so i'm not reading nearly 1000 pages of replies, but is there a consensus on what's up with Firewire in the Macbook?

if they don't include firewire that is absolutely moronic

So I'm writing it for n-th time, but whatever.

It seems there's a FW800 (or 1600, or 3200) port on MBP, but not on MB. None of them seem to have FW400. However, both have Ethernet and there's a possibility Apple will use FireWire S800T, which would make it Ethernet/FireWire port.

Gone from the MacBooks, if no Firewire through Ethernet connector is in place. There's a poll if you want to show that Firewire is as important as or more important for you than Ethernet.

The poll of EtherWire versus FireNet extravaganza.

Sorry but this is complete bs. The macbook has plenty of power to run audio apps well. In fact most modern laptops have more than enough juice to run audio apps well but the biggest concern/potential bottleneck is the FireWire chipset implimentation. Traditionally, Apple has done this very well.... that's why I, as musician, WAS planning on getting a macbook. Now I'm not. Simple as that. The MacBook pro is WAY more computer than I need and a $1000 more expensive.... Paying a $1000 for a fw port is stupid. And what are most artists short on?... Wait for it..... Oh yeah, cash! Apple is making a huge mistake by throwing it's most avid supporters (creative artists) under the bus. I guess they will have to re-do the commercials now...

i agree completely with this guy. i don't do video work or play games so I don't need the dedicated video card of the Pro. I did however, plan on using Logic Studio for music production.

i won't make any judgements until tuesday and we actually know for sure, but getting rid of firewire would mean i'm not buying any apple products.

I really can't see them doing this however, do they really think everyone that wants a firewire port is simply going to shell out an additional $1100 for the Pro? that's asinine.

put even simpler...unless you are doing hd vid...from an external hardrive...its pretty much pointless macbooks wont miss this port

I strongly, strongly disagree with you here. USB is an unfunny joke for hard drives. FireWire is much faster, and actually has sufficient bus power to reliably power portable hard disks.

Furthermore:

1. No FireWire means no camcorders. No camcorders means no iMovie.
2. No Target Disk Mode means no easy transfer of old data to new Macs, and it makes life a hell of a lot harder in service departments, most of which use FireWire hard disks to keep "Known-good" disks to boot from to help with diagnosis.

Lastly, you alienate every Mac user who likes having a not-crappy drive that works with every Mac (except for the MacBook Fail, er… Air, which is another unfunny joke).

Is your friend's friend the same Utapwani Maccalabricku that wants me to keep his millions from Bangladesh safe for his sick grand grand uncle Freddie?

Gotta tell ya: i got a friend too who's gardener is the brother in law of a man who's got on a bus tour in china last week and met a chinese prostitute in a KTV, who's best friend is working in a compagny that officially sells toilet paper but in fact built computers, that says the new macbooks will be vibrators as well.
A-mazing nah?
:)
okido guys let's see what we really get on tuesday, even if i gotta admit I kinda like that docking idea :)

Since there is no new data, the only thing we could conclude is that there doesn't seem to be any dedicated FW port on the new macbooks.
oke guys this may be a stupid question, but what's so good about firewire?
Compared to USB? everything.
Which hardware uses it?
Hard drives, dv cameras, probably some cams as well, mac to mac connections, ... and pretty much any modern PC motherboard includes FW400
It's nowhere evident in the leaked MB photos. Leaked MBP photos clearly have it.
and just as clearly leaked MB photos don't.
maybe it's a hybrid port where you can stick a usb on the top part and a firewire on the bottom. not at the same time of course.
No. The shape is due to a reflection, the port really is the same shape as a mini-dvi one, and the icon next to it is apple's "display" icon.
as for firewire not being part of the MBP why couldn't they use S800T? this allows FW 800 from an ethernet jack.
We've already discussed it, they theoretically could but it's not known whether the MCP79 (which is rumored to be used in the new macbooks) can provide it, or if they could have a third-party chip do it.

THE MACBOOK HAS NO FIREWIRE!!!! :) tada will most people care...nope were talking about blond college girls here...i saw one trying to stick a usb drive into the fireport once...they have no idea what fire wire is :D

That's a video out to hook up an external monitor, I have one on my iBook G4.

I also thought it'd be a good idea if they managed to merge USB/FW into one port (13 pin, 4 for USB and 9 for FW1600/3200 - it'd have to change form factor from FW800 though, not to mention other difficulties), but why would they do it since there already is a FW S800T standard? Would be one port less anyway, whether we like it or not.

Anyway, this port is for video output.

Thank you :) i felt like the only one who noticed

is anyone else a little disappointed that we are not seeing the tapered design on the mb and mbp like the mba? that's the only thing i'm disappointed about at this point, but everything else is great.

i actually am i was pretty exited about it...but the corners are curved a little more thats a positive i guess

Anyone?

I'm still wondering what the following thing could be on the "regular macbook"

And since NVIDIA will officially release MCP79 on October 15th, we'll know about MacBooks ports before we know about the chipset's potential.

I think it's time I stopped following this thread. Goodnight everyone :).

Well I'm more interested in the convenience of FW over USB.

* FW still "feels" faster than the equivalent USB when transferring files, so even when you're not doing heavy video or anything it feels much snappier
* FW can provide up to 45W of power to a device. USB? The standard is something like 1W or 2W, with ****** voltage, requiring power bricks for even some 2.5" (laptop) disks
* FW can be chained, that's damn nice. USB requires hubs, and doesn't work that well when a lot of hubs are hubbed
* Finally, even though it's much less noticeable than it used to be, USB transfers still burn through CPU, while FW still consumes absolutely no CPU

In the end, USB is mainly once more illustration of the "worse is better" principle.

I'm not.

I'm a college student. I understand that you guys can easily just give Apple an extra $1000 for a single firewire port. God Bless you. I can't. I would not be buying the new Macbook just because it's a new toy, or to be cool, etc like 99.9% of you. I'm just upset because the computers we work on at school are macs, all the programs are macbased, all my stuff requires firewire. My Hard drives, my audio interface, my mackie mixer, my camcorders, etc, etc.

I'm upset because I'm basically screwed. I'm not gonna give Apple a couple extra $1000 for a single port. Even if it means I fall behind school or whatever. I was excited about the Macbook because it was going to have a graphics card, cheaper, faster, everything I needed/wanted it seemed... Some things are too good to be true. I'll get over it and have a PC and try to do my best in class. I'm just pissed because now I have to do twice the work and go from P.C to Mac all because Apple couldn't include 1 firewire port. Apple will probably make some cheaply made firewire converter for $500 that gives off noise and makes your audio sound like crap.

I know I'm probably in the 1% that are upset about no firewire port. Apple is marketing towards adult kids that just want a new toy. I understand, they want money. Doesn't mean I can't be disappointed.

Yes, I'm quite disappointed too. It would be a step to a more advanced style. Currently the difference between the old MacBook Pro and the new one isn't too big, if you compare the cases. And now I'm reading about a missing FireWire on the MacBook. My excitement wanes a bit.

thanks using facts is so much easier to deal with than "scoff...usb te he...gay"
