High-End iPhone 7 Plus With Dual Cameras Could Be Called 'iPhone Pro'

Today Apple announced the iPad Pro wood Pencil and Pencil Cozy Pro for $39.95

Apple's product lines are way less complicating than their naming-scheme this decade suggests.

It's almost as if they are naming the products like so to emphasize that.

Apple is in the business of generating shareholder value, not streamlining branding just for the sake of streamlining branding.

What what they've got, it'd be hard to streamline branding and not generate shareholder value...

Pro, the way it's being used, is simply one of the many marketing terms Apple uses. It's not an indication of professional use case. Think of all the companies out there that have the word pro in the name of their products.

Which is just absurd. Yes a Macbook Pro is a better config than a Macbook so therefore warrants a Pro title, but what are they going to do with iPhone? Halt the progress of the 'regular' phone so that they have something fancy to call a Pro model?? That would be beyond lame

(same with the iPad pro - the bigger screen is more suited to more heavy and primary use than a small screen)

The rumored high-end iPhone 7 Plus with dual cameras could be named the "iPhone Pro," according to questionable information shared by Chinese website MyDrivers [Google Translate]. Apple is reportedly considering the name to distinguish the device from the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, said to include standard single-lens cameras.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously suggested Apple is working on two versions of the iPhone 7 Plus, one with a single-lens camera and one with a dual-lens camera, to be sold alongside an iPhone 7 with a single-lens camera. That rumor itself sounds questionable as it would splinter Apple's iPhone lineup, but Kuo firmly believes that is Apple's plan and has mentioned it in two separate research notes.

In recent months, MyDrivers has shared several details on the iPhone 7 and the iPhone SE, but as neither device has launched, the site's accuracy is still in question. Apple has used the same general number-based naming scheme for its lineup of flagship iPhones since the iPhone 3G launched in 2008, so the information provided by MyDrivers should be viewed with some skepticism until confirmed by a source with a solid track record.

It's possible rumors of an iPhone Pro are surfacing due to the unique name Apple's 4-inch iPhone is expected to adopt -- iPhone SE -- and the rumored naming plan for the next-generation 9.7-inch iPad. The device will reportedly be branded as an iPad Pro rather than an iPad Air 3, naturally leading to speculation that Apple could make the same shift in its iPhone lineup.

The iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus are not expected to debut until the fall of 2016, but multiple details about the devices have already leaked. In addition to an iPhone 7 Plus version with dual cameras, both devices are rumored to include a water resistant body, no headphone jack, and a design that does away with the rear antenna bands and protruding camera.

This is why...(basing on all the rumors that I've read) I don't take apple seriously. I take "satire" more seriously than this. Hey Apple, this is what your friend's Samsung says about your company (designed in America):

Is the problem using the word "pro" ? As is "professional" ?

Or is the problem using any suffix?

If the word "pro" bothers you.... how about "elite" ? :)

If it's any suffix... I dont know what to tell you. Apple clearly wants to diversify their product lineup. And they need to have some way of naming them.

Apple can't sell one iPhone anymore. The "one size fits all" approach can't work anymore.

They've already moved into 3 different screen sizes... and now it appears that they are also adding additional models with better cameras.

Would it be nice if ALL iPhone models had the same exact features? Sure! But that rarely happens in Apple's product lineups.

People want an external GPU in the 13" Macbook Pro... but that feature is only available in the 15" model.

Is Apple just being stubborn and forcing people to pay more the 15" models? Or can they not cram in an external GPU in the smaller 13" case?

Same for cameras. Could they even put a dual-lens camera system in a 4.7" phone? Or a 4" phone?

So what should they do... not offer a dual-lens camera system at all?

I tend to think that looking at previous sales figures, 4.7" always outsold 5.5" by a large margin. If apple puts some upgrade, e.g. better DAC into a iPhone "Pro" - I'll totally buy it - but then again, it messes with the marketing position of the 4.7" inch mainstream handset - which cannot "seem" to be inferior in major way.

Apple is in the business of generating shareholder value, not streamlining branding just for the sake of streamlining branding.

Yes, but Apple isn't streamlining models they are broadening, and unnecessarily so. As the other poster mentioned this is something SJ really abhorred b/c is just leading to consumer confusion would leads to lost sales b/c consumers don't like to make decisions. SJ was the epitome of K.I.S.S. TC needs to go back to the video tape where SJ spoke about this. Feels like we are going back in time here when there were a billion and one Mac Performa models.

Apple must be pulling some marketing talent over from the car division. One can only imagine what that whiteboard looks like for those nameplates.

It's for "professional" money spender.

Only thing is what does that make ordinary 7 users? Unprofessional? Surely not. o_O

I tend to think they'll reserve the Pro with iPad and MBP until when the chipsets are truly fast enough to power a computer. (A9x is pretty close but no cigar).

There probably isn't enough space in a 4.7" model.

Bigger devices have for more space which allow for more advanced stuff, stuff a 4.7" will never get. That's the reality and you better get used to it. :)
The iPad Air 3 is rumored to be the iPad Pro, with Smart Connector, four speakers and Apple Pencil support. That's everything the Pro has in a smaller package. I know, still a rumor, but with chipset shrinks and efficiency improvements I don't see why they couldn't at some point. Just have the main difference be clock speed.

My thinking is that if Apple is removing the headphone jack and has a more efficient chipset, then there will probably be room for a dual camera system. It just doesn't make sense to spend so much developing the best smartphone camera ever and then limit it to the smaller phablet market. It might not be possible in the first year or two but it will eventually span the entire lineup. I'm hoping they don't make it much thinner and instead stick the extra camera in the iPhone 7, but we'll see what happens. They should just make the iPhone Pro a little thicker than the regular iPhone and pack it full of goodies like 3 or 4GB of RAM, Apple Pencil support (think like a little Moleskine pad), longer battery life and waterproofing. I don't even need 3 or 4GB of RAM but I'll definitely pay for those extra features in addition to the extra RAM. But I won't pay extra if it means I have to carry around a phablet.

One last thing: The iPhone 7 might not even get this dual-camera system at all. It might have other upgrades and Apple could wait until the ultra-efficient A11 chip comes out and put it in both models. It will be interesting to see what happens. Apple is under pressure to continue growing profits and the iPhone Pro is one way to do it. There are a lot of enthusiasts such as myself, along with a lot of showoff type people who would pay more for it—especially if it came in exclusive colors.

The "Pro" name seems to be tossed around like salad these days. Give me a "Pro" phone that has an OLED display, four speakers like the iPad Pro, 4GB RAM, 256GB+ storage, the ability to automate my taxes, and can switch to OSX and perhaps it'll be worthy of the name ;)

The whole moniker is a waste of time anyway, since pretty much any device used by a professional is "pro" device. I've seen professionals using iPhone 5Cs as their work phone.

It's really just an arrogant view that if you and your device aren't editing 4K video in Premiere and editing a 1000 wedding photos in Lightroom/Photoshop then its simply not professional.

I kind of like the postruding camera, I hope it stays. And if it will be called iPhone Pro it has to support Apple pencil. And then the circle is completed.

Kuo has never really been reliable, but 4 different iPhone models? There's no chance.
Actually since last year I had a very strong feeling that Apple was planning on releasing a third variation of iPhone 7 which I dubbed the iPhone 7 Mega lol! Now here we are contiplatingvtgd existence of an iPhone Pro.

I have a 635 CD in the basement vault if you want to take her for a spin. ;)

I dislike the "Pro" terminology and I don't think it's fitting for a phone. Don't get me wrong, I hate "Plus" even more.

Ever since Apple started splitting its phone lineup, I've thought they should use car model lingo. After all, there always seems to be the comparisons of iPhones to cars when it comes to engineering, design, etc. "iPhone SE" sounds like such a naming convention. They need to do away with the numbered models and just have iPhone (normal), iPhone SE (cheap), and perhaps iPhone XL (Plus). If not XL, then something that sounds premium, usually consisting of the letters E, K, L, M, S, or X.

Kuo is not perfect, but he is the number-one most reliable person in the world when it comes to Apple-related rumors.
Mark Gurman wants a word...

Kuo has been right a lot of times, but conversely he's also been wrong a few times.

Any further and the products haven't yet been released. (Although I think he did correctly predict gold aluminium Apple Watches and 7000 Series Aluminium iPhone 6s).

He does get a lot correct, more than most, but many of the misses are on new features or products as opposed to updates or release dates of existing ones.

He did predict a more premium iPhone 6 Plus with a Sapphire display, but that never materialised so it remains to be seen if this 7 Pro will.
