Most likely, no. Apple did say that they have no information regarding this subject.

Does anyone know if Macrumors will email us when the keynote video is up? I don't want to sit here refreshing the page.

The new device connectivity allows you to communicate with devices over the dock connector or bluetooth using custom protocols if you so wish.

That leaves open the possibility for a 3rd party to create a dock connector or bluetooth keyboard that works with their application.

Ignore them. Some people have an absurd pathological hatred of Apple and can't stand their success. They believe in the mac-latte stereotype, which stirs feelings of class divisions, which makes them despise Apple. That's why they champion every average phone as an "iPhone killer". It's happened so many times now, it's getting boring.

I guarantee that 3 months after the Pre's released, you won't hear another word about it. Just like the HTC Touch, XPERIA X1, the Blackberry Storm, the T-Mobile G1, the Samsung Instinct...etc. All average phones that were hailed as the saviour of mankind by people who are desperate for the iPhone to lose.

I remember when all those phones were suposed to be "iphone killers". A month after each device was released, they became mere afterthoughts. All Apple has to do is release a new iphone in the summer and people will be saying Pre who.

I still want the unlock screen to show me upcoming calendar events and info like the Treo did. That's always been my biggest pet peeve.

The update looks like a big improvement, but I still suspect I'll prefer the Pre because of how Palm implemented notifications.

I remember a patent for that recently from Apple, I think it will be in the new iphone.

Copy and Paste vs. Search (email/web)

http://www.biocow.com/iCopy

I have a copy and paste java bookmarklet that works good enough for what it is, so the Copy and Paste feature is small potatoes compared to the need for a "word SEARCH" capability. Does anyone else get sick of going through hundreds/thousands of emails trying to find what you're looking for? I sure do. I'd say a SEARCH feature would take a huge priority over Copy and Paste when iCopy works great for what it is.

Just a thought.

Did you just skip over the Spotlight feature?

Has anyone been able to download it yet? I keep getting to the SDK login screen before it stops loading. Probably overloading their server. :p

Is first gen iPod Touch f.cked?
Kinda mad as I got it last August, which is only about 1/2 year ago. And I already feel like this thing is so out of 'touch' to the rest of their products.

My iPhone has been way more functional than any other phone I've owned since the day it was released.

That depends on your previous phone.

Not trying to be a smart @$$, but Treo and WiMo users lost a LOT of functionality with the 2G and 3G iPhone. Some lost functionality and gained an expensive bill.

Even now, Treo and WiMo users still can't go to the iPhone and open and edit and save MS Office documents and even organize their contacts by groups or mass delete emails, etc.

Just saying. :p

I'll be glad for MMS for the 1 to 2 picture messages I get a year, but I'll probably never use it to send.

I don't see why everyone is saying the 1G iPhone is being left behind ... they left out 2 small features... big. deal. It's not like they left out copy/paste!

So, just to clarify...

What's available today to developers is a beta of the SDK. There is not a beta of the SDK and a beta of 3.0 that they can put on their phone, correct?

If there is a beta they can put on the phone, I'm about to make me a developer...

If Jesus Himself came back to earth and turned water to wine, half of MacRumors would say 'meh, this is red. I wanted white.'

LOL! That's a perfect sig for this particular thread.

And if Jesus did change the red wine to white, they'd say "why didn't you just make it white to begin with??"

From the Q&A:

Q: Where do you stand on tethering?
A: There’s two pieces needed to support that: client side and working with carriers. We’re absolutely supporting tethering in the client side in iPhone 3.0, but we’re working with carriers around the world to see when they can add tethering support on their networks. But we are building that support into iPhone 3.0.

Are they seriously telling these lies publicly? Carriers (at least in Europe) support tethering for at least 5 years!!! What exactly is Apple working with the carriers on? What a ********.

exactly my thoughts. I live in Toronto, and Rogers is 100% okay with tethering! I called them and checked numerous times! They are okay with it becuase they dont offer unlimited data (I have 6gb) which is plenty! as long as i dont go over it. Its wierd that they would say that carriers dont support it. I know people who have jailbroken and use tethering and Rogers is Okay with it. They better allow tethering apps in the app store come 3.0!

Has this question been answered yet: if I'm paying the $5 for 200 texts a month, when 3.0 hits, will that include MMS too? or is that extra?

We don't know yet. Instinct tells me that AT&T will charge for MMS, BUT I am hopeful that it will be rolled into the text plan OR just be part of the data plan.

All in all rather impressed with what was offered. I wish that they gave a better timetable then "Summer". Landscape is a huge plus, better games, and cut & paste finally.

The only concern I have is over the addition of being able to purchase product ( ie items, levels, clothing) in the course of a game. I like the custom aspect that it offers, but in the same token 99 cents to purchase a gun that should already be in the core game bothers me.

Addons - cool
Building game 99 cents at a time - booooooo

The MMS hardware limitation is a software one as they are more than capable of sending and receiving MMS. This is false differentiation by apple and an attempt to force you to upgrade.
Meh. I think you're not being accurate either. You're saying that a software solution is technically POSSIBLE, while Apple is saying that there is a hardware limitation that has limited support of their implementation.

So, in your version, Apple designs backwards compatible support in the way they would make Bootcamp work with non-Intel Macs... by basically creating a software abstraction layer to make old hardware synonymous with the new hardware Apple is relying on. I'm sure such a solution is much more than a couple of days work, and would likely represent an ongoing legacy support issue. Honestly, MMS over EDGE-only devices? I'd rather they focused on other things, personally.

June 2007 in ancient history. My wife will likely be starting on an iPhone in June. I'm sorely tempted to simply purchase the new iPhone hardware at that time... let her have my old 3G model (I'll use the newer model), and leave my original 2G (which she currently uses) around the house for visitors and remote control functions (especially given the new infra-red transmitting accessory apps that will undoubtedly arrive).
