I have read that there is cooler water between Rita and Galveston, which should slow this thing down. Let's hope it gets down to a 2 or 3 before landfall -- that will make a huge difference.

Well, here is my prediction. Going into Lake Charles or Lafayette.

It is going to be very bad here.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEW MAP!?

HOLY CRAP, ALL OF HOUSTON IS DEAD.

ARRGGGHHHH

I was so looking forward to a senior recital!

Rita is starting to weaken rapidly...it'll still be a big one, but not Category 5. Pressure is up to 913 mb as the eyewall begins to crumble.

Not all dead! We're still here :)

Just got back from Kroger, very crowded but not out of control. (BTW they close at 5:00 if you live around 59 @ Buffalo)

We planned on heading out today or tomorrow morning, but if we left now we would just be stuck out of gas somewhere on 45 North. Hopefull the contra-flow thing using both sided of the freeway going North works, and we can get out of here.

According to the NHC, it's pretty much beyond its point of strengthening and may even degrade to a Cat. 3 before making landfall. Still nothing to be complacent about, and everyone probably remembers Charley last year...it was much more powerful when it hit than anyone expected it to be (note the earlier video).

Its track is also moving closer to Louisiana.

Question-- how do I board up windows that are surrounded by brick?!?!

AGH!

and do I use nails or screws when I board windows surrounded by wood?

I'VE NEVER BEEN THROUGH A HURRICANE BEFORE, I HATE BEING A N00B!

Grrrr

Check out this article. To summarize, you'll want to cut pieces of wood that EXACTLY fit over the windows. You want screw to the wooden frame of the window.

My windows don't have wooden frames!

Oh well, I just see if those little hurricane clips things are still at home depot.

AGGHHH!!

Stupid weather!

I'm looking at the current satellite loops and it looks to me like it's getting stronger again. The eye is better organized now than it was 2 hours ago. Next public advisory due in a few minutes. Should be interesting. I hope I'm wrong :(

*laughs out loud* That is hilarious Katie, love the message on the plywood! On a serious note, I hope you are safe and sound through Rita and if you can get to a network connection, post and let us all know how you are doing... :)

It is my duty to steal WIFI from my neighbors with a generator. :) :D

There's a potential problem according to local news. If the hurricane moves towards Galveston, it will travel over mostly colder water, which will cause it too weaken. If it moves to Louisiana, however, the water almost to coastline remains fairly warm, which would be favorable to sustain or even strengthen Rita.
