well the fact is everyone is going to have something they don't like about the new mb and mbp, but you know what, i bet you'll still end up buying one of those products anyways just because it runs osx. i don't think lack of a firewire port will push anyone to buy a windows based laptop.

I'm still wondering what the following thing could be on the "regular macbook"
MB.jpg

it is the same thing i was wondering about. from one of the pics on page 2 you can see like a tape that covers some kind of hole...and that should be the inner side of it. idk it kinda looks like a space for an HDMI out LOL haha hopefully

MBP Late 2008 Video-out - Mini Displayport?

So, an update to my previous image to avoid any confusion about what the images are showing:
MBPLate2008v02.jpg

The mystery port is some kind of video out - not USB-B, not a combination of USB and Firewire, not Mini-DVI, not HDMI or Mini-HDMI, not (full-sized) Displayport ... but it may be connected to this PDF discussed earlier in this thread that includes three mentions of a "mini-displayport" being developed specifically for Apple by the Taiwanese 'Longwell Company' between January and March of this year.

See page 43 (or just search for "mini displayport")

No firewire would be unfortunate. My external HDD enclosure uses FW800,400, and USB. I use it on my iMac now with F800. I would use the enclosure to backup my new MB also when I buy it. I'd rather not use USB, but it looks like I may have no choice. I'm hoping this is wrong.

anyone feeling like apple is turning into micrsoft?...*ducks*

Well while discussing about the FW not being in the Macbook...
Did anyone even thought about the fact that these pictures could be fake, prototypes, or that apple announce something so that everyone will have a FW in the end?

Think about it..
I find it strange that one dude shows some blurry pictures and 1 or 2 days after ANOTHER dude shows some sharper pictures of MB and 15"MBP, (no 17"?)
Like 9to5mac sais: Does everyone in China has MB casings?!!

I think it's a air vent.

I'm a college student. I understand that you guys can easily just give Apple an extra $1000 for a single firewire port. God Bless you. I can't. I would not be buying the new Macbook just because it's a new toy, or to be cool, etc like 99.9% of you. I'm just upset because the computers we work on at school are macs, all the programs are macbased, all my stuff requires firewire. My Hard drives, my audio interface, my mackie mixer, my camcorders, etc, etc.

I'm upset because I'm basically screwed. I'm not gonna give Apple a couple extra $1000 for a single port. Even if it means I fall behind school or whatever. I was excited about the Macbook because it was going to have a graphics card, cheaper, faster, everything I needed/wanted it seemed... Some things are too good to be true. I'll get over it and have a PC and try to do my best in class. I'm just pissed because now I have to do twice the work and go from P.C to Mac all because Apple couldn't include 1 firewire port. Apple will probably make some cheaply made firewire converter for $500 that gives off noise and makes your audio sound like crap.

I know I'm probably in the 1% that are upset about no firewire port. Apple is marketing towards adult kids that just want a new toy. I understand, they want money. Doesn't mean I can't be disappointed.

Apple has a history of including helpful adapters for free. In the early 90's, all of the machines came with microphones. Then it was video adapters and remote controls. They later scrapped the remotes, but the video adapters still come for free--and as far as I know, those adapters are not sub-par or noisy or whatever it is you're worried about. So don't get all disappointed before you even know the reality of the situation.

Not likely in my case. At this point, Apple's portable line is dead to me.

Seeing as the new line shouldn't bring anything revolutionary they could also buy one from the current line, either new or refurb.

The pic's getting better and better, that's awesome, keep up the good work :D

this year apple sucked..im not talkin stocks or whatever...im talkin products..plain and simple...

I guess I agree. The 3G's design was a step down from the original, IMO. No updates for the MacBook or Pro designs (until now). Nothing really huge this year, but I can't really think of anything astounding they did last year besides the iPhone...but I guess that's a pretty huge release.

Oh well. I like the new iPods, and the MBPs will be all I need for this year.

Way to come off sounding like a complete dick with that first paragraph...

...secondly, if a FW port and less $$ spent is that important to you, buy a refurbed current model

as long as they are good :) im with you

OK, I've read 1000 posts in a single thread today. And have now decided that it's enough.

If anybody's interested: The poll Ethernet versus FireWire, which one is more important, stands at 79 votes for Ethernet (44%), and exactly 100 votes for FireWire (56%).

After studying the whole of the thread it comes as no surprise really. I very much hope that Apple does the whole Ethernet/Firewire-combined-thingy, at least, otherwise this is really a sad messed up decision.

For anybody who wants to raise the count even higher, here's the link to the poll. I'd be happy if that would help fuelling the FireWire-Must-Live-Movement or summink.

Dunno, I guess it'd be stupid to start a petition on changing a product that hasn't even been announced yet, and maybe it all turns out well, after all.

So, that's it from me now, European Time says: time to sleep. G'nite everyone.

Yes, but where would the fun be? What could we bitch about?
They later scrapped the remotes, but the video adapters still come for free
Actually, it depends, my macbook had a remote but no video adapter, the macbook air comes with video adapters (both vga and dvi) and the remote, I think.

Alternative solution..

First off, I hope that the Macbook will have a Firewire connection via some means (Firewire over Ethernet would be fine).

But, I don't think you'll fall behind in school if you don't have the latest, greatest Mac hardware. But, if you're worried about getting good hardware and having a dedicated Firewire port, I'd look at getting the current MBP (refurbed probably) after the new models come out and prices drop. If you could get a new (current gen) MBP for not much more than the current MB price, you'd have a killer machine that will run anything and everything you need.

But if you want to get a PC and it meets your needs better, then, by all means, get a Windows-based PC and run Vista to your heart's content. Not being smarmy but if that better fits your needs, then get that. :) But if all the stuff you work on is Mac-based, it doesn't sound like a PC will answer your needs, so check out the current MBP when prices drop when the new ones come out.

Of course, all of this is speculation and we'll find out for sure in less than 2 days. No sense in getting your panties in a wad based on speculation. :D

Different keyboards

More mockups haha. First one is with black chicklet keys, the second is with silver chicklet keys . The third is with transparent buttons like the ones on a Wiimote or a PSP. Which one would you get? I personally like black

So the port on the far left with the tape over it - that'll be the Magsafe presumably? Isn't that a pretty strange place to have it? I'm not sure how convenient that would be....

And the hole next to it is the IR, right? Better than the front of the MBP like currently, I suppose.

really nice, but i dont think thats the case

The first pic, the one with a pic of the mbp, looks like a photoshoped fake even though I believe the rest of the pics of the casing are real. The tag line seems just non-creative and bland. Then again, why would a guy post real pics of the casing with a fake mockup thrown in?

Seeing as the new line shouldn't bring anything revolutionary they could also buy one from the current line, either new or refurb.

that's what i was thinking. if firewire is so important, why not buy the current gen mb?

Why didn't I think to tell him that? Seriously, LoveCrusader, you should consider a used or refurbed MBP for what you're doing. That you're even considering the latest and newest thing suggests that you're not as different from everyone here as you might want to believe.

I think this bears repeating. Good time to get a discounted MB or MBP, depending on your needs. I haven't used a laptop with the chiclet keys but for now I'm glad my rev3 MBP has the normal ones. Compatibility may be the breaking point for some users, but bear in mind these new laptops will probably have a decent upgrade in cpu and gpu speed. Depends on your needs. *shrug*

I'm more interested to see if they will give out any more information on Snow Leopard at this release event. The new hardware in these laptops may be better suited to taking advantage of technology developed for 10.6, and I'd like to know if there's ever going to be any reason for me to upgrade from Tiger (perhaps benefits for CS4?). Laptops with anything less than a core2 duo may not see much benefit (and I'm still holding out that my cpu will).
