Says u/Dredd67 as they type away on their phone, ignoring the wife and kids to instead interact with his internet friends.
:p I'm at work taking a well-deserved break. But you're right, the wife and kids deserve better than my face glued to my phone.

Awesome novel. Thanks. Will save that for tonight in bed.
Do I sense some irony from someone advocating for people with the attention span of a goldfish? :)

He looks like a clown. No one will ever look anything other than completely ridiculous wearing any kind of VR/AR headset. You simply can’t cheat human nature, and anyone who thinks it’ll ever become normal is either kidding themselves outright or needs to wait a couple million years. Not caring is another matter entirely 👍

I think you missed their point. "Better than Apple" referred to the technical and business acumen that many on this forum feign to have. But rant on!
Not at all. What do I care about Apple’s technical and business acumen? There are tons of very smart people working at Apple, I’m sure they’ll manage the AVP just fine. I’m here, as you are here, to express opinions about a product. Saying “oh it’ll flop” is probably not something I’d put money on, but if that’s what a person thinks, so what? Or if it looks dorky. I think all VR headsets looks dorky, it’s this giant thing hanging off your face and Apple’s Sparial Computing Wonder Goggles are no different. You may feel differently. That’s great. But “because Apple” will never be an excuse to be excited about anything to me.

Sure, not exactly the same thing, but I still remember kind of the same thing being said back in the pre iPhone days, when people started using headsets to talk to people instead of holding the phone up to their ear. “Haha, look how silly that person looks, talking straight out into nothing, like a crazy person!”.

Yeah. And those Bluetooth headsets still look ridiculous today 👍

Tim Cook has been finally photographed wearing the Apple Vision Pro headset for a Vanity Fair interview, which leads on the digital cover of the magazine.

This is the first time the Apple CEO has been seen wearing the device since its unveiling at WWDC 2023 in June. Given that Cook is usually quick to adopt Apple devices for public consumption, particularly for keynote events and speeches, it's interesting that the company appears to have been a little more reticent to take the same approach with Vision Pro, until now.

The interview includes quotes from Tim Cook, Greg Joswiak, James Cameron, Jon Favreau, and others on their experience with Apple Vision Pro, how the headset was developed, and more. Here are some select quotes from the interview, conducted by Nick Bilton:
You can read the full review on the Vanity Fair website.

Apple Vision Pro starts at $3,499 and launches in the U.S. this Friday, February 2. Apple has said the Vision Pro will launch in additional countries later this year.

This will mainly be used for porn and they know it.

What normal? Is it normal to walk around with a metal brick in one's hand while ignoring the world around ourselves? Is it normal to carry said brick around in our pocket at all times? Is it normal to put a screen + keyboard on ones lap? It it normal to carry a screen + keyboard and another screen (tablet) and a third screen (phone)... all capable of running almost all of the same apps?

If the answer to any of those is YES, WHY is it "normal"? At one point in time nobody carried any of that. Perhaps it was abnormally weird to imagine anyone doing any of that then? In other words, give Vpro some time- like the rest of the mix- and while it will never be what I presume is your definition of "normal", it will likely find its spots for good productive/enjoyable use... just like the other products.

I lean positive on this product but I have no concept that a "normal" would be any form of 24/7 or 16/7. In fact, my own expectations is that this lives in the bag the majority of time for just about ANY Vpro owner... much like laptops. I doubt it will ever be OUT and as visible (normal?) as smart phones. On the other hand, except for when I'm working in the same space with others, I can imagine that just about every time I pull out the laptop to get things done, I might opt to use the Vpro super-sized screen instead of the laptop screen.

At home or office where I have traditional setups and/or big screen TVs, I imagine it will be in the bag almost 100% of the time- just like a laptop. However, as soon as I'm away from the places where the traditional is anchored, this offers the ability to have a super-sized screen on demand. Yes, we already have a super-sized TV at home for our social watching with family & friends. However, we can't balance that TV on the tray table when we're flying.

As opportunities present themselves to enjoy a super-sized screen in a sensible way, I'll enjoy it. When it makes more sense to lean on iDevice or laptop screen- such as when needing to share a screen with others- I'll NOT be using it. When it's time to be social, I'm very likely using NO screen devices at any time... which is as easy as choosing NOT to be using them. Unlike what some seem to perceive, this one is not glued or otherwise permanently affixed to anyone's face... just like a laptop is not permanently attached to anyone's lap. When it makes sense to put it (or the laptop) away, user puts it away. It obviously slips off as easily as folding a laptop closed... and then either going into a bag.

As mentioned in the article the discomfort and annoyance of wearing a physical mask on the face will limit the use of the device. It is why I almost never listen to music on headphones. One might be able to endure it for a short while but for many hours, every day? Not as currently configured, if ever.

Another issue is the apparent unreality of the visual/audio experience. It has been demonstrated that people don't like listening to music in an anechoic chamber because there are no clues from reflections off physical objects in the real world in which we evolved. I wonder if this vision device feels like the combination of an anechoic chamber and a sensory deprivation tank? Tim does refer to it as a kind of super meditation experience. Of course he touts it as a positve one but I am not so sure it is at least over extended use. It may wow people initially but for how long?

What normal?

Normal as in someone’s face looking like a face rather than a blacked-out scuba mask with creepy computer eyes peering out.

Not passing judgement on anyone choosing to use one, but it’s undeniably weird looking and always will be. Like I said, whether or not the user cares is up to them 👍

ETA. For what it’s worth I think it’s a marvellous technical achievement but that is a different matter.

The office looks real nice! I like it. And it Looks like Tim Apple is using a standard Studio Display. Would be interesting to know if he is using maxed out Macbook pro, or the base configuration :)

People wear all shapes & styles of glasses/sunglasses. There was a time in history where wearing a beanie hat with a propeller on it was popular. There was another time in history where coonskin hats was massively popular. Cowboy hats are still very popular in some places. Baseball hats. Nascar racers. Skiers & Divers wear all kinds of Vpro-like goggles when doing their thing. Some divers cover their entire head. Bicyclists wear these thick helmets on their heads when doing their thing. Motorcycle owners (should) wear helmets that cover their entire head & faces. Surgeons & Dentists wear upwards of several layers of masks while doing their thing... with "eyes" (creepy or not) peering out.

In a little over a week, hundreds of millions will gather around their TVs- and some will pay more than $9K per ticket- to watch a bunch of guys in football helmets with these extruding handles across the front bash each other over and over for a couple of hours. Not only will they be wearing a full-head covering helmet, but some will also be wearing face shields, have colorful mouthguards and some will paint their faces too. We'll cheer them, we pay them millions to do it, then we'll interview some of them after with messy, sweaty hair in some kind of hero-like worship.

That is all abnormal by this opinion and yet, millions of such people do it every day. Why? Because wearing that stuff fits their wants/needs or their situation at the time. They have something to do or enjoy and opt to pile up some stuff on their heads and/or faces to do or enjoy their activity.

Again, this thing is not permanently affixed to anyone's head. When they want to return to not looking "undeniably weird" they can remove Vpro... just like someone can take off their glasses, bicycle helmet, motorcycle helmet, dental shield, etc. In my wildest imagination, I picture few Borg roaming around 16/7 in VR goggles. Why? Apparently the best Apple can sell in all of 2024 is up to about 400K units. Apparently, Meta and others have sold many millions of similar products over the last many years. How many social gatherings have you been to where some/many are obscured by Oculus, Sony, XReal, etc? Why is that going to be different if Apple succeeds in selling all they can make?
