Here's MS Messenger 8 beta

I think I would like Adium if it were specifically for MSN. I can't be bothered with all these programs that combine lots of different systems into one, considering as I only use MSN and only ever have used it.

tbh i feel that this statement is just a lame excuse to try to make your vague point. no offense or anything intended of course, but the experience from adium is much much better then that of microsoft MSN for mac. you can customise basically every aspect of it, and the results pay off when you get into it...

I'm also not fussed on how it doesn't have a native OSX interface. But I do have many friends who like it and it suits them well.

i am, microsoft have this extremely wierd theme/layout for their mac products (office, msn etc) and i dont like it.. if your not fussed then meh i guess.

whats your opinion on the speed?

I also think that it would be better if Messenger included Audio/Video chat. It's not something I use regularly, but when I do need it, it's sorely missed. However, we have been promised (ok, we were promised before) that it's coming in the next release, so fingers crossed!

yea i miss it too, i doubt it will work very well if they implement it...

I think its about time we received a mac msn update, The one we have at the moment is quite poor, We need the ability have webcam chats. And friends cant see what music Im playing "how dissapointing" :)

But I hope we have this soon

Hypocrites.

Dispising Microsoft with hateful comments and Apple fanboyism yet complaining about the delays in the release of MSN 8 ?

That's bad, guys. I love my Mac but come on, get a gripe of reality. Obviously Microsoft does not concentrate on MSN for mac as it is free software with a relatively small (yet I agree expanding) market. Give them the time.

I was interested in this until I loaded Skype on my Mac and my dad did on his PC and it works better than Messenger ever did on my PC when I had it and we were PC to PC.

They posted a blog in 2008 stating their goal in 2009 is to have a 8 "beta".

It takes them a whole year to develop a beta software.

well they are quickly running out of time.. it will more likely be an alpha!

Messenger 7 is a universal binary.

ahh great to hear! still wouldnt use it :p (i take it MS7 came out when the Universal Binary of MS:Office came out??)

Does anyone even know how big the dev team is for the Mac BU? Cause I mean, it sounds like it's just 1 guy...

video is working great on this version, but not file transfers, it doesn't work when trying to send pics or any other files to a windows vista PC running their latest MSN version which I think is 11....

In total, we're currently ~220 people. That's an all-inclusive deal: development, test, program management, user experience (that's me!), technical writing, marketing, senior management, internal infrastructure, etc etc etc.

I can't tell you how many people are working on a given application, nor can I tell you how many people there are in any given discipline. That's apparently confidential information. I believe that we're still the largest all-Mac development shop outside of Apple themselves (the other contender would be Adobe, as I recall), and we're the oldest. We've got one guy on the team who's been with us since PowerPoint v1 (he's got nearly 25 years with us), and we've got several around the halls who've been here for 15+ years.

Getting Messenger out to beta doesn't just depend on the MacBU team. The Live Messenger team is using a new video codec on the backend. Amongst our other dependencies, we need the green-light from them to go out. For those of you who are in corporate environments using Office Communicator Server (OCS), the codec that Live Messenger is using is the same codec that OCS is using. We've supported audio/video chats on OCS since Messenger 7, and the experience for using the Live Messenger backend should be the same when we hit beta for Messenger 8.

I don't have a date to share yet for the Messenger 8 beta. The second that I do ... well, I'd say that I'll post here, but I bet that someone will beat me to it. :) We'll announce it on Mac Mojo, our team blog.

Regards,
Nadyne.

thanks heaps for that information!!

forgive me for my abruptness, but why are you not working in parallel for the new video codec to be developed?? seems really silly to me that you have to wait for the windows implementation to be developed further so that you can continue to develop the mac version, shouldnt that be hand in hand?? its just making us wait longer for a product that should have been implemented years ago.

I get it that obviously Office for Mac must take up a large amount of devs, pushing out updates etc etc, but still, MSN8 is turning into the duke nukem of IM clients...

I wish you guys all the best and I get that it's not exactly an easy task, but I'm just saying, you've been beaten to the punch a long time ago by a much much smaller dev team (aMSN, Mercury) and it seems like we're still going to be waiting well into 2010 for this...

Anyway, all the best, keep up the good work, give me a good reason to switch from Adium ;)

We are working in parallel with them, but one of our dependencies is still that we need the green-light from them to go ahead with our beta.

Okay, I admit, you actually made me LOL at this. Thankfully I'm working at home today so only the cat thinks I'm crazy. :)

It's great to have at least a little insight into the process, so thank you nadyne. I'm using the leaked version, and I crave a full-featured Mac Messenger 8. With file transfers... display pictures and more options.:p

Nadyne, really, is it so hard to release some 7.x update to enable offline messaging? (Almost) Every single MSN-compatible IM client out there has it. Yes, I'm currently using Adium but I really like MSN For Mac's design.

BTW:Will v 8 include that feature? Or shall I just stop dreaming?

Exactly my thoughts.
