Wow aren't you cool. Love that sarcasm. Actually, one reason for going 16:9 is that with the same footprint you *can* have a keypad, which does increase productivity for some. Consider:

You could do pretty much the same thing with a 16/10 18.4" laptop
Mind you, this laptop has a slightly bigger footprint than the MBP 17 so it's not the best comparison. But there is nothing inherently wrong with 16:9, other than your snobbishness. :p
There isn't anything interesting about it compared to 16/10 either, and as I said 16/10 was chosen because it allowed the reading of two pages of document side by side, 16/9 predates 16/10 by a long time so 16/10 wouldn't have arisen and been standardized if they'd wanted 16/9.
16:9 could be the new 16:10.
no.

That's actually my experience, too. I have a MacBook Pro (obviously not the new one) and never put the mouse into the left USB-slot, as the cable would interfere with my mousing around.

I guess you all must buy a wireless mighty mouse....

makes Apple richer....

so....mighty mouse+remote+dvi ....

what else?:p

Sure, but I can see the logic in justifying USB only on the left since the laptop:

a) has a trackpad

b) has bluetooth so you can use a wireless mouse

mighty mouse

I thoroughly agree that the mighty mouse is a colossal jewel of crap! The only thing I like about it is the scroll ball, but those thing stop working after a few weeks. Does anyone know of a mouse that has an equivalent scroll ball that lasts longer? I really love the 360º scrolling.

i have been using the mighty mouse BT for about 1,5 years and so far so good. Idk why everybody complains about everything. You buy it ok, you don't buy still ok. Chill pill :)

Now guys, please take this with a grain of salt and please don't grill me on this, but I have a friend whose "best" friend is really high up at Apple. My friend knows I am a Mac junkie (and he is too) and asked a few questions after a few drinks last night.

Just got a message about that conversation.

ACCORDING to him, NO WORRIES about lack of ports or missing Firewire. According to him there is a new docking station. The MacBook and the Pro and POSSIBLY the next Air will have a way to connect EVERYTHING including BLU RAY and even a 32" or 34" HD Cinema Display.

The big surprises will be "connectivity" but no word if that is the "brick."

I am PRAYING this information is correct. I just cannot wait until Tuesday. For all I know, my friend's friend is really an accountant at Apple and is lying about it all - or MAYBE he's a really informed accountant.

I hope the price ranges allow ALL possibilities.

Is your friend's friend the same Utapwani Maccalabricku that wants me to keep his millions from Bangladesh safe for his sick grand grand uncle Freddie?

Sorry if this comparison has already been posted - I can't get through all 34 pages before I have to get to bed.

Has anyone determined what type of video port is on the new MBP?
I thought it was Mini-DVI because of the shape, but it seems far too small as illustrated in this crude image:
MBPLate2008.jpg

The USB and minijack are pretty accurate despite the different angle, but the video-out port is much smaller than Mini-DVI and doesn't look like any other port I know (Micro-DVI, HDMI, Mini-HDMI, Display Port etc.)

Maybe I'm way off, and it is just Mini-DVI; if not, I hope whatever it is supports dual link.

Maybe Apple will introduce a new standard...called nano-DVI.

They could make it in different colors and even advertise it as nano-chromatic.
:D:D

i whould offer a word to the wise...get extended apple care protection for this new model...anyone having flashbacks to when the g4 bacame the macbook pro?

No. I skipped over those, keeping my TiBook for six years. Did the Rev. A models have more problems than the current models do? Given the current GPU and backlight issues, I'm not convinced that Rev. Z is any better.

so i'm not reading nearly 1000 pages of replies, but is there a consensus on what's up with Firewire in the Macbook?

if they don't include firewire that is absolutely moronic

oke guys this may be a stupid question, but what's so good about firewire? Which hardware uses it?

i watched from the sidelines...this will be my first mac :) it had better be good ive been waiting for nine months...thats a baby...and if its ugly...steve will have one less mindless groupie

I'll spare you the long explanation, but suffice it to say this:

USB should never, ever have been used for hard drives. FireWire is better in every conceivable way for high-volume data transfer.

what are you talking about? If you are a creative artist just get a machine with enough horse power (read mbp). You are not the target market of the macbook. Apple's vision of the macbook is a cheap mac that runs os x decently. It was never geared towards "creative artists".

Sorry but this is complete bs. The macbook has plenty of power to run audio apps well. In fact most modern laptops have more than enough juice to run audio apps well but the biggest concern/potential bottleneck is the FireWire chipset implimentation. Traditionally, Apple has done this very well.... that's why I, as musician, WAS planning on getting a macbook. Now I'm not. Simple as that. The MacBook pro is WAY more computer than I need and a $1000 more expensive.... Paying a $1000 for a fw port is stupid. And what are most artists short on?... Wait for it..... Oh yeah, cash! Apple is making a huge mistake by throwing it's most avid supporters (creative artists) under the bus. I guess they will have to re-do the commercials now...

Mac guy (comes out in his undies):
"hi, I'm a mac"

Pc guy (looks like a rockstar with a band, groupies and all):
"I'm a pc"
"what happened mac? you have no clothes on?

Mac guy:
"oh, I'm the new mac. I've been completely stripped down so now I'm worthless!"
"why are my friends and groupies hanging out with you?"

Pc guy:
"well, I guess it's because they can't use you anymore, with you being so stripped down and all..."

If you can't tell, this thread pretty much just ruined my day... :(

put even simpler...unless you are doing hd vid...from an external hardrive...its pretty much pointless macbooks wont miss this port

Fw Mbp

as for firewire not being part of the MBP why couldn't they use S800T? this allows FW 800 from an ethernet jack.

taken from wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewire)

FireWire S800T (IEEE 1394c-2006)
FireWire is enhanced to share gigabit Category 5e cable

It provides the following improvements

* A new port specification which provides 800 Mbit/s over the same RJ45 connectors with Category 5e cable which is specified in IEEE 802.3 clause 40 (gigabit Ethernet over copper twisted pair)
* An automatic negotiation that allows the same port to connect to either IEEE Std 1394 or IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet) devices.
* Various minor updates to IEEE 1394b

Though the potential for a combined Ethernet and FireWire RJ45 port is intriguing, as of December 2007, there are no products or chipsets which include this capability.

maybe it's a hybrid port where you can stick a usb on the top part and a firewire on the bottom. not at the same time of course.

GAWD look at the symbol next to it!!!!!!!!!!! its a display port !!!!!!!!! why are we still thinking its firewire? its a display port GAWDERMIT
