They could do the iPad as follows:

"The iPad is available in the following configurations:

7.9 inch / 9.7 inch / 12.9 inch.

With the following capacities:

32gb / 64gb / 128gb

And these colours:

Space Grey / Gold / Silver"

Simple formula. Describe the product, offer three different configurations based on screen size and then allow the customer to choose their storage capacity and colour.

Easy for the customer to understand but allows for a wider range of models.

They could but they chose not to for better or worse.

Yes but this design is still barely different. Have they really reached a saturation in iPhone designs? I'm already bored of this one, they need to create something new. Although I get there's only so many ways you can make a rectangle, one argument that came up repeatedly with the Apple vs Samsung case a few years ago.

I'm worried this is the wrong time to launch the Pro with consumers getting used to the sting of paying full price for phones. Or maybe that's just for those of us that pay full price instead of financing.
I suspect very few people are paying full price up front. I don't think it took long for people to figure out the "mobile" game, and are now currently financing with no contract (which is funny, because technically you DO still have a 2 year contract—it's just that it's only for the phone now), and getting a new phone every year.

Much like leasing a car, the "dealer" isn't going to tell you the price of the car—only the monthly payments. So while the price of a "Pro" iPhone might be an extra $100 and seem outrageous when compared to the next step down; it'll be easy to sell for only 50¢ more per month or whatever.

You didn't HAVE to pay the full price then... and you don't HAVE to pay the full price now. That's why I'm a little confused whenever people mention the iPhone's retail price in relation to the end of contracts and subsidies.

We get it... iPhones are expensive. But the carriers have always made them obtainable:

Old price tags:
$199
$99
$0

New price tags:
$35/month
$31/month
$27/month

Nothing has really changed though. They are different payment methods on the surface... but they achieve the same goal in the end: you get to walk out of the store with a brand new iPhone without forking over massive amounts of cash up-front. Instead... you pay over time.

And you still have the option to pay the full price if you wanted to... just as you always have. That hasn't changed either.

Now... if you're a person who chooses to pay full price... or you're in a country that doesn't offer payment plans... I can understand why the full retail price might be prohibitive.

But that doesn't mean Apple shouldn't offer it.

The current iPhone 6S Plus 128GB is already approaching $1000

I thought fragmentation was an Android-exclusive feature,
do you consider the presence of a dual camera lens as fragmentation ? o_O

Damn I thought I had an iPhone 6 pro there for a sec. Now its two lenses that make a pro machine...times have changed.

Means the price will go up again.

Sadly its becoming less and less affordable outside the US, with the Strong US dollar. I think this will hurt the sales of the 7.
Apple should reconsider their outside US price policy ....

"Pro" is all about fit: Pro-fit.

Pro-fit? I don't understand. Do all "pros" have large hands? C'mon "pro" is mostly about rationalizing a high price tag without features to justify it.

Usually truly "pro" tools are understood to be that level by reputation. Nikon D4, for example, not Nikon D4 Pro.

Coming from an IP6 here.

If there is no substantial change to form factor and screen and processing power there is no way I am upgrading.

One iPhone Pro Mini please.
Can I have a apple iPhone pro mini compact 7s Plus 64g please. .. how simple can it get.
[doublepost=1456839746][/doublepost]You
If they call it a Pro, it better be "Pro" worthy.
You mean unlike the ipad Pro.. with its phone OS
[doublepost=1456840298][/doublepost]
THE IPHONE IS ALREADY A DEVICE FOR PROFESSIONALS WHY WOULD THEY CALL IT THAT
Explain how? It's an app launcher OS, can you upload files to an FTP Site? And the email.attatchment situation is a farce, so let's not get carried away here..

I'm sure Apple Store employees are going to love explaining to very confused customers that there's an iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 7 Pro, a "new" iPhone 5se, and that they still carry the 6s.

This reminds me of a time in Apple's history.

A current buzzword was "Notebook" computer, and Apple's was the newly created "PowerBook". It was one of, if not the very best of them all. I know I had the PowerBook 170 and it was terrific. Small, light, nicely designed and durable.

After years of great success and an Iconic model name, Apple got stupid and dropped the PowerBook name. Replacing it with the much more cumbersome "MacBook Pro" which at the time caused lots of unhappy customers.

Yet Apple continues the tradition of odd naming practices. Just goes to show they only care about the money.

Apple should reconsider their outside US price policy ....

I consider various screen sizes, various features available/not available in different devices fragmentation. How about you?

This actually sounds like a good marketing move. Making the device names consistent across the board, and they're trying to capture that aspiring photographer market. This makes total sense if they're putting some awesome camera specs in it.

I hope so. Cause its hitting laptop pricing, and a premium laptop that is.

I can see a third offering with 2 lenses and top spec almost hitting 900 pounds.... thats too much. Especially as todays phones have the CPU and GPU power to last quite a few years, and its gimmicks that are the main selling points and not performance anymore.

I miss the days where it was the following choices.

Iphone
Ipad Wifi/3G

Same units with the only option being Storage choices.

Its getting silly today. iPads have fragmented into screen sizes, resolutions, stylus support, same size screens with varrying thinines .... Just go back to the ONE unit, its like apple has copied the rest of the industry and tried to build a better device in each segment.....yes they are better....but its lost the vision about what the product was, chasing $$$$$

Aspiring photographers are so much better off getting a base SLR and a few kit lenses. No phone can beat that, as hard as marketing try to make you believe, the laws of physics still stand.

Great for the average user, but anyone who wants to go into photography......get the right tools for the job.

I disagree - because we're not talking about a camera being pro or not. We're talking about the whole device. The iPhone. And a phone isn't for pro users or amateur users. It's a phone.

It would be cool to have a iPhone "Pro" but when it adds another $100 to the price tag I'm out. Personally I'm tapped out on phones they just keep driving the prices higher and higher, I'm done.

I agree, SLRs are superior. That won't keep them from trying to capture that market. There's a trove of aspiring photographers who do nothing but take pictures and post to social media. That's who they'd be going after. If all your doing is editing and posting, it's an ideal convenience. Millennials would buy that.

Not just price - but the more fragmented iPhone's SKUs become, the more customer confusion/annoyance will kick in. As someone before said - it was nice when the only choice you had to make was memory size. They are turning a relative easy and quick decision into a long and more "thoughtful" time-taking decision with sacrifices to be considered.

Then why does the Plus have a better camera, and why do they charge a premium for it?

Are they charging for the camera or the extra size iPhone?

Id be interested how many people went the PLUS just for the camera, and how many wanted a larger iPhone and the better camera was just a bonus.

Different size screen/resolution. OIS is the only "perk" for the plus. Otherwise it's the same camera. You think people are paying a premium for OIS vs the larger screen?
