It appears there's some kind of language bug that I've got, everything displays like this:

That's how Microsoft tests that their programs are UNICODE compatible. They replace all the strings with UNICODE L33TSP34K and run it like that.

I don't know if it can be disabled, though.

In all seriousness, has anyone else got this problem? /have they found a way to remove it... It's very annoying, I want to test out the app, but not if it's going to be like this....

We better see this within the next month or so. I really can't be bothered loading up Parallels Desktop just to video chat with my buddies, who all use MSN.

is the display picture bug fixed? where you could only see certain ppls display pictures but not others?

wow. I mean, i just spent 3 days trying to get msn messenger work with isight. In south america msn messenger is very popular. I have a lot of family over their and now that i have it working, i am looking foward to having video chats with them.

NOW, that i read this.. MAN!! I mean, we were just talking about this today at work. I said "man it took days for me to get it to work, now watch them release MSN messenger with video for mac" ANd here they go.

I felt bad having windows on my computer. I never felt i needed window ever again... well i actually don't but just for 2 apps. If they get messenger mac working well with mac, then i guess i'll be ok. I'll still use windows for one more app. Even though mac does it, windows does it in one step and not two.

Well we'll see how the beta goes.

i take it you havent heard of Parallels lol?? if the other program you say isnt very CPU intensive, you wouldnt even have to restart :p

aMSN does video chat for Mac.

I guess it still doesn't support offline messaging, have to wait 3 more years for that, right?

I found a little trick on that.. you can't send a message while the other contact is disconnected! but if he/she is invisible they talk to you and you receive the message and can send it back.. you can do the same if you're invisible..

Idiot way to do it haha

amsn!

I gave up on the msn messenger for mac after about a month i looked around for carious versions but got fed up not being able to group conversations and having audio or video, but i found amsn which is amazing i've been using it for abour 6 months now its been perfect you can use video but there is no audio, you can group conversations and also use your own themes/skins for it, also has all the status such as appear offline etc with plugins (opensource).
It's mainly a program designed for linux but obviously with mac being unix it has been made for mac too, i advise giving up on microsoft messenger and go for amsn!
I wont post a link as someone previously stated its pointless and plus they're watching!! =S
I have tried adium for anyone that mentions it and well it just wasn't nearly as good.

hhmm see my experience is different, i only use aMSN if i HAVE to use video.. otherwise i cant stand it, its interface is pathetic!!! adium is so much better and customisable. but anyway, whatever floats it.

I advise staying away from aMSN as it has probably the UGLIEST UI in the world, even with the skins, there are still problems.

Also it's extremely laggy and chokes up quite a bit.

Really! unlucky for you but i personally i have never experienced any lag or anything like that, but i have with Microsoft messenger.
Plus i find the UI the best there are some which are awful but, for anyone who hasn't tried it yet its worth trying all the different ones.

Adium

I decided to give adium a go, but my friends are complaining that they keep getting advertisments or random messages which i'm not sending do any of you adium users get this?

im just waiting till Adium gets video/audio chat up for both aim and msn messenger in the future soon. so i can talk with the family and friends far far away

Well the "future" part is probably right, not so sure about "soon". :D

Last i heard libpurple had some very basic Jingle (that's XMPP/Jabber) audio/video support but that was it. I'm not sure if it's been worked on in recent months.

What i'd like to see is Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL, etc abandon their own native clients and work on plugins for Adium that gives it functionality on a par with the Windows versions of their clients.

Of course i know that at least Microsoft wont do this currently due to their thoughts on the "viral" nature of the GPL. But if Adium were to get a stable plugin system licensed under the LGPL it would allow the big companies to release plugins under whatever proprietary license they like.

A pipe-dream, i know, although not as big a one as my ideal situation (all the walled-garden networks abandoning their proprietary networks in favour of XMPP).

 You got some pretty low expectations then. But of course, I shouldn't be surprised, I've encountered people with worse taste (I'm referring to the people that customize their iPhone's UI beyond ugly).

Oops I created a thread for this without noticing this one.>< Anyway... so far I've noticed:

-CPU HOG! Completely maxes out both cores for some unknown reason
-Fairly stable, no crashes yet. Froze once when trying to quit normally.
-Can't seem to view conversation histories. The window comes up, but nothing is clickable, not even the close button. Have to Command-W out.
-Audio-Video is nice but...
1)Only works 2-way, from what I've been able to figure out. That is, I can't simply view somebody's webcam without them seeing mine and they can't see mine without me seeing theirs.
2)When a friend using WIndows Live Messenger tries to send their webcam to me, I don't even get a message about it. It seems I have to initiate it.
3)Whenever I start using the A/V, my status automatically changes to (In A Call) which is annoying.
-There are some audio bugs (sometimes I get a simple error noise or no noise when receiving a message)
-There are some simple visual bugs (sometimes the little alert boxes are clear, making them hard to read)

I look forward to a public beta where I can actually submit my concerns/bug reports. I'm enjoying it so far though.:) Better than using aMSN for video.
