Only because the console manufacturers want it that way. They obviously could run general computing apps as well.

Who's interested in buying a Switch so that they can do email and spreadsheets? What devs are wasting their resources writing such apps that would see essentially no use? 😂

Some of this stuff is seriously reaching. Try not to sprain something.

You're right, they aren't similar. New consoles are typically from the ground up affairs. These days new iPhones are simply iterations involving modest improvements to what's already there. What amazing new stuff did we get in the 15 Pro that wasn't in the 14 Pro?
The neural engine in the A17 Pro is twice as fast. 35 trillion operations per second vs. 17 trillion. The GPU is 20% faster and more energy efficient. 3 nm chip process versus 4 nm. For comparison, the newly updated PS5 Slim is using 6 nm.

From Tech Crunch:

Article 6(12) of the DMA states:

So Apple will need to make the case that the structure it’s devised here is “fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory” if it’s to avoid falling foul of the DMA.

Like I said, they'll have to fight for it I'm sure.

But this only applies to the App Store, not other application stores.

Then explain what the point of the original post I responded to was?

If the EU says it's fine under the DMA then they have no legal route. The whole thing is market cap based. Over the cap, the DMA applies. So approval under the DMA = no court challenges. That was the point of legislating the DMA. Apple wasn't really violating any laws which is why no one had much success suing in court. I guess you could go to court to try and say the DMA itself is somehow illegal.

DMA is a law. This is Apple's (IMO brilliant) way of complying with the law.

It is likely that compenies like Spotify will sue Apple - arguing that Apple's new agreement is not following the law. In the end of the day, courts will resolve if this is compatible with DMA. If it is, there will be another round of lobbying to adjust the law to push Apple do what the lobbying companies want (make everything free for them).

Games consoles are a much smaller business though with loss-margins on hardware.
So the EU is being selective in who they go after and harm then? They preach the concept of choice but don't really stand behind that? I've mentioned before, I can't install apps from alternate app stores on my TV, Car, Smart home speaker, Game console.

Apple is in the business of selling hardware as well let's not forget. And Microsoft and Sony are just as large as Apple when it comes to being "gate keepers". That's a key word in all their language, Microsoft has already said they will have an App Store for the iPhone. They are getting the best out of this, they can have an App Store on iPhone but others like EPIC or whomever can't have an App Store on the Xbox? If we are going all in on "choice" let's go all in let's not dance around it and say Gate keepers only exist on phones where a market place is some new concept. It was on my Xbox as long as the iPhone has been around if not longer.

Apple should just have EU only devices updated every 5 years, including software updates.
As if that wouldn‘t make their shareholders angry.
Only because the console manufacturers want it that way. They obviously could run general computing apps as well.
I look forward to using VS Code on a gaming console. I‘m sure that can work! Somehow.
Apple should raise all device prices in the EU by 100%
And they shouldn‘t act suprised if they can‘t make money there.
Apple should never release a new device or feature in the EU again.
Haha

Sony has no market dominance or relevant market share in a market that is dominating.
Microsoft is being watched as well, they are however not infringing on free market practices or choking competition.

Because of government intervention, Government users will have more freedom to do what they want to do with their iPhones than North American users. Funny how that works. :(

That does not go far enough. After you buy an iPhone, it should not be Apple's business what you do with it. They should not require an Apple ID or even track what apps you install. The same is true for Android though.

Why this "notarization"? A notary is someone independent and not an Apple employee.

If Apple continues on this path, the EU might force Apple to give users the option to replace iOS with Android :)

Apple seems absolutely dead set on ****ing around to find out to the point that this may literally happen. They have been so flagrant in their hostility towards all compliance that they are going to find themselves hit with strict, tightly worded regulations that are really going to take away the control they are trying so desperately to keep.

Can't wait for it to come to the US, where we can look forward to removing side-loaded apps and malware from our parents' phones, and trying to figure out all of the charges on their credit card bills.

EU, you got played.
If you have kids better block buying apps now.

That’s why they need to pull out of the EU to avoid this extortion

I think Apple is limiting how these changes work to the EU until iOS 18.0, which will have a MUCH more radical system level change with vastly better integration of third party app stores, app sideloading, NFC payment changes, integration of GSMA-compliant RCS text messaging, and so on. That way, these changes can be safely implemented worldwide.

Exactly. They should pull out the EU due to this extortion

I repeat myself. Apple isn't that dumb.

They could get sued into the stone age by investors for even suggesting such a thing. When you're a public company, you play by investor rules.

I'd rather they just open up the platform for everyone. It's been my wish and request since I first got an iPhone in 2008.

Just for reference, I believe its the standard cut that game consoles demand for games in their stores.
Indeed, people that think this is scam are in general completely clueless about what the rest of the digital market looks like. They just know about the Apple AppStore and believe that it is the only digital store in existence.
That , or they have vested interests ( Tencent/Spotify/Epic shills and PR managers , and they have entire internet armies for that)

I don’t need to repeat myself. You can buy an android instead of hurting what we already have a like so the 3% can be happy.
