Unless Apple starts the iPhone line at 32GB making the 64GB/128GB and 128GB/256GB 7 Plus the Pro models. That would be smart since there'd be more incentive to upgrade when a lot of users can get by with 32GB.
That's not how Apple thinks.

As I was re-reading this article...this iphone 7 plus pro is dual lens whereas iphone 7 and 7plus is SINGLE?!!
Apple..you're telling me to go buy Samsung s7 edge.....

Apple is telling me to go to Samsung s7 edge..

You're gonna switch platforms because of a NAME?

;)

I'm worried this is the wrong time to launch the Pro with consumers getting used to the sting of paying full price for phones. Or maybe that's just for those of us that pay full price instead of financing.

I, for one, am looking forward to owning my iPhone Pro alongside my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro, plus my Pro Pro and my Pro Pro Mini 4 SE....Pro.

A pro phone? What the heck is that? Is it a phone for people who talk on the phone professionally? Is it a phone for phone sex operators? For phone solicitors? For people who cold call you trying to sell stuff? Who are the pro phone users?

The rumor certainly sounds plausible but the name of the new phone is the least of my concerns. The top of my list is whether or not it will have that rumored dual camera :) Personally I really don't care about the headphone jack, I use bluetooth head phones anyway.

lol. I'm not switching because of a name. I MIGHT switch depending how much it cost and what it offers. I wouldn't want to buy a phone if it cost 1,200 usd. That would be senseless. I'm not a "professional" spender.

Clearly "PRO" iPhone will be for artist that want to draw on the go!

Kuo is not perfect, but he is the number-one most reliable person in the world when it comes to Apple-related rumors.

Kuo definitely has some reliable sources. Apple at the moment seems to be in full experiment mode, trying a lot of tricks we haven't seen before (at least not from Apple).

Just in time for no more subsidies.

Contracts and subsidies are gone... but payment plans took their place.

You didn't have to pay full price then... and you don't have to pay full price now. So don't worry now that "subsidies" have vanished.

Besides... I never understood why the word "subsidy" was tied to that practice anyway.

You might only pay $199 for a new iPhone... but did you ever wonder where the other $450 came from? It certainly wasn't a gift from the carrier... and Apple didn't suddenly slash prices by 70% either.

YOU were paying for the phone the entire time. A portion of your monthly bill... $18.75 to be exact... was covering the remaining cost of the phone that you walked out of the store with. That doesn't sound like a subsidy to me.

Two things sadden me:

1. the attitude of "ZOMG I'll never be able to afford an iPhone since subsidies are gone!"
2. that people never understood what was really going on with these supposed subsidies

But don't worry... you won't have to fork over $950 for the iPhone 7 Plus Pro.

You can simply pay for it... a little each month... just like you always have.

When it comes to the many responsibilities a CEO has I must say Tim Cook is doing a stand up job at managing operations, finances, CSR, expansions, outreach, and virtually everything else... except one major area. PRODUCT! Apple used to have a simplified product offering. And they bragged about it. In fact they made fun of their competitors for being overly complex and confusing. Now they are doing exactly they thing they made fun of. Trying to fill every niche in the market with something rather than simply making the best damn device for the best value.

I like Tim Cook, As a COO. or even CEO if someone else would come in and take a stronger position on the product line, because this thing is getting stale and bloated like a dead horse.

The fundamental problem with Tim Cook is he's a bean counter. A very talented one, yes, but a bean counter nonetheless. He is interested in profit and maximising shareholder return, not in building the best products possible to delight users.

I imagine he was extremely adept at solving the logistical headaches associated with launching Apple's classic products but he is not a product guy and I honestly don't think he really, truly, believes a lot of what he says about Apple's "DNA". He parrots some of Steve Jobs rhetoric, but you get the impression it is not what he is really about.

Couple that to a leadership team full of (mostly) middle-aged men who are worth millions of dollars and who in all likelihood have done their best work already and you have a recipe for stagnation and decline.

What Apple needs is a leadership team of people who are hungry, totally product focussed, obsessive about user experience and prepared to take risks to achieve it.

Tim Cook is NOT a risk taker. He is a corporate guy and it is really starting to show.

Sad.

Counterpoint: one size cannot fit all... especially when they are selling over 200 million units a year.

What you call "filling every niche" is actually a major requirement in today's mobile market. Apple has LOTS of customers with different needs. They are a mainstream player now which is something they never had to be back in the old days. I admired the "Steve Jobs Quadrant" but the mobile market is much more diverse.

Starting with the iPhone 6 series... Apple offered two new screen sizes. And with the iPhone SE... they will, once again, be selling a modern 4" phone.

But all those things had to happen, right? People demanded it! I can't see any way around that.

If those are a given... why would one additional model with a fancier camera such a problem? Oh the horror... there might be three new iPhone 7 models announced in September instead of two! (all the various colors and capacity options aren't a factor here... those are product attributes.... not separate products)

So there will be new 4.7" and 5.5" iPhones launched in September... and possibly a 5.5" with dual cameras. Those three models are what will dominate media headlines this Fall. (the iPhone SE will be six months old by that point... and the price-reduced previous models will be old news as well)

It might be a lot of choices... but that's a good thing, right? How is that complex or confusing?

Perhaps instead of saying Apple has a "complex" product line... the word might be "complete" :D

Apple likes consistency.

They just added the IPP so I don't think that'll change anytime soon.

They could do the iPad as follows:

"The iPad is available in the following configurations:

7.9 inch / 9.7 inch / 12.9 inch.

With the following capacities:

32gb / 64gb / 128gb

And these colours:

Space Grey / Gold / Silver"

Simple formula. Describe the product, offer three different configurations based on screen size and then allow the customer to choose their storage capacity and colour.

Easy for the customer to understand but allows for a wider range of models.
