lol, well I'm 20, and keep in mind that I'm on a phone, and slightly worried that the computer I just bought is completely bust. I think a slight flaw in grammar is acceptable...
Many thanks everyone, this has actually happened to me before (water leaked through my bag) so I know what happens when it's left on. I won't sue my mum lol.

I wasn't insulting you, this just reeked of a thread started by a 12 year old in a predicament. Sorry!

Definitely leave it turned off for a week at least. Maybe if you're brave enough you could try opening it up and cleaning it further, but definitely OFF FOR A WEEK!
Seriously if the computer ends up being broken your mom owes you big time. Maybe you can get your dad to help you out with buying a new one.

Not sure if this was mentioned by put it in a giant bowl with rice and cover it with rice. Apparently Apple loves Asian by making rice absorb everything.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so defensive. Probably the reason why my mum threw milk all over my computer lol.

I am a bit scared to open it up, it looks really delicate inside last time I saw, I wouldn't dare touch it. Besides I can't get the damn screws off just now, they're so tiny o_O
But how should I go about cleaning it? I'm very unfamiliar with doing such a task.

Oh and you guys are flying ahead of me. Every time a make a new post there's 5 new ones! So thanks in advance ;)

i'd knock somebodies heads off if they intentionally damaged my hardware I didn't get this crap for free I work hard for my toys...

sorry what...

oh...

leave it off, take it apart, get some contact cleaner or electronics alcohol (isopropyl alcohol 99.999999% not the low grade drug store crap) and apply liberally. Oh and if you had any serious data on your hard drive, take the drive out now and make sure it isn't damaged.

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, I tried yahoo answers but haven't received any responses yet.
After an argument my mum threw a glass of milk on the keyboard while it was on. I turned it off as fast as I could, everything looked ok before it shut down. I turned it over and wiped off all the liquid. It's open, face down on my bed just now. Should I turn it on to see if it's ok, it's been 1 hour now?\
It's a 13" MacBook Pro, 2.4Ghz
what a bitch...
Well, there's no point crying over spilt milk...

Sorry, had to.

But yes, as everyone else has said, leave it to dry for a week and see. Hopefully you had nothing TOO important on it.
milk would not affect the hard drive dude
How old are you? I would consider finding a lawyer and suing her.
definitely would consider this
That's awful advice.
no its not. people sue their parents all the time. she intentionally spilt liquid on and possibly destroyed his computer. i would sue anybody who did that to me

you should definitely sue her
Lots of kids hate their parents when they are young. A lifetime of hate doesn't equal a computer. Get over it.
she already cheated on his dad...in my book that equals a lifetime of hate by itself. destroying his computer is just adding fuel to the fire.
and why would suing someone make them hate you? if they were legitimately wrong, why wouldnt they man up and say they were wrong and get on with their lives?

and you should wash it out with alcohol, then distilled water, then let it sit in rice for a week or so

I mention this... It actually is what all companies do to absorb water. I've done it for all my cell phones for me and my friends. Works every time. Rice absorbs water faster and more than air.

Ok until I can get it open I've got a big tub of rice. But should I keep the computer upside down or does it matter? It'll only fit upright.

I'll get some stuff tomorrow to clean it, I hope it'll be ok by then.

Clean it tomorrow then DO NOT turn it on until about Friday! Please keep us updated

Why not? It is a sensitive electronic part, and if a liquid is spilt on it, it will most likely be non-functioning. With that said, if the milk did not seep in enough to touch the hard drive, the OP should be fine...

cuz he turned it off immediately. if there is no electricity going to it, it cant get damaged. he just needs to rinse it off just like the rest of the computer. people over estimate how vulnerable electronics are to liquids. as long as he turns it off and then clean it more likely than not it will be fine.

DO NOT TURN THE COMPUTER BACK ON DO NOT
That aside, you must remove the battery if possible, please let it dry for 5-7 days if you want even the slightest chance of it to work. Do your best to clean off all the milk

this the longer the better but after 5 days it should be dry enough to use!!!

As long as it is covered it should be fine. Also, have some under it.

If there is milk residue on the hard drive platters, then the heads cannot read the data off of the platters. When referring to HDD's, the presence of electricity doesn't matter. If there is a residue on the hard drive platters, then the heads will report bad sectors, which will in turn cause the drive to fail. End of story.

Even if you rinse it off, the water will remain inside the drive for long enough to grow mold. Hard drives are designed to let almost no air in. There is a dust filter on the hard drive, to prevent dust from getting in. If air can barely get in, and can barely get out, how can water get out?

You are wrong I believe, do you know how well sealed HDD are? Not one spec of dust can get in there

Leave it off. Buy a screw driver kit. Philips 00 and a Torx T6, and a Tri-Wing screw driver. Go to a store like RadioShack to get them or find a way to get them. Remove the logic board, and using 90% Rubbing Alcohol, clean any traces of milk off the logic board. and let it sit for a few days.

Like I said, remove every thing inside and clean them. For the battery, you need a tri-wing screw driver.

if there are holes in the hdd wounld the water and alcohol get in there too thus cleaning the platters? and then when you put it in the rice for a week all the liquid should come out and leave behind a clean hdd.

there are air holes in the hdds. or so ive heard, ive never seen one. in fact i literally just took one of the hard drives out of my computer and searched but i found nothing but screw holes.

i would still recommend cloning that drive and replacing it though just in case.

fixed:D

Well I've left it in rice for tonight. I'll keep this updated incase anyone else experiences similar problems, even with crazy parents lol.

I'm actually not too worried about the hard drive, since everything's backed up. Also, when I took my last broken model to apple, they revealed that the hd and the battery were ok because they were sealed off from the logic board. However that was an aluminium MacBook, you could eject the battery and hd easily, which on the pro you have to unscrew the back. So I'm not sure if it's too different inside.

I would remove the logic board. At least remove the bottom panel and disconnect the battery connector. There is still electricity flowing through.

what a bitch...

Oh, now you're using that word after you found out that it's wasn't censored in a post I wrote? You said yourself that it is like the second worst thing you can call a woman and now you call the OP's mom that? Very rude and out of line of you, period. Whatever the OP wants to say about his mom is up to him but for YOU to say this is completely out of line and hypocritical to say the least.

knew that was gonna come back to haunt me. and i said it was the second worst thing to call a woman (and i only said that to point out that it should be censored, well nothing should be censored but if things are going to be censored that should be one of them) , not that i wouldnt call someone that. but i love how your trying to be my parent or sumthin and tell me how out of line i am. some people would find that very rude and out of line, including me. who's the hypocrite now?

we're all hypocrites so maybe we should stop pointing it out and get over it.
