12" Powerbook on 9/25, and it was accepted for the upgrade. I hope that Apple honors the price. Otherwise, I'm canceling my order and reordering with the educational discount.

BTO Worked

I tried to get the Panther upgrade for my BTO 15" last week and it didn't couldn't find my serial no. . I just tried again last night and it went through. So everyone who didn't get it, try again.

But just by filling out the form you were being deceptive about your order. They clearly stated October 8th, and you chose to fill out the form anyway.

I happen to agree that the whole thing is probably intentional, but it is still possible that it's an error and if so, I still don't think there is any legal requirement for Apple to ship it to us at the upgrade price.

I've been called a fraudster, a cheat, a liar on other forums over this, but I have a clear conscience. Apple has had plenty of opportunity to rectify the qualification issues in their database -- they most certainly know that they're there. If they choose to do so, they could have very easily screened me out on the basis of the "purchase date" field alone -- at no stage did I provide them with any false information. I can only conclude that this has all been intentional on Apple's part.

If Apple choses to cancel my order, then fine by me -- I'll probably shell over the full price for Panther some time in future. Otherwise, I'm not losing any sleep over this.

Think of this another way. He calls Apple and they ask him the questions that the form asked and he answers truthfully, the guy comes back after asking his supervisor about the cutoff date and says yep, you qualify. Where is he being deceptive at all? By the way, don't try to say that this isn't a valid argument because it is. In no way other than it being a computer vs. human is this example different.

I GOT IT!!! WOOOOHHOOOOO!!!

Well, after many calls and complaints, and making sure my system was in fact registered with Apple's database, I was successful in getting my order through.

I am one of the BTO orders that couldn't get through last week. I bought mine on Oct. 4th and received it on Oct 7th @ 3PM EST.

BTO 15" G4 1.25 w/
1 - 512MB SO-DIMM
5400RPM Drive
80GB HDD

I guess the BTO theory is out the window, unless of course they just got sick of me calling.

At the Up to Date site, I put in:

Oct 4, Serial#, Apple Online Store, Apple Online Store, CA...

I fail to see how filling out the form with the correct information is decietful. The process should be automatic on their part. The serial number should have a registration date associated with it, and there is a purchase date box. There is no deciet in seeing if you qualify. Those who bought G5s before the 8th qualify, why shouldn't some one who spent as much on a new powerbook qualify.

Again, it's rediculous to think that this action is decietful.

You fill out a form, tell the TRUTH, and you are... DECEITFUL????

C'mon man. What they DO with the truth is on THEIR conscience, no ours.

Consider dead horse thoroughly beaten...

I spoke with my MIS professor about this, and she thinks it's intentional. Apple says that they have a cutoff date of October 8, but the real cutoff is earlier than that (and secret), so we get to qualify anyway. She says it's a relatively common practice--for instance, the top ten grade-earning individuals in her class actually consist of 12 people because the other 2 are so close to the top 10 that they might as well be counted. So there you have it.

i just verified my powerbook purchased on 9/22 and qualified for the $19.99 upgrade to Panther with free shipping. I entered the serial number, my purchase date and the name of my school's computer store and had no problem with the verification system. My system is the BTO 1.25GHz 15" PB version. I got it along with the 10GB iPod and HP Printer under educational discount and the $300 rebate deal....incidentally, does anyone know what does Mac OS 10.3 Gold master (7b85) mean???

"Gold Master", or "GM" means the very final version of the software that will be distributed. "7B85" is the build number, in this case the build number of the GM release (I think/hope since I already installed it...)

Apparently I qualify

Hey all,

To go back to something that was mentioned earlier - whether if you ordered your AlBook ages ago and still haven't received it, here's what happened to me:

I decided to call the nice people at the Apple Online Education Store (UK) this morning. I explained to them that I ordered my AlBook on 16th Sept, but due to delays in getting the parts for my BTO spec, I still haven't received it. I also haven't yet received an order confirmation (although they told me over the phone when I rung that my order had been confirmed and would be shipping shortly). At first the phone operator said I wasn't eligible for the Panther upgrade, simply because I ordered before Oct 8th.

I went on to explain how 'ordering' and 'purchasing' are not the same thing, and that the terms of the upgrade clearly say that AlBooks 'purchased' on or after 8th Oct can get the upgrade and as far as I knew, up until I called to check, they hadn't confirmed my purchase with me. The lady on the line then checked with her supervisor, who said I was elilgible!

The phone operator then proceeded to walk me through getting my Panther upgrade online (I have already looked at the site, know how it works and know that you need to have your machine before you can order the upgrade). When she realised this she told me I would have to wait until my machine arrives to order it (duh!)

The moral of this story? - Try and find someone who knows what they are talking about before you give up....and don't believe the first thing they tell you!

dude, you probably could have gotten it anyway, most of us have even though we ordered and in most cases received our PowerBooks before October 8.

So people, WHAT DO I DO?
ordered 09/18 and received 10/08, charged 10/08.
STILL DOESN'T qualify. Should I call them up?
Anyone?

PANTHER UPDATE CD

Just spoke with Apple and verified that the Update CD will be the same as the Panther "full version". Basically, there is just ONE version. no difference between update and the other one.

Secondly, nope, Apple still wouldnt' give it to me even though my computer was received on the 8th. They claim that the money transaction took place on the 6th. argh...even then...

Awesome! Great news! I hope it comes with all 4 CDs (3 install CDs plus 1 Xcode CD...I think)

Hmm, thats crappy. I suggest you don't accept no as an answer. It seems the Up To Date page validated most of us, why not you? You did try entering your serial number and stuff, right...?

glad to hear that lots more people are getting the up to date offer now.

i just went and did it again, it worked this time. so now i've ordered it and i purchased my PB on the 26th of September!

i'm hoping that it still comes through, but if it does, i'll be feeling sorry for all the others that purchased theirs after me and still can't get the deal. :(

also glad to hear that UtD is the full version of Panther. i wouldn't pay just for an 'upgrade'.

iMac Up-to-date

Just wanted to let people know that I successfully qualified my 17" iMac 1.25 tonight, purchased on the 19th of September. Oddly enough, the serial number did not match when I chose "The new iMac" as my computer type, but rather just "iMac." Bizzare.

It looks like Apple may just be qualifying all purchases of recently updated systems. Any iBooks out there qualify?

Yup, CD 1 and CD 2 are approximatly 630MB, and CD 3 is about 215MB, i believe. Still looking for Xcode GM...

FCP is on a DVD, so why not? Also, with Jaguar you can cut out nearly a gig of bloat (extra language support) by 'configuring' the clean install and opting out. (A trick I read about in 'The Missing Manual" A must read for some great info - and fun, too.) I imagine the same will be tru for Panther.

And for those who qualified for the UTD, it'll ARRIVE at my doorstep on the 24th? Is that right? no matter what I picked for shipping (which they've taken off btw)?

Why not? Because not every computer that supports Panther has a DVD drive (numerous older models, plus current low end iBook and eMac, XServe).

FCP4 is on a DVD because nearly every computer that supports it has a DVD drive...in fact obviously for a computer to support FCP4 it MUST have a DVD drive

It would be nice if they offered a single DVD as an option, or standard with models that DO include DVD drives.

As a side benefit (for Apple) it would reduce piracy a bit.

I think Apple is smart to put Apps on DVDs. Panther should be, it is big. iLife was, so everything else should be. Almost all Macs have at least a DVD-ROM or Combo Drive now. I think it will all be on DVDs in about 2 or 3 years. Depends on what Apple decides to do with the next OS and what Macs would work with it. :p
