Just downloaded it myself.

A few notes:
-No preferences for video (e.g. resolution, max bandwidth.)
-Interface is the same.
-Doesn't show history.
-Message history windows isn't clickable.
-Despite this, it still saves history fine.
-Still takes a few seconds for contacts to be unblocked.
-Signs out and quits without trouble.
-Video calls don't work 100% of the time, sometimes you have to try it a second time. This happens with the latest Windows version, too.

-No winks or nudges (thankfully, I hate them.)
-Seems stable (for general use. Haven't tried video yet.)

Using <1% of CPU and 48MB of RAM while idle with chat windows open.

All of which, is good reason to wait for the finished product. ;)

Webcam function seems very temperamental. Keep getting lots of messages saying that the other person's version of MSN does not support webcam.

Has a dock indicator saying how many messages you have unread, but it doesn't go up from 1.

Hasn't crashed yet.

I like how people are ranting and raving that it's so buggy, it's not even a public beta yet... By the time it's a public beta most of the big bugs would've been worked out, this is a private beta, there's a difference, and for good reason.

I think we should appreciate the fact that they're working on new features.

Im glad that video chat is finally coming to work on the mac version.

My friends don't have AIM or other stuff, it's hotmail or bust. So MSN for me was always the way to go. I have used Adium but have always liked MSN for some reason. But now I'll get video and audio chat natively on OSX. I'm so happy.

UPDATE: seems it won't let me install on my G4. Darn.

Yep.. it's Intel only

I just got an "alert" linking me to the windows live messenger site about photo sharing. This alert thing is completely new to Mac messenger.:) It caught me off guard since I've had 8.0 installed for some time and it just popped up today.:p

web cam / video

i have msn messenger on my iMac, and i have the built in web cam,
but msn wont let me do a video conversation / web cam,
is this just my computer, of the version of msn i have or does mac not allow this application to work? im so confused.

Messenger for Mac doesn't yet come standard with audio/visual capabilities. You can test it out if you want by getting the Messenger 8 beta, but sorry I can't post a link here. You could also check out a third party solution such as Adium. =)

so what ever happened to this?
For some reason I can't check the microsoft mac website and google has nothing except articles talking about the leak, which leads me to believe version 8 is not anywhere near a public release, but I wanted to see here.

I think Microsoft is fooling around with us saying that v8 would come "early 2009"

Yeah.. getting a bit of a joke now. I find it pathetic really..

Next thing, it'll only be part of MS Office for Mac and not free..

I wouldn't even be opposed to that. I absolutely love Messenger for Mac. It's so lightweight and clean compared to the bloated, rancid, ad-ridden Windows version. As long as the look and feel stay the same on the Mac they can throw it in to Office if they want.

i used to use it many moons ago, but since finding adium i will never turn back. i cant stand it - especially since i was using the PPC version (no intel version existed, does one exist yet??). i have heaps of multiple accounts so adium makes it so simple to combine them all in one, i just wish there was audio/video chat!

I think I would like Adium if it were specifically for MSN. I can't be bothered with all these programs that combine lots of different systems into one, considering as I only use MSN and only ever have used it. I'm also not fussed on how it doesn't have a native OSX interface. But I do have many friends who like it and it suits them well.
I also think that it would be better if Messenger included Audio/Video chat. It's not something I use regularly, but when I do need it, it's sorely missed. However, we have been promised (ok, we were promised before) that it's coming in the next release, so fingers crossed!
