If you think the 8 looks better than the 12, I don't know what to say. :)

The 8 does look better than the 12. The camera on the back looks better, the back is more uniform in design, and most importantly there is no notch to break up the viewing of the screen.

I’m not preordering this time but in the spring, after I make sure there’s no surprise mid year color release, I’m getting a 13 mini. (Trade in my green 12 mini). I can’t wait for the color rumors. I hope there’s more purple. Orange. Bright pink, bright blue. Another nice green.

I’m not upgrading this year neither, unless Apple come out with a Rose Gold version which I highly doubt they will.

Nothing overly exciting - I might just grab a 12 at a reduced price instead — unless something really blows me away.

Coming from an 8-plus either will be a significant upgrade.

Judging by the comments, it sounds like I'm in the minority for being perfectly OK with incremental improvements. I'll be upgrading from an 8 plus. To be honest I'm basically happy with all the features and software on my phone, so year-on-year improvements for the fundamental features like the camera, a smaller notch, battery life, processors, and hardware for 5g are the most important qualities in an upgrade for me. All I'm unhappy about is no touch ID.

And I don't want a flip phone. Every other possible feature seems like an extra just to set one company apart from the others, but not a feature that would change my life. Maybe I lack imagination 😁

Uh, what? Of course they will.
do you have a 12 pro and a Qi charger? on mine, the camera bump is already at a size where the lip of the charger would sit right at the edge of the lens bump. moving the bump onto the charger would misalign the phone and fail to charge.

Lazy, uninspired aesthetic and design. Truly awful - and I know the saying gets passed around often, but Steve Jobs would never have allowed this to hit the market.

From the multiple lenses, to the large camera bump itself, to even the notch, it’s all ugly and all horrible lazy design. It’d never hit production under Jobs, much less used for several years. I can’t wait until Apple designs something truly stunning again. If they ever do.
Jobs paved the way to have S models that were identical physically in just about every way from their predecessor. That is the lazy way.

Didn't Jobs let the iPhone 4 slip right past him? Then blame the consumer for holding it wrong?
If Jobs was around I can guarantee we would be lucky to see a 4.5 inch display as we he was against increasing the screen size. Be thankful for what we have and move on. Buy it or don't buy it. It is not going to be a life altering decision if you skip a year or two of releases. The more people that do so will teach Apple to listen to the customer.

No Touch ID = No Upgrade. Am I the only one with Face ID that does not work with mask or sunlight or backlight or low light? It is useless in day to day use.
I do not have a problem with the device not unlocking in sunlight or lowlight. I have an Apple Watch and it unlocks fine with a mask. However, since being vaccinated and not required to wear a mask at this point, I have no issue with FaceID. It is working just like it always did prior to pandemic.

The only reason I'm excited is that I can upgrade from my 8 to 12 at a lower price

Not much change? They seem to increase the lenses in size and the battery capacity again which is quite a change from my view and a right one.
This generation being the "tok" iteration post all the covid chaos and rushed deadlines looks nice and perfect and ironed out. I'm due for some update and will very likely go for some 13 nonpro. I had eyed a mini but not anymore.

Other companies have shown that there are a lot more you can do.
Seriously, I don’t need a Galaxy fold or a Flip. Its not really doing anything that I can’t already do on my 5.8 candy bar size iPhone. Seriously, do you need a fold for email, posting MR or on Facebook or Twitter? Nope!

I would go as far as saying that the notch was introduced somewhat on purpose because from a marketing point of view, it really distinguished the device from other smartphones. Just like you knew immediately an iPhone is an iPhone by its home button or how you know immediately if someone is using AirPods by the white tooth brush sticks

The 12 was the ugliest iPhone ever made - 13 looks to continue the trend, with minor upgrades.

I got an 11 pro last year after seeing the 12 lineup - only the mini looked good, because it looks like a 4/5, but the others look like Samsung designed them. Fugly, monstrous, gold band looks like cheap plastic. Was considering the mini but mini battery life is bad, whereas 11 pro battery life is the best of any iPhone....

The 11 pro on the other hand was the best looking iPhone ever, matte gold glass back is the absolute killer, nothing comes close to that.

I got the 512 model and by the looks of it, I'll keep it for a while.

I think five gee - a technology which does not work, but seems to be designed to remote control humans once enough injected themselves with microchips and nanotech, which, they seem more than eager to do any chance they get - is to blame for much of the issues with the 12 design - made everything bigger for zero gain. Shorter battery life - not a gain either.

iPhone 12 is a new design that combines elements of iPhone 5 and iPhone X. Granted, it's not as all-new as iPhone X was, but there's so much you can do with a device that is essentially all screen.
  • iPhone (1st generation) design (1x): 2007
  • iPhone 3G design (2x): 2008 (3G), 2009 (3GS)
  • iPhone 4 design (2x): 2010 (4), 2011 (4S)
  • iPhone 5 design (3x): 2012 (5), 2013 (5S), 2016 (SE (1st generation))
  • iPhone 6 design (5x): 2014 (6), 2015 (6S), 2016 (7), 2017 (8), 2020 (SE (2nd generation))
  • iPhone X design (3x): 2017 (X), 2018 (XS, XR), 2019 (11)
  • iPhone 12 design (2x), 2020 (12), 2021 (13)

I think iPhone 8 and SE second generation are separate designs because of their all glass backs compared to the iPhone 6 design.

Honestly I don’t understand why so much animadversion against an eventual flip/foldable iPhone. And yes, I know that current flip smartphones manufactured by companies other than Apple lacks from enough quality, but come on! we should understand that a flip/foldable iPhone would have all the quality and refinement that only Apple can achieve, and as most of previous models it would be a masterly executed iPhone, so why not give it a chance?

From my personal point of view, it would be like having your 5.8 candy bar size iPhone or even bigger (much bigger even) but in a smaller package that would fit better in our pockets, purse or wherever we carry it. Actually a flip/foldable phone is the only way we can have a +6.5 screen phone in a practical size and not looking ridiculous (the trend is that people will be wanting larger screens day by day). And also from my personal POV there’s no much use in fight this idea that anyway is the logical step forward in the evolution of smartphones. If you don’t agree with me with this very last statement, then tell me, how do you imagine the smartphones of the medium future?

What a TIRED design. Holy

Apple is turning into IBM pumping the same designs every year that they know will say, they do not care about any functionality or aesthetics. Remember how Jobs made the first iMac, then the lamp iMac, then near current design. The first iPod which became mini and nano. Apple's design are lingering longer than car designs now. Mac mini, Apple TV, and MBP remain to look mostly same for near 10 + years now. The very different from the coloured iBooks, white ibooks, titanium PowerBooks....they are turning into an IBM ThinkPad.

Its nice they came with something different this year with the coloured iMacs.

LOL at the people saying the notch is Apple's new trademark signature design that says you have an iPhone and not an Android with a hole punch.

Ha ha, you can't be serious with that iSheep BS.

The notch when it first came out in 2017 was ugly but now in 2021 it just looks Ridiculous and like apples not even trying.

The only feature I would think people worldwide would probably love to have is a new form of Touch ID, just to alleviate some hassles during the pandemic.

A smaller or non-existent notch I can accept as part of the next cycle, but I for one really missed Touch ID when I was wearing masks.
